Half-arsed collection thread - wildest Essex.

After selling my Grand Voyager to Alan on Sunday, I found myself shiteless. Strange feeling. Well, it wasn't going to last.

So, in the reasonably early hours of this morning, Mrs T and myself found ourselves on the tube, heading towards Liverpool St station.

Signal failure at West Kensington, so severe delays on the District Line.

I didn't take any pics, because if I'd got my camera out in a tube train full with pissed off Londoners on a Monday morning, I'd have probably got a jab on the hooter.

Finally, we found ourselves here:

Purchased two tickets to Audley End, which is near Saffron Walden, Essex.

Then a short cab ride to the seller's address, to be confronted with this:

A 1996/97 Volvo 940 Classic.

After a quick wazz round the bodywork and a listen to the 2.3 lpt engine, monies were exchanged, documents filled in and signed and we were away. We had to stop in a tiny little petrol station in Newport, Essex, which was pretty busy, so sorry, no obligatry filling station shot. Another 15/20 minutes down the road and we found ourselves here:

A latte is just as important on a road trip as petrol.

While I was there, I took these.

A quick blat down a very quiet M11:

The car ran superbly. The legal limit found the car running very quietly and unstressed.

It now sits in my front garden. I'm all shited up again.

Sorry about the lack of photographic content of the journey. The train trip lasted about 45 minutes or so, and was pretty nondescript.

Anyway, have some more pics of the beast at Tetley Towers.

That's lovely, although it's hardly white... ;)

Thanks Eddy.

High mileage, yep 210k, but runs very well.

I'm sure there will be hiccups in the days, weeks, months to come, but for now, Tetley is very happy.

Nice. I like your pictures, very 'eBay'.

I always think large volvos don't suit windy windows. That aside though it looks a very nice motor. What is the mpg of these? A chap across the street has a k plate 940 turbo. He is a old boy and my wife said he had it from nearly new. Not sure if its manual or auto though but it is very clean. Shame to see it sat there.

Posted

If i remember right,my dads 940 had a switch on the dash what looked like a branch. Also think his 740 had same switch too. Anyone know what it was for?

From what I've read, you can get between 25 and 30 mpg out of these, but wouldn't be surprised if it's less.

Perhaps eddyramrod could give us a better idea, he's had his a while now.

I wasn't kind to this one coming down the M11 and round the M25, and I don't think it was too bad.

I can't, I'm afraid, sorry.  I don't bother about mpg, life's too short.  My philosophy has always been: Buy the car you want/need and worry about fuel later.  That said, most of what mine does is four- or five-mile commutes (depending which way I go).  14 of those in a week is half a tank, more or less, say 30-40 notes.  There might be a bit of short-distance round-town work in that too, but rarely any big trips.

I don't bother about mpg either eddy.

It comes from a lifetime of owning vee and straight sixes. This is the first four pot I've had for a fair while.

Goes well enough though.

According to the Volvo forum, if you fit a full pressure turbo on one of these, the bhp ups to 170.

Might be a little job for the future.

Electric aerial I would think. I've a feeling it was for putting the aerial down if you were listening to a tape.

shame i didn't know you were coming this way dave - saffron walden is 10 miles up the road from me and birchanger is my most local kfc

That looks pretty good to be fair, reckon you've done ok there and aren't these famous for doing massive mileages?

Posted

That colour shouldn't suit a boxy Volvo but for some reason it really does.  Looks like a cracking buy, doesn't look it's seen 210k inside or out.

Posted

210k is barely run in for a B230. As for MPG, I've got aCar on my phone for such anality and so far my 940 Classic (2.3 LPT manual) is averaging 23mpg on mostly urban stuff with a current best of 26.5mpg - that said, I am Billywhizz Leadfoot in it - while my Council Estate 740GLE (2.3 n/a auto) is averaging 26, though I have seen 31.6mpg on a decent run.

Nice to have cars with a simple binnicle arrangement - very functional. With the roof-racks you are unstopable and there is no barrier you cannot break.

Yep, electric aerial! C70 has the same, it's the one just to the right of the steering wheel...

One of those things which is inexplicably quite desirable amongst Volvo folk, as certainly later on only the top models had such a thing. By then the estates didn't have separate aerials mind...

That's a heap of pure brilliance you've acquired there!

I always liked the name "classic" when applied on entry level motors. Well bought.

My dad always had estates with the pull up aerial. Maybe a redundant switch

Just read further down and yes the button was the same. My dad had a D plate 740 GLE and a H plate 940SE with the switch. mpg doesn't sound so bad. My dads 240 2.3 GLT,740 and 940 he said where all bad on fuel. The 240 was a 3 speed auto. He had a few carbed 2.1 245 estates years ago too.

I had a butchers at the paperwork I got with the car last night, when Mrs T chucked me off of the pc.

Would you believe it has service history until 202k.

Cambelt change at 189k - comforting.

Thanks for all the positive comments people.

While we're talking about ebay, after the debacle I had trying to sell my first Grand Voyager on there, I will never ever use ebay again for selling a car. Ebay mong hit the 'buy it now' button, I received no communication whatsoever, ebay wouldn't help at all, and was unable to leave a neg against the buyer, yet ebay still took my money. Bloody scandalous.

This Volvo came to me via the Volvo forum.

Hello Mel.

Why didn't I pick up on this post before?????

Oh, I know why. It's because Mrs T slung me off of the pc so she could play Candy Crush Saga and Pearls Peril. You can see Mrs T in the background of a couple of those service area pics. Would you argue with her?

I could've been reunited with the Previa, albeit briefly.

How's the old bus going now, mate?

Re Volvo aerials and their switches: in the 80s and early 90s, when I was living at home, my old man had a succession of 740 estates, which he bought new. I used to go with him when he picked them up, and I remember the salesman showing him that switch. He said it was useful for listening to a cassette in the carwash.

So the estates had electric aerials?? From what i recall i am pretty sure they was just a pull up job. Or they just never worked!

Posted

On mine it's built into the glass of the NSR window.  I always believed that was standard on these later estates.  My blue 740 had a pullup which was broken, I fixed* it with a Scouse aerial (wire coathanger). :)

IIRC dad had a couple of 240 estates and the aerials were fixed on the roof.
