A bit of tlc and will be as good as new. I've never seen one that age before. One of the first?

That's delightful Fred, good score.

I much prefer these to the bull nose ones

would suit an enthusiast to provide tlc to bring back to former glory

God knows how long ago I last saw a Mk1 longy bus like that....Always got a soft spot for Trannies - live not far from Eastleigh where as you know they just pulled  the plug...Glad to see she is safe

That's rare as!! Wonder what it's story is and how it managed to survive relatively untouched?

Posted

AFAIK she was last on the road 3 years ago. Bit worried about the lack of rear headlining. The rest we have on a scrap landliner bought for the kitchen.

That is a very early one too by the looks, good score there Fred :)

yep, january registration so made in 66, the first full year of production.

Awesome. That's near identical to the minibus that nobody wanted to go in* at school. Oxford blue when it was new?

That one would never start in the morning. You'd often hear the thing cranking over and over and over until it finally caught then would sit for five minutes with one of the PE teachers ragging the nuts off it to get it to idle without constantly having to feather the throttle. Gears like a bowl of porridge. I think it finally went to scrap when one of the rear doors fell off on the A38 with it loaded full of kids and stuff. Probably 1994 or so.

Good save. That's what I'd pick if someone said to me "show me what you'd define to be a van".

So......

VERY solid underneath. No welding need at all. Which is just as well, as the cosmetics are terrible!! I am actually considering paint stripper for some bits like the chrome Yes the bumpers and other bits are painted over!!!

I think this is Mk1 no 8....

Fred, that looks horrific inside and out.

Well done :)

The rats nest of wires under the dash look particularly daunting. Hammering a bigger transit over the top is doubtless the way forward. Regarding the headlining - if the hangers are in place is it not just a case of getting some material and then making a template before cutting, most of the 60's and 70's cars were trimmed out in this way. It might not look perfect but doubtless it will look OK.

Top auto-shiting that lass. Carry on miss.

the Mk1 and 2 headlinings are stretched on hoops then tucked under the lip round the internal gutter. The front is tucked under the windscreen rubber and really it should come out to do a proper job. Expensive! unless anybody on here knows somebody REALLY cheap. Yes the dangly wires look nasty, but I dont do lectrickery so not my worry. I shall be messing with the outside.

Oh and me cargos clutch seems to have crapped out on the way home. Arse.

Luvverley! Takes me back:

Seeing that mess of wires with the indicator clicker unit hanging down.

The noise!: Essex V4 thrashing away, axle whining, doors-a-crashing.

The leg push to stop with those unservoed drums and the weight of steering the things,

Superb gearchange which was absolutely direct, you could even hear the synchro working.

My first-ever heart throb; her Granpa ferried us about in his D plate Transit, it was like science fiction compared to my mum's Thames van. I nagged and nagged then mum got a Transit in time for me to get L plates on it. Handy things, Transits, when you are 17!

I think that's a top buy.  I'd have been most upset if I'd spotted it and then found it hadn't been saved, so especially glad to know it's gone to a Shiter.  And even more so, to Fred.  Result all round.

Thank eddy! Really pleased with the lack of rot, not so much with the lack of seats of back of the headlining. I am particularly gutted cos I had the seats from another van, and they got chucked.

oh and this is number 9.

SWB panel

LWB Luton

Ambulance

ice cream van

crewcab beavertail

LWB panel van (under construction)

Landliner camper

ex amby camper

scrapper Landliner

oh that seems to be ten....

dont see why not mate. If they are free I could put em on my forum.

Love the bus, far more style and charm than a modern Transit bus.  What's the plan, fix it and drive it as it is or is it being smartened up for TV work?

Posted

yep pure speculation. The V5 says its a 1.7!! Gawd I hope not......

Posted

Fred are the V4s as bad as the reputation suggests?. Or are they ok as I might buy a camper next year.

Posted

The V4 is OK in a van but I prefer the pinto, and its possible to fit one and keep the flat front. The V4s not good in a luton type CI camper though.

I am tempted to put her in for a test despite looking like a total shed. The brakes are drums all round so I dread inbalance. The last time that happened to a Mk1 we had to chuck the front axle in favour of Mk2 discs.

Posted

Good idea- leastways you'll know the worst. Looks pretty good to me, Fred.

I must sort mine out -but I dread disinterring it. You can count the minutes till an Irishman is meandering up the drive.....

Posted

Nigel I know exactly what you mean. Had the Mk2 pickup out of storage for a few days. Was parked outside and I spotted two cheeky fookers literally circling her. I shot outside and it was the usual is-it-for-sale line and I sent em away. We then spent the next 45 mins swapping stuff around to block her in. She'd only been outside 2 hours FFS!! Worrying....

Attract a certain 'breed' don't they?  I've all sorts of unusual chod scattered about, but little raises that much interest -except from the cognoscenti.

Get the transit out though.....

It needs some welding (-standard footwell stuff) which ill health is stopping me doing.  A good mate offered -but refuses to have it at his gaff overnight, because he's certain they'll try as soon as they know its there.
