Interesting shite collected, intermittent misfire investigations

Right, well, erm. In a fit of pique, I advertised the 106 on gumtree yesterday. Long story short, some bloke has been in touch and said he wants to come for it tomorrow. So fine, I let it go, and that's a sale. But, I'm working on Thursday, and public transport is well out of the question.

So, has anyone, fairly local, got something interesting, and preferably cheap that might tide me over for a short while? Closer to Bolton, the better!

Don't want much, do I?

What do you call cheap, said the resident money sniffer?

I've just bought a 106 on Gumtree off some bloke that didn't really want to sell.

It will be available tomorrow.

Curiously enough in Bolton...

I don't know how much test (I have a nasty feeling it's hardly any) is left on my 306 estate, Chris. It's not very at all interesting but it's very cheap to run.

Cough........bmw t+t blackburn......cough.......£500....

Sorry for not replying sooner, looks like I'm sorted. The BMW, tempting as it was, would have bankrupt me, and I really needed something with a decent chunk of test, ideally, so that was Cav's 306 out.

So, I perused ebay, and will, hopefully, be a Puma owner tomorrow. Off on the train in the morning, so I will try to take pictures and construct a half-arsed collection thread at some point.

Wish me luck.

Has anyone mentioned rear arch rot? And make sure the heater works. In the cold position as well if you don't like being cooked...

Posted

Good luck!

If you need seatbelts, rocker cover, boot floor carpet and bits of trim let me know!

And if the arches don't look rotten then they will be, somewhere under the paint. Excellent choice of snotter though. 1.7 I presume?

Posted

Yep, I'm aware of arch rot, and heater control valve maladies, but, to be quite honest, at the price, I don't really care!! It's cheap enough to have a bit of fun in, then punt on/frag/break after a few months.

Beko, thanks for the offer of bits, I shall bear it in mind, and oh. yes, definitely had to be a 1.7!

Nice one, they're hard not to like. Remember to check the oil, they all burn a bit and if the previous owners not on top of it they can end up running low.

I declined a Puma earlier this year. It was cheap, but by the time I'd sorted out some of its maladies, it wouldn't have been. There are LOADS of them for sale, so bide your time if you can. There are lots changing hands for less than £700.

One of the few 'modern. Fords I like, really snazzy looking and I hear they're great to drive. The Tigra looks an even bigger dogs dinner next to one, too.

Well, off I went to Sheffield this morning, with my little helper in tow.

Started off from here at 0900

And after a couple of hours, arrived here. (That's not me, by the way!)

A short walk later, and we found this

Had a quick look round, paid some cash, and we were off.

Called at the chippy on the way home

And after that, it was an uneventful drive home.

All in all, I'm well pleased with it. The heater blows hot, cold and all the inbetween bits, the rear arches are rust free, although they do look to have been wobbed, albeit very well. It's got full leather, and as an added bonus, aircon. It has a bit of an intermittent misfire, especially if you try to pull away at low revs, but it pulls well and corners brilliantly. The only real downer is that I got it home, and it now looks like Mrs S is going to nick it off me!

That looks decent enough, Chris. What's the thoughts on the misfire, coil pack or something?

I'm thinking either coil pack or a plug or lead breaking down, Billy. I'll have to do a bit of research, but I'm hoping it's nothing too serious. Does look a decent thing, although it does need a good wash and polish, as it's been standing for a few days and has leaf marks all over it.

Posted

Nice. Is this a black edition or something?

I don't think these have got coil packs it's just ht leads.

That's the spit of mine, I had a black. Keep the leather clean, I got £260 for mine, plus 80 for the bonnet, 60 a door abd 100 for the shell on the bridge with the wheels on.

Watch the wheels, the plastic studs corrode and break off and look Shit. Mind the seat bolts too, mine rounded off taking the seats out luckily to sell.

The tailgate should ping up when unlocked, but if the dampers are fucked it won't. Don't change the dampers, leave it as just a small pop, as water ducks in when you open the boot when your careful, let alone when the boot lid flings up, and it does hit the Shit your parked under

Abs is a weak cunt, mine came on, luckily after I'd made the decision to bridge it

Nice purchase. These are still a trendy looking little number (until tin-worm eats out the arches) and as cheap as they'll ever be. Keep it 10 years and you'll reap the benefits of OSF tax.

Been doing a bit of research on this intermittent misfire, and it looks like it could be a lambda sensor. Anyone else got any ideas or experience? Otherwise, it's a cracking little thing. Well chuffed!

Posted

Coil pack are quite fragile I think. Any engine lights/codes? May have a spare coil, no idea if its any good or not as mine ran like shit anyway, dont think it misfired though, although I turned the music up so loud to drown out the fucked exhaust I probably didnt notice.

Has it got the right oil in? Mine nearly killed itself on asda correct spec oil, chucked some mobil in and it quietened down

Posted

Check down inside where the plugs are, these seem to fill with water, turning the plugs brown, sometimes cracking the ceramic. coil packs tend to give a permanent missfire on 2 cyls, and a lambda won't really cause a missfire, and if it was bad enough to do so, it'd ping the engine light on.

Crackin wee cars, great fun an B roads- but that gearknob is FREEZING. Rear axle bushes are a C**t too- banging and rattling and a pain to replace- powerflex type ones are the way to go here.

Posted

I recently saw a KA that'd had the bit the rear axlebushes go into slit with a grinder to get the bushes out then welded back up once they'd been put back in. I doubt that's in the ford procedure manual.

Apparantly it's easier just to take the whole rear axle off so you can press them out.

I'm inclined to believe it may be the lambda because it only happens when warm, and is more of a hesitation type of thing. When it starts missing and hesitating, if you back off the throttle, it will clear., a bit like a carbed engine does if it's on choke when hot. I've done a bit of digging, and apparently, the ECU only reads signals from the lambda sensor at low revs and when warm. If the lambda is faulty, it will send a false reading to the ECU, which makes the ECU overfuel, resulting in symptoms similar to "too much choke".

Going to try disconnecting the lambda to see if it makes any difference. Also thought it might be connected to the fact that the exhaust is blowing to buggery. Euro Car Parts are doing the middle section for a shade over £20 at the moment, so I'll chuck one on for what it is. You never know....

Much.

I take the axle down, set fire to the bushes, go for a smoke, come back then dig the remains out with  hacksaw blade and die grinder. We bought the rather expensive speshal tool, which bent and was more hassle than the torch. Powerflex bushes are in 2 halfs and just pop in with a little KY jelly.
