SEAT turned 60

In 1953 the Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo started with the 1400.

Other shite birthdays are the centenary of Morris , 100 years of Aston Martin, and 50 years of the Porsche 911.
There will be some 2014 shite birthday bashes – notably the Ford Mustang will hit 50, and MG reaches the grand old age of 90.

Thought I might share this bit of useless trivia shite.

In my humble and often misguided opinion I think even the moderns have retained some style. I think the vag clones all look better than the Volks badged versions.

My family holiday in 1990 (IIRC) took us to Mallorca. We hired a Seat Marbella when we were there. I was only 12 but absolutely loved it! It had only 55kms on the clock and survived my dad clattering a huge, hidden rock on the inside of a bend. The stupidly fast wiper was annoying as I recall.

Similar Marbella.

My hire in Fuertaventura 1994. Hiring bloke said  "!eez a no a rally car, no, no, no offroad!"

I ignored him of course.

18 year old daughter's got a1.0 Arosa, and it's ace! Ok it's slow but it drives lovely, with a big car refinement about it. I pretend it's nothing to do with VW,because I've got an irrational hatred of them, same when I had an Alhambra years ago-Feliz Cumpleanos !

I'd love one of these - Seat 1200 Sport.

Quite a lote of appreciation for SEAT here. :)

My old T reg SEAT Ibiza 1.4 S, which I owned between 2002 and early 2010:

october09006.jpg

To date, the best car I have owned. Written off in Dec 09.

My sister and BIL owned a W reg Toledo V5 (150 bhp I think) that looked flipping hot in metallic burgandy. Sadly that got written off too. :(

My mate Alan's parents have owned mostly SEATs. Their first was a white E reg Ibiza 1.2, replaced by a blue J reg 1.2 CLX (heavily facelifted version of the former) with a dodgy automatic choke. Then it was replaced by a post 1999 Cordoba, mark 1 Leon, mark 2 06 reg Leon and now a new Ibiza. I hope the local dealers give them a decent discount with their regular custom.

After owning a J reg Escort 1.4, Alan himself bought a pre reg'd W reg Ibiza 1.4 (base model - facelifted version of my one) but he now owns his parent's 06 Leon.

I wonder how long a 1200 Sport would last in the UK climate? Also, I assume the stupid fast wipers the SEATs had was because of the rare, but sudden, torrential downpours they can get in those parts

Well if it's a Fiat 128.. I have have two 128 3Ps and lovely little things they were too.

It is true that they had joke door stays that failed before the car transporter had left Turin (crease in door leading edge).

They also had comedy jacks that happily ground their way into the door as you wound away (gouge in centre of door)

And of course, being a Fiat they allowed water into the doors but not out so they rusted at the bottom (frilly door bottom)

But doors apart they were the dogs.

Don't know anything about Seats mind.

Never seen a SEAT 1200 Sport before. The front end seem to come from one of the 1970s Fiat Safety cars.

It has something of a 'mini FSO Polonez' about it . I like it. :)
