Geely Autos: Good Cars Or Chinese Tosh?

Recommended Posts

for those who dont know who Geely is they are a Chinese manufacturer who are planning to start selling their cars here in the UK. as far as im aware their flagship model is the Emgrand EC7. looks solid enough IMO. they are already selling cars in Eastern Europe and are slowly creeping across Weston Europe and will soon enough, be in our hand. what are your thoughts? discuss :)post-17281-0-75632600-1384082438_thumb.jpg

Looks like a Kia trying to be a Merc; as such, I'm out.  However, if they can produce a decently-built product at a saleable price, and back it up with service, I see no reason for the sheep not to buy them in droves.

I hope there good and not tosh, as they own Volvo!

come to think of it, they also own the London taxi company.

I think they'll do just fine. They will be what Korean cars where here ten years ago. Look where they are now.

Looks alright. There were a few concerns over the crash test ratings of the Emgrand. Hopefully this will be sorted out before they go on sale in the UK.

Ncap tested it a year or 2 back now but it was awarded 3 star for adult protection and 5 star for child protection, overall it got 4 star.

So long as they don't do what the Chinese State Washing Machine & Slave Labour company did with the MG6's prices, it might sell

MG6 = Next Talbot Tagora.

I'd give one a go; they're not liable to be any worse than any other horrifically dull modern toss. Same goes for the MG6.

If they price it to undercut the dreadful Skoda Rapid, and do a good diseasel version too, I can see the cab trade buying a fair few as well

Ok so if you had the choice between Proton Preve or this, what would you go for? id have the Proton personally because i think it would be a little bit better in the quality department.

I've never even heard of a Proton Preve to be honest. Not seen a 'new' Proton for a long while either.

I liked the look of the Proton Inspira but sadly it appears we won't see those; never heard of the Preve either.

I doubt the Preve will come to the UK either to be honest. Most Proton dealers have shut. We don't have one now around here. Last 'new' Proton I saw was a 59 plate Gen2 which belonged to a supervisor where I used to work

its already comforted that the preve is coming to the UK along with a hatchback version (suprima) and a MPV. god knows where they will sell them though considering proton dealers have shut.

To me, it just looks like more anonymous road litter no better or worse than anything else in its sector. unless they sell it cheap there is no reason to give it preference over a kia, hyundai etc

Shame we won't get the Inspira as that's the only one they would probably sell with it being a rebadged Lancer. Maybe we will get it when Mitsubishi discontinue the current Lancer as they were at there most popular when they sold rebadged Mitsubishis.

Having had experience with a variety of Chinese motorcycles, all of which looked fine on the surface, I will be giving Geely a wide berth.  Not that I'd be in the market for one in the first place.

I suspect they'll sell in decent numbers to people who just need transport.

Can't see a rep ditching his A4 S-line for one, same as he wouldn't go for an i40 unless his manager gave him no option.

I think a lot of public are a bit wary though, a lot of early cars having poor NCAP ratings, and then the sheer amount of ripped-off designs make it difficult to swallow. A bit like an iPod versus an MP3 player with a touch screen and similar looking icons. Deep down you know they both do the same job, but only one gets put on Christmas lists.

Fairly sure Talbot sold more Tagoras.

Entirely possible there are more Tagoras LEFT than there have been MG6s sold in the UK...

I'm sure there will be a whole busload of Chinese engineers in Gothenburg with notepads and abacus's - Volvo are the best in the business for safety, and Ford were up there with the best for chassis engineering, so I'd imagine they may take something back with them to China..

That's what MG doesn't get; to the UK buyer, they are an unknown quantity, nobody is fooled that MG is the same company as MG Rover and at the moment anything chinese does not have a "quality cache" necessary to sell for mainstream prices.

Dacia, whilst an unknown quantity to most of the UK does have the benefit (and indeed is its major selling point) of being dirt cheap to buy in the first place so buyer's expectations are lower. If they were priced the same as a Corsa or Fiesta them they would not sell, and that's what is happening with the MG6. Priced the same as everything else in its sector with no definable reason to buy one.

I think Geely need to learn from that in order to succeed in this country.

Buyers will be very wary of any Chinese brand to be fair, we have a Great Wall dealer not far from here, and I've yet to see any of their products, even though they only sell 'steak & kidney lock opener' spec pickups, and we have shitloads of camps around here. It's gonna be an uphill struggle for em. Just look how long it took High-and Dry/Kia to get established.

I've yet to see a great wall or mg6 and I spend an awful lot of time on the motorway

I saw a "King Long" coach the other day, it looked like space age shite.

King Longs are cheapo piss poor copies of Eurodesigns, with comedy reliability.
