importing from EU. Anyone done it lately?

Just doing the final bits of research now and the HMRC site seems to suggest that if a car has been registered in the EU then vat had been paid - which is nice.

However, they're after a few bits and bobs they never used to ask for: a letter from a garage saying the speedo has MPH markings, that the headlights have been sorted for UK roads and that the fog light had been moved to the correct for UK side. All ready enough to sort.

Has anyone brought anything old in from the EU lately? Just wondering how many hoops I'm gonna have to jump through.

It depends how old it is. I think pre 2001 is still pretty easy just have to do the NOVA thing when it comes in then mot it and Bob's your mothers brother

Escort? How's it coming on now, I was thinking about it the other day funnily enough wondering how it was getting on.

I did wonder the same when you said (on FB, I think) that you were driving to Czech.

It lives. Need to rebuild the carb, replace the alternator and put a set of new tyres on it to get it through the TÜV test and then register it on export plates in Germany.

Then take it on its first drive for 22 years only 1000 miles or so, should be easy enough.

I'll be taking pics. They'll be my usual eBay standard jobs but they'll do.

Next questions.

German TUV. How bloody impossible is it?

What's the NOVA stuff all about? Car is from the EU and has been taxed in the past so that should kill the import tax, right?

But you will be fined £5  (per day) for every day over 2 weeks that you fail to notify.

So do it promptly. System may then ask for proof  (ie ferry ticket details) so don't bin them as you get off the boat.

So basically if I get it legal in Germany and drive it over, keep the ferry tickets etc I should be ok - I.e not get fiscally raped by HMRC.

After all, I'll have paid any tax etc to get it legal in Germany and I've owned the thing for five years already!

I'd go online & ask for the paper froms in advance. They explain what HMRC need much better than their online version -and help avoid potential pitfalls.

I could go on at length- HMRC boil my piss on this issue.

A good idea. Have everything ready.

First and foremost, at this time you can't import anything from the EU, since you are in it. If you want to import something, you need to purchase it in a country that isn't a EU member state.

I sure hope it will be possible to import something from the EU in the foreseeable future, but that's a different story altogether.

I also hope that I will see the day, on which it won't be possible to import something from the EU, because it has thankfully been done away with altogether, but that's yet another story.

I just brought a Fiat Argenta. The speedo has no mileage markings but no one told me anything about it. The Argenta has foglights at both side, so, simply just remove the bulb from the left one. Deflectors on the headlight, cos no chance to find British ones for her.. I'm told, this works.

Corsaviour doesn't appreciate (my) political comments - I dared suggest that EU policy aimed at harmony was having a rapid opposite effect. I'm with Junkman. Just wondering how long it'll be before the major political parties do another about turn on the issue.

Surely it's OK to have foglights on BOTH sides - as long as the one on the right works, the presence of an additional one on the left is a bonus.

Speedo markings can, I think, be stickers/replacement faces (eg lockwood type dials) as long as they clearly show MPH.  I don't know if anyone is actually going to check the accuracy of them at any point.
