Let's talk about the Citroen C6 - future shite

I remember seeing one of these at a motor show years back, before they first went into production and always thinking how ahead of their time they looked inside and out. Seemed like a real return to form in the big barge department for Citroen. The interior, in particular, seemed so well thought out and a great place to waft along. Over the years I guess othes cars caught up in the design stakes and they never seemed to sell particuarly well. There are only 15 or so for sale on Autotrader at present.

They are probably still a few years away from being in shite territory, but I am putting one of these on my WANT list now, in the hope that I might be able to pick one up for a song in a few years' time.

What are your thoughts? Future shite? Tomorrow's World or Yesterday's Massively Expensive Service Bill?

I've liked them since they came out. The (trivial) issue I had with them was the steering wheel. Whereas the C4 which came out earlier had the fixed centre wheel, the C6 had a normal one. I always wondered why they did that especially as the wheel type from the C4 became standardised in most other Citroens.

I like the C6 too, but I am not brave enough to buy one, because here they are by far not that cheap like in the UK. Modern HDI with FAP, complicated electronics, french... Sounds like a nightmare too me after my Volvo S80-desaster.

I've seen a few of these around wycombe recently, and whilst they look lovely inside and out, and have the funky suspension (don't they?) they scare the shit out of me! I look at the XM as a reliable old dinosoar, which is saying something!

Tempted - Maybe one day for a few hundred...

Good plan, Wat. Here's a thought: we should all get together, buy a C6 and share it around like the RentaArgenta.

Who's in...?

Never been brave enough to buy a French car, a mechanic advised me to never do so years ago. However, I've always admired Citroen for their couldn't give a shit design department that genuinely have always done their own thing. I personally think the C6 looks brilliant.

Give it a few years and this plan could have some traction

Good point. No idea why they 'scrimped' on this feature.

I spent plenty of time beind the wheel of a C5 2.2 dizzler and enjoyed it immensely, compared to the 405 petrol I had owned previously. Can only imagine the C6 would be a joy to drive or indeed, be driven in. Give it a few years and these should be sub-£2k territory and maybe less for one of the lower spec. models.

They are magnificent. Fast gaining a cult following judging by how many you see at Citroen Car Club events. I don't think they're that complicated either - steering and brakes are entirely conventional with an electric pump powering the trick suspension. Means it self-levels even with the engine off. Earlier this year, I jumped out of one into an XM (passenger only sadly) and the XM felt like a right flimsy thing. I agree that the scary bits are just the normal modern car woes of emission-hampered diesels.

Really?

I know that opinions often differ, but it is always fascinating to see to which extend they can differ.

To me this heap looks totally backwardly. Suddenly it's 1955.

Gave me a right old roffler when I first saw it and I realised instantly that it's not going to be a SELLAH.

Yeah, but bear in mind that I probably saw it at the back end of the 90's as a prototype and it took 5-6 years to appear on the UK market. Clearly, time and other events overtook it in the intervening years. As a potential shite-o-barge-bargain though, it definitely has my attention.

Keith's done a good write up over on AROnline: http://www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/other-cars/unsung-heroes-citroen-c6/

I think I saw it - like probably most did - around 2005 or thereabouts and instantly considered it a time machine that takes one back half a century in a millisecond.

However, I won't argue for the same millisecond that it has huge prime shite appeal and it wouldn't be kicked off my driveway, however, only if it landed there for the literal song.

In order to get any money from me for Citroen Futureshite, you'd have to put the C-Metisse into production, though.

However, I just checked quickly over on the bay, where a whopping 9 are available for sale, and can't believe how far out of shite territory they are priced.

No, man, for that kind of dough you can buy a real car. In fact, it would buy you a fleet of superb shite, including the odd Cit with oil-based suspension if you really need one.

Indeed. Which brings about the whole question of how on earth any dealers realistically expect to ever shift overpriced barges that depreciate quicker than you can say 'shite', like the C6, Alfa 166, S80s, 607's etc etc. I have seen some of these cars literally sit on forecourts for months on end with no propect of selling. But that's a whole other thread.

I love the look of them. But then again, I love the look of Rover 75s as well.

Perhaps car manufacturers should run all their designs past me just to make sure that I don't like them.

I'm in.  Especially if we can find a petrol one: the thought of having to rely on an elderly Citroen HDI V6 makes me want to curl up in a corner and suck my thumb.

I was mightily impressed on seeing one of these in a main stealer's showroom circa 2006, I think its a stunning looking car inside and out. as with any big cit from the last 50 years, I also wouldn't touch one until it was cheap enough to scrap once something major went wrong.

shouldn't be long now.

I love these, and really want Citroen to make the DS9. I passed a C6 when wondering around Portsmouth the other day, and just stopped for a while to look at it. They're amazing looking cars.

But there's no way I'd have one as an only car.

As im sure you know i had one, i think i must be the only c6 owner to run one for 10k and not lose any money. The look of it was the best bit. I was disappointed with most other aspects of it tbh and i was constantly scanning for warning lights. I loved it whils i had i but certainly wasnt sad to see it go, i have to admit to feeling more confident thrashing the 166 up and down the road thani ever did the c6.

I had a ride in one once (passenger not driver) and was mightily impressed.  I loved the noise and the pace of the V6 HDI, and I can't see it being much more complex than my 607.

I noticed that the average MPG was about 28mpg or something which is not great though is it?

The same V6 HDI is available in the Jaguar XJD which is an interesting comparison.
