Investment Shite

Talking to a colleague today about savings etc. and he said he was trying to persuade his wife to let him buy an old '59 Mini to keep stored away as an investment.  I kind of see his point when he reckons even if their values have plateaued that inflation will see it increase in value over many years but I don't think I'd do it that way.

It got me thinking, a few lucky people who happened to have Minis, VW Type 2s and Escort Mk1s stored away when they were worthless have probably made a tidy profit but you couldn't really guess they were going to skyrocket in value.

I'd take one of these if I had the spare cash and somewhere to hide it away.  I reckon values are just starting to go up after hitting rock bottom.

Probably an Si 4x4 in original condition is the most likely suspect.

So, in the absence of a crystal ball, what would you buy cheap now and store away as a get-rich-slowly investment?

Renault 5 GT Turbo, Peugeot 205 GTi are predictable calls but for max returns I would buy a MG ZT V8. Last British bruiser, bound to be worth mega coin in 30 years. If only so the MG car company and cluster bomb manufacturing firm of Shanghai (we own you) can put it on their stand at the 2044 NEC Motor show (where incidentally they are the only car maker present).

I haz been drinking Merlot lolz1!1!1!1!1

Will be fucked tomorrow morning.......

id go with any of the hot hatches from the late eighties,

fiesta mk1 and mk2......pug 205 gti......golf gti, that kind of thing, all are starting to creep up now but can still be had cheap enough for a profit in a couple of years when the boy racers of that era that couldnt afford them at the time now have spare cash in their pockets

205 GTi

Cavalier GSi

Mk3 Cavalier pre-facelift 1.4 saloon (oddly enough I have one that's for sale)

Nova SR/GTE/GSi

and a curveball: a Corsa GSi and Sport. yeah yeah, modern shit and all that, but they're getting thin on the ground even now.

All of the above. To maximise return smear in dung and straw and lob in a barn. Then find it.

I'm keeping a Set of 8 spoke Nova GSI 14 inch alloys in my shed as an investment.  Well, I can't be arsed to sell them as nobody wants 14 inch alloys, but ONE day, there'll be worth a feck load of money, just like the 4 off 10 inch mini cooper reverse rim wheels I sold in 1989 for £20, and regretted ever since.

I can't remember who but some wit said "The best way to make a small fortune out of cars is start with a large fortune."

Works for me every time!

Bloke at work had a nice 406 Coupe which he got  offered £400 for in a deal at a Mazda stealership.   Told him to rent a lock up, get a carcoon and keep car.   He didn't but I am beginning to wish I had got it off  him.   I reckon that's the way to go.....tidy Coupe versions of family saloons.  I know Rover 800 coupes are worthless but they shouldn't be.   And one day the four or five left will be sought after.    The 80s stuff will have extra  appeal because they will remain useable and fixable and I am pretty sure  their time is still to come.

Predictable, but any sporty Ford. Not just RS' but ST Mondeos and Focuses, a mate who frequents RS and old Ford shows reckons there's already people polishing and chroming Mondeo ST 220s and the like. Anything that has an enthusiastic following when it's 10 years old will invariably become valuable at 20 or 30.

a mate of mine had a Tickford Turbo Capri new in 1984. Shocking really cos shes no car freak. When she chppoed it in for an XR3i three or four years later even the dealers said she should have put it away in a garage somewhere.

This is sort of unrelated, but something I know about as I've had so many - you can't get a decent Astra GTE for under 2k now, and a decent GSi goes for around the 1,500 mark. I didn't buy a GSi for £300 three years ago because of lack of space. Escort RS2000's are the same. If you can resist the temptation of modifying a 'sporty' edition of a hatchback and keep it totally OEM?

The current VXR Vauxhalls will be worth buying at rock bottom and keeping as most will likely get killed by boy racers if they haven't already been, the same way the old SRs and GTEs did. When was the last time you saw a Corsa C SRi?

Also oddballs like the VX220, VXR8 and Monaro (ie actual UK-spec ones).

306 cabrio?

Calibras should be a good bet I reckon. Cheap as chips now and you can still get an occasional one giffer owner crop up.

How about the VR golf/corrado?

Posted

I'd agree with Calibras. My £1000 would go on a couple of Sierras, IIRC they have just been approved for historic rallies and they're going to start feeding into the 'old skool ford' scene before too long.

Forgot to add, 'proper' XJ6s and XJSs are likely to shoot up before too long.

Thinking of cars that have hit rock-bottom prices, 80s/90s Volvos and Rover R8s can hardly get any cheaper but I don't think in all honesty they have much chance of becoming tremendously valuable any time soon.

Fast Fords are usually a good bet anyway, along with anything wearing a VW badge,  at least right now.  That said, VW was pretty humdrum and unfashionable at some points in the past, maybe the next big scene tax will be applied to something unremarkable now, Hyundai maybe.

Considering that rarity doesn't always equal value, I can't see anything with a Daewoo badge ever making serious coin even when there's only 4 left but you never know.

Calibra 4x4 is a solid bet.

V6 Cavalier saloon too - I see one of these every day near where that Ascona I posted in the tat thread lives.

We all seem to be thinking along the Vauxhall line but is it just me or are the fords the ones making hte serious money? Will the Luton lags always be the Dagenham dames poorer sister?

Thinking modern Ford:

  • Fiesta Zetec-S Mk5
  • Pre-facelift Mk6 Fiesta Zetec-S and ST (the bug-eyed facelift ones show up a lot more, but their time will come)
  • Fiesta Mk6 Ghia
  • Focus ST170
  • Mk1 Focus 2.0 Zetec 3dr
  • Mondeo ST220 hatch and estate
  • Early Focus STs
  • 3dr Mk2 Focus (not ST, a few exist)
  • SportKa and StreetKa?
  • Ka/Focus/Puma Millenium Edition??
  • Cougar?
  • I have a feeling Mondeo Titanium Xs (and estates) might go the way of Granada Ghias in a few years, but feel free to denounce this.

Renault megane 2003 on preferably the dci version. Just keep it 5 years and you will be sitting on the only one left. Trouble is the electrics would be shot and if you did breathe life back into it the engine would grenade anyway. They are the new 14 in my opinion only no one likes them.

Mk 1 Mazda MX5. I reckon good ones will go the way of MG B's etc. I'd love another!

The car I could have bought in 1984:

ferrari410superamerica4.jpg

Not one like it, this is the very car. It cost half of a new Golf GTI back then.

I could retire now, not rich, but comfortably.

Alas, I bought this instead:

Even if I'd still have it, it wouldn't pay the bills of one year.

Be warned though, I'm very good at picking cars out that are utterly worthless now and in the future, so follow my advice at your peril.

Rover P6, folks.

Currently prices are all over the place, which is a surefire indicator that they will settle at the upper end of the spectrum soon.

Hope so,my standard mk1 should stand me in good stead for years hopefully

Alfa Romeo GTV and spider about 10 years old. Some still availible for under a grand but fewer than a couple of years ago and prices are creeping up.

Both badges have a history of solid if not great classic form and the cars are nice even if they don't appreciate.
