Mr Lobster Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 My 2p worth. As much as I don't want to see the forum heavily moderated I think some moderation is in order. Cavette was right to lock the thread, from the minute it was posted it was only ever going to go one way and was best locked / deleted / not posted right from the start. So whilst I don't want RR style moderation there does need to be moderation to delete obvious trouble / trolls / scammers and not just to authorise new members. It'd be nice if people thought a bit more before they posted and considered whether they were actually posting something of interest or something that could be better added to another thread or whatever. A form of self moderation or whatever. Not sure how a five minute delay on posts being published would work as it could get confusing but +1 on not using 'real' names as its hard work for those of us who don't use facebook... Sigmund Fraud, Angrydicky, dollywobbler and 1 other 4
Partridge Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 5min delay is a good idea, but wouldn't that require a mod to be online 24/7 to see if the post is offensive/shit stirring before deciding whether it can appear to the viewing public. To quote Clarkson, no, no, no, no, no, no a thousand times! That will kill the forum stone dead. Trust me on that. KruJoe 1
Cavcraft Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Right, sod it. With the greatest respect to anyone who might not like it, pretty much that whole thread was a pile of fucking toss. So I locked then deleted it, which probably now makes me a baby murdering, kitten killing, genocidal megalomaniac with fantasies of world wide internet power and I was bullied at school. But I don't give a fuck if the truth be told. Pillock 1
dollywobbler Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 In truth, I'd probably avoid deleting stuff. If there's a mods-only area, can you move 'problem' threads to it? I liked to do that on a forum I managed just so if someone said "that's not what I said" I could easily say "er, yes it is!" It was hardly a pinnacle of great reading though.
Spiny Norman Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 No, fair enough. There are limits, and that had gone way beyond the realms of what any reasonable person would have considered a useful (or savable) thread.
Bobthebeard Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Right, sod it. With the greatest respect to anyone who might not like it, pretty much that whole thread was a pile of fucking toss. So I locked then deleted it, which probably now makes me a baby murdering, kitten killing, genocidal megalomaniac with fantasies of world wide internet power and I was bullied at school. But I don't give a fuck if the truth be told.At least rain and cooler weather is forecast soon. Hopefully the general anger that seems to be enveloping the country will be washed away once everyone cools down? Maybe. Can't come too soon IMHO. My dog has gotten increasingly grumpy and even the goldfish in the pond have been falling out with each other! Plus the lawn has gone brown.... Life is full of stuff that bothers us, even when the sun shines! Banger Kenny 1
Mr_Bo11ox Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 I woud have dumped that thread in a virtual septic tank and left it there
Alexg Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 My idea, a little left-field I will admit, is for all of us to act like reasoned intelligent adults and respect the forum a little more. trigger, M'coli, daveb47 and 8 others 11
hairymel Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 ooh my first ever 'like' button press wonderful sentiment Alex realistically though everyone of us has a less reasoned side and this sort of ruck will rear its ugly head every so often - it's just human nature. at a complete tangent - you have a pm Alex
hauserplenty Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 [irony] Just use yer friggin' loafs when posting threads! [/irony]As for the swearing, well, I don't give a [hoot] either. It ain't broke, so don't fix it. ...Right! And now for a complete change of mood: * Someone bring me an eye patch. I feel loike a blewmin' pirate! Banger Kenny 1
Sean Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I will admit to having the bit between my teeth on 'that' thread and should have left it a bit sooner but once I said I was leaving it I did. Ref the moderation on here, I use quite a large number of forums and its very refreshing to see a forum where swearing is allowed, any random crap can be posted and everyone joins in the banter - that REALLY is a good thing. Far too many forums where the words 'can we get back on topic' 'please refrain from swearing' 'this thread is just silly nonsense so its been locked' Well you get the idea. I stumbled on this forum after 'that' thread was linked on ovalchat and I spent a good while having a look around yesterday. For the most part it's a group of like minded people talking shite and having a laugh. You will always get people who don't get along, there's always someone who has to have the last word, there's always someone who 'knows it all' and there is always going to be people bickering. Put 500 (mostly) men in a room and it will pan out pretty much the same as this forum has. The ONLY moderation I think needed is to delete spam and (in my opinion) I think a curb on derogatory personal insults. Water off a ducks back to me and I'm sure to many others but when two people are having a difference of opinion and then because one of those people is losing he decides to make personal insults ref paedophilia - that's just out of order. Great forum, great people. 'If perfect's what you're searching for then just stay the same' Banger Kenny, chaseracer, Sigmund Fraud and 3 others 6
FredTransit Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 oh sorry sean I though us people were here for you to have some fun with, which went better than anticipated. Didnt realise you were coming back......
Sean Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 oh sorry sean I though us people were here for you to have some fun with, which went better than anticipated. Didnt realise you were coming back......I'm not going anywhere pedro!
Danblez Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I think it was unfair the reaction to the mods intervention personally. And what is the point of the report button if people dont want the mods interfering with any content? The report button implies that if something upsets you to report it, all rather confusing. I felt that should have been locked long before but this seems to be against the self moderted ethos which has worked pretty well for years. If the consensus is that it should be how it used to be before Mkll, apart from account approval and dealing with SPAM, make that clear. I think we left them in a difficult position. I kind of agree with the no more tinkering suggestion above but I think personally that the board is much better in terms of functionaility because of Daves hard work and tinkering. Maybe if there are suggestions for improvment they should be run past the board members for approval first?
Tonka Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Moderation can make or break a forum, I am the sole moderator on one forum and only ever have to deal with new members, everybody is there because they are interested in that particular model, we have a laugh in the right part of the forum, there are authorised traders who can freely advertise their wares and it all works. Another where I do my bit and have full admin powers has previously been shut down and over 2 years worth of posts deleted when the guy who set it up for the Club took offence to a comment on there and pulled the plug which threw the Club into chaos and resulted in lots of midnight oil being burnt to salvage what we could and save face to a paying membership. You obviously need to control the spam element, as for the rest, if somebody is offensive they will get told by the regulars and then ignored and once they get bored they'll just move on elsewhere, if common sense prevails and people respect each other's opinions and interests, things will run smoothly, remember this is the internet, many people use it to live out a life they could never have in the real world as it would soon be found to be 110% bullsh*t . Even though I spend a fair bit of time online my interest is in meeting people and seeing their cars for real, thats what being part of a motoring community is all about not slagging each other off just because one person doesnt like another's choice of vehicle or hobby. There are areas on here to have a moan, share something good and do a bit of ribbing about cars for sale etc which should cover most human emotions and real life situations use them where appropriate and everybody will get on just fine but remember if there is a forum user who's opinion you never agree with either ignore anything they post or take a few moments to consider their point of view, there are far too many people on this planet who think they are always right yet invariably they are nearly always wrong. Unless you are sat opposite somebody and can see their expression as they type away you cannot always tell whether a remark is made in jest or contains real venom, use the appropriate smiley face and let the whole world know you are just having a laugh it makes for a much happier place. Partridge Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 And just to add-the powers that be are doing a great job of keeping on top of spam. M'coli and trigger 2

Very wise words! If we continue along the " I don't agree, ban it route" pretty soon there will be nothing left. Everyone has differing opinions for sure, that is life. Enjoy what is of interest and ignore what isn't. I dislike the Daily Mail intensely for its rabble rousing style, but I don't want it banning or moderating for content. I don't buy it. Simple as that. What would be the fun in an Internet forum if all content was monitored? Who would monitor it, who would monitor them? If you don't like something don't buy/read/use/watch it. If its really massively disliked it will eventually go away. Whatever it is.

Migweb is an example. It became so overly moderated, it went from 600 members on at one time, to 10 new posts in a month. They have banned countless members who were the life and soul of the forum. Also new members scared off the old members. It's barely in use anymore and went from the best forum (circa 2002/2003) I've been on to nearly dead. Bobthebeard 1
HillmanImp Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Fucking YAWN. YAWN. Fuck, its true. They are contagious.
KruJoe Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Don't like it? Don't read it! The Ignore function - I don't use it but some users swear by it for not having to see what 'certain' members have posted. The Report button - why not bin it off Dave? It's too easy to be abused at the moment, and it's not right for AS.It should be for bringing spam to the mods' attention, right? But thanks to their hard work, we see no spam now. Also it's for flagging up bad language, or varied opinions. But those are tolerated here, and self policing seems to work fairly well between us (usually!).I'm conscious of all your hard work and just trying to make life easier for admin. If members feel that something is seriously out of order, they always have the option of composing a PM to a mod, but it would avoid them being snowed under with frivolous 'reports'.HTH. hairymel 1
dollywobbler Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Or just have the Report button, but don't have the reports sent anywhere useful... but don't tell everyone! chaseracer and hairymel 2
Twiggy Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Please lock/delete this thread..................................
Wilko220 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Until you just added that last comment it was nearly off the front page anyway!
Spiny Norman Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Would it be possible to get some kind of resolution from the mod team on this discussion then, rather than have everyone carry on chipping their tuppence worth in all the time?
Mr_Bo11ox Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Would it be possible to get some kind of resolution from the mod team on this discussion then, rather than have everyone carry on chipping their tuppence worth in all the time? give the guy a break will you FFS, he's completely overhauled the forum, what more do you want? Seeming endless adjustments to the format and fannying about. We had absolutley no format at all before, now we've got one all we can talk about is fuggin spelling mistakes, moderators vs no moderators and should or shouldnt we have a report button. MAJOR LEAGUE YAWN. instead of wittering on about the flipping format all they time why not scan in a magazine and post it up or do some spotting or make an actual contribution? maxpower, M'coli and Banger Kenny 3
Spiny Norman Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Bol.. whether you like it or want to get involved or not, it's an issue that has been discussed. If you'd bothered to read what I (and dozens of others) have written on here over the past few days, you'd see that's exactly my point, and why I'm asking for something to be said to put the thing to bed.Dave asked for input a few days ago, and since this thread seems to have run its course apart from the inevitable "Yawn" comments from people like you who are happy enough to criticise others without offering any useful input, I just thought I'd ask. Sorry to trouble you.....
Mr_Bo11ox Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I must admit, i have not bothered to read what you have written over the last few days, i just sort of glanced over it and felt really depressed so gave up.
