RAC Rally rolled into the region

The RAC rally headed to our area today stages at Hamsterley Forest then Croft and back to hamsterley

I seem to remember reading that Porsche 911s were so dominant in classic rallying a few years ago they had to be reclassified or summink (although thats probably a 933 is it so probably in  different class anyway)? 

 

 

* edit - Just checked my dates and I was way off. Its probably a 964. I know less about Porsches than normal cars.

After every rally car there was 1-2 4x4 support vehicles filled with spares

It was good watching these cars mixing with everyday road cars

.... as a snotty yoof I got a 'proper woodie' when one of these did the 'full-throttle dance' through Bramham Park (..'73 RAC mebbies??).

You lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky so-and-so - I wanted to got to Hamsterly this afternoon, but chose to go graduate engineer job hunting at the NEC instead - needs must etc..  I might get round to uploading some video from Hamsterly in the dark a couple of years ago, just as compensation.  (Shame I missed videoing the Stratos, I was too excited and didn't press the button on the camera/popped too soon).

My boy is in one of the photos,he was waving at every car, every one  waved beeped or flashed lights to him,One of the MK11's blasted  dixie on the way past.Dad can we come again.A small thing that pleased a 7 year old

This is a local/regional/possibly national? rally - the Roger Albert Clark Rally - not one of the WRC stages (where the "RAC Rally of a bit of South Wales" is confined to within a couple of hundred km of HQ (are are all WRC Rallies nowadays) by the world governing body...

 

The days of the RAC Rally covering England, Scotland & Wales in a 4 day 2000 mile dash are sadly looooong gone (as, arguably, are the days of the WRC as there are so few entrants nowadays, I'd suggest for the same reason ).

Yeah VA, that is exactly how rallying used to be!  I'm old enough to remember!  Even went to Oulton Park in 1980 to see a round of the RAC, with a gf in her car, on her L plates.  She had an Escort....

Sometimes there'd be a Chevette or Sunbeam, but for a long time, the Escorts really did have it all their own way.  It says a lot that if you go on a rally-driving "experience" day, chances are you'll be taken out in (and get to drive) a mk2 Escort.  Go to the right school (no I don't know which, sadly) and it might even be one built in Cyprus by my friend Andreas, with a little help from me!

Hmm.... Opinions [on 'Greatest Rally Footage -EvvAhh!!] would argue the FIAT130/Abarth TC was better.... but banned when they put the navigator in the back [over the axle... ]

I love all kinds of old rally machinery and would wet myself at all of it being used in anger, mostly escorts though because the average life of a mk1/2 escort now is polish then trailer to show bring it back and lock it away until the next show, they should be enjoyed
