spurious insurance claim? scam?

The inlaws are away on holiday but the MIL, has just rung up to say she's had a voicemail message from a claim handlers regarding an accident she had on the 4th of march, apparently another party wants to claim against her? Anyway, there was no accident and she hasn't rung the number back. Is it safe to say this is a scam?

She should call her insurers and ask them if they have received anything. Make it clear that she has no recollection of any incident.

Yes, probably another variant of those 'fishing' calls & text messages. They have no specific details about you but hope that you'll call and they'll then see if you have an accident claim they can make money out of. Ignore

By data farming/fishing.   Ignore the call/text.     OR.....  If the number that made it can receive texts, use a smart phone, copy and paste the complete works of Shakespeare and send those.  This has been done!  Bible, Iliad, Proust, Tolstoy etc work just as well.

If I get a message or call like that I google search the senders number. Sometimes you get information about who they are and whether it is a scam.

I think the number and company name don't show up anything on google. I'll have to get more info tonight. Apparently the caller knew her name and gave the name of the other party. Its all bollocks of course, as there never was an accident. I'm just wondering if its a fraudulent insurance claim by the third party.

Just got this message from the MIL, i'm just gonna cut and paste it as I cba retyping it properly..

Apparently I have to ring Chelsea from Premier Claims regarding a claim Jean Shearer has made against me on 4th March. Their number is 0844 472 2517

I'd inform my insurance company and let them handle it, confirming that there's no basis for a claim.

the phone number belongs to endsleigh insurance. calling 0844 numbers can cost up to 5p a minute but endsleigh don't tell you that.

I'd inform my insurance company and let them handle it, confirming Jean Shearer deliberately ran you over in a road rage incident that was recorded on CCTV, the police have been informed and you're phoning from your hospital bed.

FTFY

That should wipe the smirk of Chelsea's face.

The number belongs to  Alison Ryan of TCS Claims and who is a member of The Insurance Institute of Blackburn and Burnley.

No website, but they deal in PPI and "Have you had an accident recently?" stuff.

Pretty low rent people, so ignore.

So has an actual accident happened? Could the inlaws end up in trouble, bad credit, ccj etc?

Posted

Could just be mistaken identity. Might be worth ringing them to find out what sort of car it was,  and where it happened (or relying on your insurance company to do it for her).

The insurance company may have been given the wrong registration, and got your mum's details from the DVLA. It happens quite a lot.

IF this was not a scam, they would contact the police about the failure to report the accident and leaving the scene without giving details.

If it was not a scam, they would send details to your insurance company, who would write to you.

I wouldn't ring that number. Still sounds like casual scammage. Surely your MiL knows whether an accident happened?

She was with the Wife all day, unless the father in law went out in it it didn't move from the drive. I checked the car over today and there's no damage on it.

If it's a genuine claim (albeit with an incorrect car/reg number) then they will ring back.

Scam. If they call back leave Chelsea on hold and place your phone by your laptop and youtube an episode of Jackanory.

Ring it, give false name, see if they just go ahead with it and start talking about the claim..... If so, scammers.

MIL is insured. Let her insurance co. deal with it, they are there for just this sort of thing. It sounds like a fishing trip, but easily sorted by them.

What if the MILs car has been ringed?

My housemates Mum once had the police ring her up as her 205 cj had been in a crash in Hastings 50 miles away when it was actually parked outside. It was a different cj with her plates on. Someone could be smoking around in a similar car with false plates (I expect to see a lot more of this when the tax disc is abolished).

You mean we can soon expect to see lots more dirty leather chammys draped over number plates and MS Paint skilz on Ebay number plate coverage? Excellent.

good point about the ringing. I would be nervous about contacting my own ins co, as they have a nasty habit of treating ANY accident as a claim, and using it as an excuse to put up the premium. I would call the police, and tell them you suspect the cars been cloned. That will scare the shit out of the scammers!
