Once upon a time, I owned this car:

It's a 2.6 CDXI manual. We bought it for a holiday trip to Austria, and sold it shortly after we returned, because the Junkwoman and I detest antediluvian gearboxes. Make no mistake, we can both drive them, we just don't like them.

Allegedly, this is the only one left of its breed.

Vehicle enquiry

The enquiry is complete. The vehicle details for L524 LYG are:

Date of First Registration 02 08 1993
Year of Manufacture 1993
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2594cc
Vehicle Status SORN in place

I would like to see some really rare shite in this thread. What had you?

Posted

Is a 2.6 Carlton really that rare? I wouldn't trust that "how many left" site as far as I could throw it.

I always fancied a Carlton 3.0i 24v Diamond Estate in that Burgundy colour, I drove a 5 speed one once and it was so quick!

The info that it is the last one, comes from the Autobahnstormers.

I'm not saying it is true, and won't argue that for a second. But you will have to agree that it is rare.

I don't know if these are manuals but they are both 2.6 Estates that are still on the road still (well the silver is on a SORN).

I had a Y reg Opel Senator 3.0s. Seriously quick for it's age and cornered flat. Nice car. I also had a Carlton 3.0 CDx 3.0 auto estate. I would imagine they're quite rare now.

I know where there's a Carlton 3.0 GSi on offer if anyone's interested. There's 2.0 litre Carlton Diamond estate for sale over on the blue forum at the moment.

I had an Innocenti de Tomaso (Bertone styled 1275cc italian Mini)

Fiat 131 Mirifiori Sport. Long gone, I actually engine raped it at the end of it's life to shove in an FSO 125p. I am a dick head.

Probably countless others, but that's the one that wakes me up at night in cold sweats.

In my defence I do have 3 Alfa Suds in varying stages of restoration (dilapidation)

Had a Ford AnalProbe V6. Sold it years ago and I still see it driving around!

Had a couple of Shitroen Dollies. Do these count as rare now?

I had a 1964 Tatra 603, pretty rare in this country at least.  I think when I imported it there were about 6 or 7 others.

Then I had a 1992 Tatra 613/4 Mi, it was the only one of its type in the country and I think there were only a couple of hundred ever made.

The 1958 Peerless was one of 250 made, can't be more than 20 left.  Sadly most were cut up in the '70s for their TR3 engine, overdrive gearbox and wire wheels.

I don't know how many Ginetta G26s were made, probably a few hundred?  But in common with the Tatras and Peerless, finding one to buy took about a year of searching.  That's part of the fun I think.

We're all about to be trumped by Mr Bickle, I think :-D

Cherry: during my seven-month ownership last year I literally never saw another one.

post-4559-0-01829300-1395563763_thumb.jpg

Very early Granada, in 2.5V6/manual GXL spec.  I can't see that being a very common configuration even when they were new, but 40 years on?  No wonder I couldn't get rid of the fecker, nobody knew what it was.  Also, very early Metro van, early enough to be badged as a Morris ffs!  1275 engine, low mileage, and no rust.  At all.  Sold both a bit over a year ago for a tiny fraction of their proper value. but they had to go.

There now follows a selection of tat that wasn't very rare at the time but oh boy is it now!  If only I still had them (and you know I don't mean that...)

1981 Daihatsu Charade:

1978 Toyota Cressida estate:

1988 and 86 FSO Polonez!  The 88 in front was my dad's really but I drove it a lot, and then I got one too, from a scrapyard!

1980 Polski Fiat (yes before they changed their name!) 125p estate:

1976 Renault 30 TS V6:

1972 Cortina.  Not that rare even now, is it?  Except it was a 2000GT, ex-Lancashire plod.  Note the number plate, then go and look at your Vanguard one. ;-)

I had an allegro equipe, which is meant to be pretty rare. Also my current Allegro, a 1500 special with manual box is one of two, allegedly.

I owned an austin 3 litre LYG K can't remember the numbers and a 1972 BMW 2500 manual. That was ace and do regret selling that.

I also owned a rare anglia estate fleet model which was owned by WRVS.

My 1986 lancer must be getting rare now.no one else is mad enough to want one !

Straight away anything more than 15 years old is fairly rare. Yesterday at pretty much peak traffic times I did a 125 mile return trip from south Cleveland to North Tyneside, about 50/50 split urban main road and A19 and I watched the traffic both ways as best I could for cars older than the one I was driving. 4 going there, 6 coming home out of hundreds I clocked. My car was a 2000 W reg.

I used to play the same game with previous car but didn't work as was 20 years old. There are no old cars in regular use.

Points for the Victor FB spotted yesterday though?

This probably counts as one of the rarest I've owned. A Mk1 BX estate.

Was thought to be unique during my ownership, but a couple more have been discovered in the UK since, plus one in Malta of all places. It lives on and is still undergoing a rolling restoration. It still looks just as bad, which is brilliant. I still love the dashboard.

The day I sold the BX, I bought this very early Nissan Bluebird. A pretty rare bird this early. Note the similarity in reg number to the BX!

246939_10151180296098200_588450852_n.jpg

Only really early, Japanese-built Bluebirds had this wonderful rear wiper mechanism.

That was believed to be genuine mileage.

I should never have sold this. Alfa Romeo 164 V6 Lusso auto. Not exactly common.

4591_92009308199_4661122_n.jpg

Look at all of those warning lights! (test mode I hasten to point out)

4591_92009413199_4393865_n.jpg

And then there's the Bond Equipe. It was far nicer when on a trailer.

Actually, I seem quite good at owning rare shite. Renault 21 Monaco.

11534_209639578199_6097553_n.jpg

Non-blown, pre-facelift Saab 9000.

215183_10150205993018200_6872599_n.jpg

When did you last see one of these?

272_25370013199_793_n.jpg

Finally, I'm pretty sure my RHD dash-change Renault 5 was rarer than the car in the foreground.

Dunno if this counts, but it was rare when new. Only 22 series 2a TACR1s were made.

Nothing really rare has passed through my hands but the less common included a 1959 Mini with the  rear pocket lights ( I was only 17 when I had it and thought some giffer had added them so we broke the car up for the sake of £10 welding bill).   Also had a 3000XL manual Mk1 Granny estate which was not  too common a spec.   I suppose  I could add my 1964 Honda 50 with lecky start - that always used  to draw comments when I chirped it into life on the button.

I rescued a 1959 Reliant Regal mk4 van (side valve) a few years ago,392 were built and this one became the sole known survivor, none having been seen for 30 years plus.

I did almost the same run on Friday heading to Seahouses leaving 08.00 returning around 15.30.Apart from fat bald men in testosterone A4's and small penis 320d,sitting as close as possible or trying to bully there way north the only thing of interest was a C reg Vauxhall Nova A1 north bound.

I had a 1.3 Lancia Delta once there can't be many of them left in existance. It was totally shagged out mind you.

My 2 dr Mk4 Cortina must be pretty rare.
