I'm getting 30ish mpg out of my 1.8 cav bumbling around town B so on a run you would get loads more.

What happened to your Mongdeo?

Mongdeo is still knocking about, Ms_Ba11s drives it to work everyday feeling like a PLAYA but cursing its economy, she spends 30-35 week on an 8-mile commute! Got it booked in for a test on Froday marking its 12-month anniversary in our hands.

Fuck me thats ugly. I am not saying I wouldn't but it would only be at 1.50 am and because it all the fitter ones were already taken.

Let me introduce you to the lyrics of a song written in 1999, featured at the bottom of this page:

10 to 2

Peugeot 406 perhaps? Economical and comfortable so 'they' say. Not sure if good ones can be got cheap though.

A rover 800 coupe would mark you out as a man of distinction in the company car park.

From what I remember of the hatchback when they were new, the 2 litre was relatively speedy and the interior was nice but it wasn't very economical.

An early 1990s VW Passat would see you comfortably clear 40mpg as long as it wasn't the 16V version, the 1.8 8V was a good motor though.  Agreed on a Cavalier as said above, although I think the 8V engines had higher gearing for optimum thrift.

I've just bought a grand's worth of diesel Skoda Octavia which should beat 55mpg, but I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Surely that Cav is worth scrap money, minus bribing someone to pull it out of the trees.

Fond memories of the Mk3 Cav but that seems like a money pit.

Alfas - the 156s are lovely to drive and to look at and the 164 a very interesting car but still pleasant to drive. The trouble is if you buy something as dull as a Nissan Primera after a few weeks you will be so bored with it you will want to change it. The danger is an old Alfa can be a pain and you stand a much better chance of a reliable Nissan.  Me - Alfa every time!

Thing is, the 164 is actually a properly engineered motor - with the possible exception of those heater control flap cogs which are made of cheese. They're pretty robust, the electrics are actually fairly reliable and I'd certainly not hesitate to put another into daily service. Only downside to my V6 auto was that the turning circle was akin to a stretched Hummer. Hopeless. (manuals are apparently better in this regard)

I also had a 164 V6 24v Auto in 2008 and liked it very much but it also suffered from understeer, the 164 2.0TS I have driven felt better. The other problem with the V6 in winter is having to have the windows open to listen to the soundtrack!

In 2009 I bought at auction a 156 TS manual silver red leather because I love the looks of the 156. My surprise was how good it was to drive and while I bought it to look at for a while and sell on, I drove it for 14 months and then had the confidence to sell it to a friend.

As much as I adore old Rovers I am getting the vibe that Mr_Ballbag would like something relatively (lol) stress and free and unlikely to eat into proper-chod fixing time.

Nah, bit quiet right this minute, just come back from holiday and have got 4 cars that all need MOT'ing at once so I have curtailed my search a little!!! I have been scanning the bay a bit though and am amazed how few Mk1 Primeras are still about, they are seriously rare cars now.
