I knew I shouldn't have been left on my own whilst MrsDSdriver is on a jaunt to the land of Toblerone.

I have just won the green XM estate on ebay. Sight unseen. What could possibly go wrong. I wonder if its got any tax .

Does anyone know if XMs are in the envelope of classic insurance yet otherwise I will have to sorn the Pug.

How old is it? Anything older than M reg or so qualifies with some companies.

Its on a N plate so probably not but I will ring up tomorrow and see what happens.

I have the Cherry with Lancaster insurance.

£87 / year with 1500 miles limit.

Its a 1986 car.

I've had The Volvo on a cla$$ic car policy with FJ  for almost five years. No problems at all :)

My Rover is an R-reg and on a classic policy. But then, above all, its a 'Rover'.

Some insurance companies will accept a car from 15 years old onwards on a classic policy. Shop around and I reckon you may well be in with a chance.

I have just fessed up to Mrs DSdriver on Skype. I thought it went quite well. I didn't tell her that it might be replacing the Pug. I'll see if she finds it a pleasant place to be first.

I think you may have to phone round a few insurance companies and ask if it'll go on a classic policy

Posted

Aye. 1995 (I assume) might be a struggle, but some are ok with ten or 15 years apparently.

Try Peter Best they didn't blink with the taxi or the MGF. They quoted me sub £90 for the MGF.

To be honest I think Rovers qualified for classic insurance from new! Obviously most owners were with SAGA anyway.

are there any classic insurers left who dont require you to have it in a garage, have a modern as well, only do 3 miles a year in it only  in the sun etc etc?

Posted

Er, yes. Seeing as I state all mine are driveway stored and, thanks to being a club member, I get unlimited mileage too. I do have a modern at the moment (in their eyes) but they've been happily insuring my fleet of old crocks for several years without a modern. I use Peter James.

I'm with Classicline for the Alpine. I'm pretty sure they cover vehicles 10 years and older on the classic policy (that was a while back so don't take it as gospel). They always beat whatever quote I come back to them with so they are usually up for a deal as well.

Thanks for all the Classic insurance co names, I'll be on the dog in the morning.

Now... about the tax... DVLA says date of liability aug2013. Does this mean it hasn't been sorned and will they try and sting me for unpaid tax?

Posted

No, make sure the right date is on the V5 when it gets sent off, then SORN it in your name straight away, or tax it.

Posted

I haven't really been paying attention to the new rules and could do without the Divla dragon breathing fire at me so how does it work nowadays? Can I tax it when it isn't registered in my name? And as its going to take a few days for the insurance to get onto the system, can I just rock up at a post office and say I want to pay for a tax disc if I have the MOT and insurance cover note?

Or do I ask the current owner to tax it and add the extra onto the purchase price?

Posted

Yes, you can tax it with just the green slip of the V5 at a Post Office. You can't tax it online until the V5 is in your name. As of yesterday, I think you no longer need proof of insurance but you'll definitely need the MOT.

Posted

Problem solved, I asked the seller if he would tax it before I collect it if I paid the extra and he agreed.

Just the insurance to sort now, not going well on the classic car insurance front, one more company to try tomorrow but it takes twenty minutes to half an hour of them asking questions before they give you a price that is not what you want to hear.

Another option is, because It has been too long since I sold the Volvo which had full no claims, to see if it is cheaper to transfer the Pug policy to the new car because that has full bonus and insure the Pug without discount - may be cheaper that way. We will see.

Posted

Yes... well I think I did, they are on the list but either they said no can do or I skipped past them. Have you got an XM insured with them as a classic?

Posted

No XM , but they will insure my P reg MGF and for low cash money too. They did the cab which was R reg as well. The MGF was offered cover at less than £90 FC (London address as well). Might be worth a try if you haven't already phoned them.

Posted

Insurance got - with LV because they matched the 9 years no claims bonus of the Pug and I was spending more time than I could afford. I will certainly be contacting Bests when the two DS are up for renewal as I was disappointed by the lack of helpfulness at FJ. Have they always been this unhelpful or is it because they have just sold out to Aon?

Posted

Oh yes, I got it the wrong way around in my head. Apparently when Aon bought the business someone at Aon said the acquisition would add "significant complementary skills and resources to Aon's existing personal lines and affinity business".

That went well then.

Yes I put my XM on the Classic Multicar, this year in fact

I like RH classic insurance, basically you send them £100 and they give you a certificate for whatever.

I've never claimed on it, but I don't see why it would be any less likely to pay out than any other, they seem serious enough
