Apparently you cant gas yourself in a modern car because they are too clean. You'd be sitting there for hours wondering why you weren't dead yet.

You have to top yourself in something pre- cat.

Years ago I had to collect a rental MK 3 Escort from a local Police station.  When I got back with it I was told that the renter had gassed herself in it.  We then sent it on a one way hire to Heathrow after a quick wash and vacuum clean.

I had to collect a former colleagues company Astra after he'd gassed himself in it. Certainly an unnerving journey.

I regularly used to drive the truck involved in this accident, the boss just fixed the bent door and they were still using the unit until last year. The vehicle he died in wasn't his usual unit, I had the pleasure of being allocated that particular truck to cover his shift because he was dead. I can honestly say in all the time I drove his wagon I never as much as listened to his tapes or even used one of his pens.

I guess I am too delicate...

I think of selling the Mazda6 I bought 3 month ago because I know of 3 accidents the car was involved in when the former owner had it and I had an accident with it too after 2 1/2 month of ownership. Bad luck? Bad karma?

Reminds me of the time I bought a replacement second hand engine for my first car, from a Scrap Yard in Burscough (Lancs) . Hills Motors. In 1985.

It was a 1300 mk4 spitfire, and they had a low mileage one. They told me to go and have a look and come back and discuss a price.

Given that I was just 18, it was a little shock to see the interior covered in blood, (which I noticed whilst checking the miles out on the dash.

I go back to the office and say "how do I know it works"

Response "Well, it was going when it stopped"

I did buy it and it was a decent engine, but made me think about what might happen.

I had a lancs emergency ambulance for years after it had been retired, slept in it with no problem. Like all fords the rust in the chassis killed it.

Going back to the airfield at Headcorn, on the far right (east?) of the airfield is an orange plane apparently parked half on top of a caravan and another white plane apparently upside down

LINK pan right, follow the semi circular path and then head slightly north.

I would gladly rock around in a old hearse. But i doubt anyone would have actually died in it.

I would love a hearse, but the mrs won't allow :-( it's because the whole thing of death surrounding them, I politely point out that they are just a "taxi" as such to carry the deceased she will have none of it, but she would let me have an ambulance which no doubt people have actually died in

I hit a child with my first Cadillac.   She ran out across the road, through fairly heavy traffic.  I'd seen her and guessed she wasn't going to stop, so I had both feet on the brake pedal (from about 25 mph).  I had a bit more than the length of a Transit* in which to stop...  When I hit her I reckon I was doing 5 mph or less.  I didn't kill her, thankfully; the police turned up, investigated and assured me it wasn't my fault, there was nothing I could do etc, and the girl was recovering in A&E with "minor pelvic injuries."  I fell out of love with the car after that and sold it six months later.  Whenever I check on DVLA it shows up as last liable, 2002... the last disc I put on it.  I don't think I passed on this story to the new owner, so it's unlikely whoever he sold it to could/would know.  I do know I didn't want it any longer.  I suspect I would avoid a car someone had actually died in.

*I can say that confidently because it was a Transit she ran out behind.

You are right, probably smell better than a conventional taxi too! More folk will have died in an ambulance than most vehicles i would have thought.

I ran over a man years ago when i used to work at Kinross car auctions.

I was 18, and one of the drivers. My job was to to take the car, drive it through the auction, and when the hammer fell run it out of the auction hall and round to the secure compound at the back of the outdoor car park.

The rule was you werent to go any higher than second gear because the cars would have all kinds of faults you werent aware of.

Usually i repected this, but on this occasion I was given charge of an immaculate Golf GTI and I couldnt resist giving it a bit of welly.

round the auction it went and when the hammer fell i drove out into the carpark, put the foot down and yahoo'd my way into the compound where there was another staff member guiding the cars into the spaces.

As he ushered me in I realised why this Golf had been put into the auction. cos it had NO BRAKES WHATSOEVER.

Pedal sank straight to the floor and at that point my world seemed to go into slow motion.

I just remember the guy shouting STOOOOOOOOOOOOP as i twatted him head on and he disappeared underneath my front bumper.

Luckily he was OK, just winded by the incident, he got up after a minute, called me a cock and the night went on.

A mate had a Mk 3 escort,

his girlfriend  suffered a bad asthma attack, and she sadly died in the passenger seat.

He kept the car for quite a while afterwards.

Never really liked travelling in it again.

I work in a breakers, and you get the occasional car thats had someone die in it.

Not a nice feeling working on something like that.

Case in point being an eldely neighbour that was involved in a accident on a narrow backroad,

the car got towed to the yard where i work after they had cut the poor bugger out,

he died a day or too later.

Was really glad the insurance company came and took it away.

I remember back in around 93/94 a young lad gassed himself in his XR3i. A few of my friends knew him and I knew of his Dad who was a highly regarded motor trader and paint sprayer in a wee village just outside our town.

Well a month or so after I had to nip down to said traders garage and whats on his forecourt????

Yep the very XR3i his son died in. The bastard even wanted all the money for it (1450 rings a bell. Old Y reg but it was a minter) too.

I left after making a feeble excuse as I have truly never wanted to punch someones lights out before or since like I wanted to that day.

As im writing this I still think I should have give him a slap.

I hope he reads this as our type of cars are his and he could well be a member of this site...............Then again probably not as this is a site for decent peaple

Sorry about the rant but it really got me that.

All rather macabre.

Am aware of a chap who committed suicide in his Jag xjs in my village in surrey many years ago. Was a neighbour of my folks. His widow carried on using the car for years, quoting something like " why waste a perfectly good car on that silly old sod". We all declined getting lifts!

  • 2 months later...

I went to the shop to get some bread for my sandwiches and I was greeted by this outside13192706345_b8d6d7155c.jpg

they are now using it (with the former owners families permission) to warn about the dangers of drink driving.

Lancs Police have a couple of fatals that they drag around, they had a Corsa in Burnley a few weeks back that some young lad killed himself in whilst drunk.

They only go on the register if it's an insurance claim, the authorities are self insured same as bus companys -hire companies / large fleets are also self insured

Basically they don't have to abide by the ABI code of practice regards CAT A or B ing these types of vehicles.

There is nothing in the code to say if they should be dealt as b or a anyway. It's only a guide.

I remember working for a few garages and 3 spring to mind

1) Ford Escort mk5 - pushed off the A1 by a large vehicle and went into a ditch - hardly owt wrong with the car but driver was killed as his head hit the side glass (glass didn't smash) - to look at needed a bumper and a bit of damage underneath. sold on as a CAT C if memory serves me right.

2) BMW M3 - guys were racing it on a coast road (owner of car in passenger seat) Car went off cliff and crashed into sea(recovered next day wrecked from being bashed against the rocks over night) 2 guys in the back didn't get out - driver not insured as such didn't go through insurance. I have pics somewhere but basically it sold for £5,000 and buyer said to me he was only buying it for the tags!

3) had an employee decide life was not good any more for him and ended it in one of our courtesy cars, we sold it at auction after a valet I remember it was an N reg Micra but cant for life of me remember the rest of the reg - RIP Paul

When I worked at LRO magazine I got a letter from the owner of that "Essex boys" RR inviting us to do a feature. It was written in a manner I can only describe as like the script of a "Police Camera Action" style show, pretty much glamourising the whole thing but the weirdest thing of all was he reckoned there were still stains on the car!! I never followed it up for obvious reasons.

I read something about lorries from the Herald of Free Enterprise that had been sold on afterwards, repaired and put back on the road. Quite a big story at the time with the tabloids up in arms about it, especially the wagons whose drivers had died. All sorts of stories about them being haunted - or more likely just monumentally buggered after their dunking in the channel.

Back in the 80's the lorry i drove was swapped for one that had killed a mechanic working underneath it, apparently someone had started it and in those days lorries were instant starters, it was in gear shot off the jacks and that was it for the poor bloke.

They wouldn't have it in the depot after that, understandable, so i, muggins, got it.

There was always something about that lorry, for one thing it would actually cruise at 95 and i don't mean kms per hour either, but it went like no lorry i've driven before or since, i was on nights with it and there was barely a car on the road that could live with it, let alone the Irish lorries who normally passed everything in sight.

edit, my mate had a 2.9 Cortina and he couldn't keep up with the bugger on acceleration tractor unit alone.

Had an incident one night, a spooky bugger too, felt like something unseen got in the cab with me, my skin crawled for several hours then the atmosphere suddenly changed back, i could tell the whole tale of that if anyone's bothered.

Glad to see the back of the thing to be honest.

Not sure i should have told this tale, i once mentioned it on another forum and one of the posters turned out to be the accident investigator for the mechanics death all those years ago, small world.

I read on a truckers' forum that at least two trucks which were on the Herald when it capsized were definitely put back on the road afterwards: a B-reg Scania 142 and a D-reg Iveco Turbotech, the latter having fallen through the open bow doors when the ferry went over.

I'm a weird bugger and love all that stuff. I'd be interested to hear it!

A bloke I used to work with was an hgv fitter and he had a couple of repair jobs in where the tractor had hit a pedestrian and part of the repair job was to clean the bits of body and brain out of the radiator/intercooler before it was fixed and put back on the road.

Re Headcorn airfield, is that a pair of Mig 21's by the gate?

Ok then, the spooky episode for those who asked.

This would be around 1988, used to leave London anytime between 11pm and midnight, having spent at least an hour in the canteen stuffing me face and drinking gallons of tea, only trouble is i've got the worlds smallest bladder, and a cock to match being the last in the queue for that bugger too.

So on this particular night i'm on one of me 3 regular trips, up M1 along M45 and then as soon as reached the A45 at Dunchurch always had to dash in the first layby for a slash, normal routine that was.

Anyway there i am at the side of the lorry, probably about 1am peeing to me hearts content (having eventually found me cock) over the grass verge, when all of a sudden the lights on the lorry all went out, sod me bloody fuse, so anyway i zip up and stagger round to the drivers door, open up and all the lights come back on, bloody odd this, a nearly new MAN and 80's MAN's were like 70's MAN's bloody unbreakable and totally reliable, electrics never played up.

Never mind i jumped in and carried on thinking nothing of it assuming a dodgy switch, however something had changed,  i can hardly describe the atmosphere, it was almost electric, ice cold and felt like someone/thing was there watching me from behind the passenger seat on the bunk, sounds silly now but it was bloody terrifying at the time, i kept swivelling round expecting to see something at any moment lurk out of the dark.

Anyway, carried on, did me several deliveries, its still there and i'm still bloody jittery but then as quickly as it came it ended after about a couple of hours, warmth and normal atmosphere resumed.

Nobody had a problem with that lorry, and i kept quiet about this episode as me mates would only have taken the piss.

Then a few nights later down at the London print the lads were taking the piss out of one of my oppos, i normally followed him on shift anyway but sometimes we covered other shifts so met up.

The lads were teasing him about his 'ghost'.

Intrigued i spoke to him, he expected i was going to take the piss too, but i'm not like that and he sat down and told me.

He'd come to the end of the M45 and just got on the A45, similar late night, anyway what appeared to be a woman crossed (he said floated) the road in front of him at my usual pee stop, he tried to avoid her but couldn't and thought he'd hit her,  he stopped and seached expecting the worst but could find nothing.

Bloody shook him up as much as me when i told him my little tale.

So there we are, i didn't see anything but i'm convinced i wasn't alone, he saw something but found and felt nothing.

Buggered if i know what to make of it, but i do know i never stopped there for a pee again.

I can vouch for that..in 2010 after one of my marathon epileptic seizures in NZ..i caught up with an old local friend..a mad writer tho still quite brilliant..and she'd attempted that in her new car.She said that she just hallucinated really badly and got a headache and said she'd have rather done it in my Viva. She's super fine now..said it was just a good wake up call.
