Talk to me about Yugos

There is a '89 Yugo 55 that I think is coming up for sale local to me that has been owned by the same guy since new. I have always loved the look of these for all the wrong reasons.

Does anyone own one or has in the past? What are they like?

Had a 45 a year or two back, and loved it. Its the  same car, smaller engine - F plate from memory. Its been a bit of an A/s bike -but my time with it was fun. Ridiculously plasticy inside, with no 'extras' it went well drove like a happy soul, was quite quick & economical, and depreciation free.

I now have a 313 (Fiat 128 with a strange ass) that is roadworthy ready- just not well enough to MOT.

Would I have another? Yes.

Good luck

She had a Yugo 45 back in 1992.

It was rusty as fuck and only a couple of years old.

I was most impressed when the sunshine roof rusted through and was plated and silicone sealed shut with a pop riveted piece of tin plate.

There is no apostrophe. They possess nothing but charm, corrosion, miserable ergonomics, and irrelevant switchgear. Other than that, the driving "dynamics" are sure to make an impression. Buy one at your peril.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I did have the 'pleasure' to go for a spin in one as a passenger a few years ago and the first thing that struck me like someone pointed out was the cheapness of the plastics, parts such as the door cards were literally disintergrating. The suspension also felt incredibly agricultural and was told the gears were 'intresting'.

This one inparticular is low millage, believe its done around 30k and looks remarkably rust free apart from a few bubbles here and there. I shall report back when I get to give it a closer inspection and hopefully get some pics. Oh and its black on a G plate.

Irealised  my mistake in the title when it was to late, indeed there is no apostrophe in Yugos.

...mistake in the title when it was to late...

It's a while since we've had some Yugo porn on here, I'm looking forward to the pictures. :)

The thing is, they were crap when they were new , they'll be crap now.

But whereas they were crap and unloved and ridiculed, now they are unusual and interesting and still crap.

A tiny bit like a beige Nash Metropolitan.

Thanks changed the title.

I'm afraid I think it will be at least a week until I will be able to get to go and see it again. If anyone has any pics of the Yugos they have owned I would love to see.

Engine wise were they just fiat engines?

Basically the 45/55/65 yugo was a fiat 127 in disguise. Absolute horror of a car back in the day! Would be wonderfully eccentric now though, and dare I say it a bit of a treasure ( from a bloke who has spent thousands on a samba)! A mate owned a 65A back in the day, I think the A stood for American, red thing with a 1300cc ohc fiat engine, with a full body kit and alloys. Went like a train and was equally as quick as my old 1300S fiesta. Horrid handling thing though due to the weird rear suspension. A single leaf spring between both rear wheels, with independant rear wishbones and silly camber. Resulted in terrible oversteer and tankslapping! Ah those were the days!

I've driven all three versions of the Yugo, and actually found them good fun. Slightly more agricultural than their 127 and A112 brethren, but not fundamentally different.

Engineering and quality are what you would expect from a 1960s Italian design, manufactured in 1990s war-torn Yugoslavia - not quite on par with a Lexus ! But as far as proletarian, eastern block cars go, you could do far worse than to buy a Yugo.

If for whatever reason you decide against buying it, do post the seller's details on here... I'm sure one of our resident eastern block fetishists will be happy to give it a home !

My first and 3rd cars were 45as. Or rather F466ycs was a 45a H651jcs was the Tempo as they were called then. Basically a Tempo is a 45a with less equipment on it. I rear wash wipe head restraints on front seats etc. buy the thing. Id get one if i could. Excellent wee motors. Mines never fialed me or even failed to start. Mines would go in the coldest of weather which used to annoy the neighbours when their sensibale Cavaliers Sierras etc failed to go. Traded my forst in against a 1.3 Montego. That wasnt my wised move. Said Montego spent most of the first 3 months of my owership in Blair and Grays garage getting fixed. I had a argument with a FIesta in said Montego and got my second Yugo. Which due to my then wifes pressure i traded that in way to quick for a Favourit. Which was fine just wish i had kept the Yugo longer. I d go for it you canny really loose!

Sorry for the absence of an update, but i'm afraid its bad news. The Yugo in the end was not put up for sale, I will be keeping an eye out for when it eventually does. Sorry for the pointless thread.

In other news I have picked up a new winter runabout which may be autoshite worthy.
