1986 & 1987 Mitsubishi Lancer Auto - Update 4/3/12

When I first saw this Lancer back in the summer at Ratdat's place I was seriously interested in it. Anyways nowt came of it and then I saw MikeD had bought a new Tredia so a quick PM to enquire if he'd sell me the Lancer. Suffice to say we agreed a price and the Lancer was mine :-)

I served my time on these as a spotty 16 year old and i've been after something autoshite that was slushmatic and power steering. This fit the bill prefectly... So as bought

I've just spent the last week ripping the interior out and given it a a thorough clean. Machine polished the paintwork. On the engine front it's had a full service / new cam belt / new tyres all round on the original alloy wheels. I also had the carb sorted as it was running very rich and the auto choke was stuck on. So £30 later and an engine tune and it's spot on - drives as good as they ever did. It's only got 42k on it and the engine is as sweet as a nut.

Only other things i've done is the front end was slightly out of line for 2 reasons it's been jacked up on the front crossmemer at some point and it's crushed it + it's been in a very minor front end bump at some time in the past - just had a grille rail, wing and bumper from what I can tell. So dusted the brain sells off and stripped the front end down, straigtened the crossmember realigned all the front to get some lovely gaps. Found an old Mitsubishi badge fastened to my tool box from all those years ago and put that on along with a nice period autoshite aa badge !!!

Oh and needed to sort a water leak out in the boot - again very easy job

Overall i'm well pleased with it - So big thanks go to MikeD for selling it to me and to Ratdat for getting it ready for me. Cheers lads

The car is spot on underneath and round the arches etc. this should last a fair few years to come ...

So this is as of yesterday....

Looks lovely, that. Always liked Mitsubishis, wouldn't mind a Galant saloon with a/c one day.

wow looks really good that chap, see old tarts do scrub up well :P

Excellent buy. I've often admired this car at Ratdat's; it's in beautiful condition. Quite a rarity now too. 8)

It certainly seems to be in the right hands! Well done for getting it back up to scratch.

I agree, great work in securing it - sounds like it's in the ideal hands.

Really snazzy! I can't remember seeing any Lancer saloons of that era but an elderly couple in the village had an estate with the crazy rear lights.

Superb job :D I'm glad you like it and i'm mega happy it's in caring hands :)

Cheers for the thumbs up guys The Lancer has just had a good long run again and it's settled down lovely. MPG is a lot better now as well after the runs and the tune up ... While it was parked up 2 young kids took a second look and said WOW look at that Lancer (but the 'WOW' was in a dissapointing not an EVO way  )- - it will certainly be in the Anglevan fleet for a long long time. I just need to decide what to do with the Nissan Sunny it's replaced. Thats such a belter I dont want to get rid of that either !!!

Oh dear i've just bought another !!! saw this and couldn't resist it. Full MOT and 26,000 genuine. One family owner (mother until last year then son) WOn for £250 :)

I've just picked it up and it drives ace - will update the pics very soon. Originally bought as spares for my gold one (if it was a bad un) But it's not, it's ace so this will be given the treatment.

So now the Mitsubishi Lancer GLX auto club, Wakefield branch has 2 members and they are both me  Does that make me a serial auto shitter :?:

Looking good!

There's another Lancer in Ossett but it's a RWD one which has been untaxed for a few years. Left a note a few months back, haven't heard owt though. Might bother them later about it.

Well i've had a good nose round the car and to be honest i'm chuffed to bits. As it turns out this is far better than the gold one (bar the corroded front wings)

It drove the 60 miles home like a new un, the owner warned me not to use it on the motorway as it's old !!! ah well I survived.

So heres some extra pics taken today

o/s/r arch

Worst bit - looks like it's had a bit of repair as well as lots of filler or just filling the rot - i remember having to swap wings under warrenty  so should be an easy swap

Posted Image

Another rot spot - just by boot lock - needs a bit of welding

Posted Image

Just needs a clean - no rot

Posted Image

Needs a damn good polish

Posted Image

another problem job - leaky boots and back lamp gobbed up with bathroom sealer (it's not worked  )

Posted Image

Brand new exhaust - full system (bonus)

Posted Image

super mint underneath

Posted Image

sills spot on

Posted Image

Interior is mint bar a bloody good vac and clean

Posted Image

All original stereo and it works -- but it's shite

Super low miles

Posted Image

I was looking through the paperwork and it's always done minimal miles. The service book is stamped every 6 months from reg to 1991 irrespective of miles !! It could do with an o/s/f tyre. 2 new wings (ordered as we speak) If anyone can help sourcing an o/s door mirror and I need a n/s/f door moulding.

I've decided I'm going to keep it and i'm going to fit new wings, weld rear panel up and carry out some minor blow in's where corroded. I'll get it fully waxoyled and undersealed before winter. I'll need to fit a cam belt and carry out a full service at some point. I may end up selling the gold one but i've not decided yet. Cant wait to hit that flat paint with the buffer should come up a treat..

If you can help with the parts or know where I can find some - any help greatly appreciated..

Looks identical to a Proton MPi, interior and most of the bodywork!

Yes the Proton was basically a rebadged Lancer with a regrafted front and rear. This model has been badge engineered as loads of differant versions. But to us in the UK it was Colt for the Hatch and Lancer for the saloon. A lot of the parts from the Proton are interchangeable.

Small update, I went to pick the wings up today but sadly they couldn't find the o/s one which is what i really need. I have had a contact for a good second hand one whichI am keeping my fingers crossed on. If not I've contacted Mitsubishi and you can still buy the wings and not too dear but it can take up to 8 weeks to come as factory order only !!!! i'll keep my fingers crossed that the second hand one is ok... Going to mop it with the Farecla G3 this weekend :)

Very nice work indeed. Good luck with the resto on the white one, trims and mouldings may be hard to find but i hope it looks as good as the gold one when finished :D

Are the wings not availible from hadrian panels?

Just a thought, they laughed in my face when i tried to buy some for my gen2 subaru brat but when i enquired about some for the gen1 they couldnt throw enough of them my way!!

Posted

No joy at Hadrian (although they did supply the N/S one)

When I spoke to Mitsubishi they said that most parts are still available and they are not that expensive.

I think i've sourced a second hand O/S wing just need to arrange a meet up to remove from the car so fingers crossed it's as described and not rotten. If it is rotten then i'll order a genuine one. I've also sourced a mirror and possible a moulding

Thats good news,

Also nice to hear mitsubishi are being helpful sourcing nos parts,

All 3 of the subaru dealers round here are w*****s and extremely rude and unhelpful when i go in to get unobtainable bits for mine, one example being when i asked them if they could get a rear lamp lens for my glf i was told it would be 400quid and would take at least 6 months to arrive....this is all without even looking at a computer screen........

A small update for thee

I spent last weekend valeting the Lancer and have given it a good mop and polish, it took ages to clean all the leaves / moss / mildew / crap from all the orifices !!! It's still not 100% but it's one of those jobs every time you go back to it will only improve.

Sorry for the crappy pics but weather was shite kept raining every time I started working on the sodding thing. When I get the paintwork done i'll get some nice scenic shots..

might be able to see the shine !!

Took all seats out and gave it a good shampoo - came up like new, well chuffed

token boot shot

DSCF9463.jpg

I did a quick oil change on it but it needs a good tune up and i'll strip and clean the brakes to be on the safe side, hope to tax it from 1st of October

I've been busy with my gold one (see page 1) as thats due it's MOT and it needed a new rear exhaust and master cylinder (now just clocked 50k) MOT booked for next week so fingers crossed, luckily the white has a full 12 month ticket so thats sorted.

If anyone can help with a source for parts I need

1x N/S/F door moulding

1x O/S/F door mirror (manual or electric not fussed)

1x O/S/F wing (new or used) I have an early O/S/F wing brand new that I could swap for (for model 1984>1986)

So if anyone can help much appreciated - or knows of one sitting on drive (Colt Hatchback same year is same at the front) in a scrapyard etc. If push comes to shove I'll go to Mitsubishi if my bank balance can manage it !!!!!

Posted

I know where there's a Proton in a scrapyard which is relatively untouched, if that's any good to you? Place is super cheap.
