Genuine 'garage find' job, it had been my mate's dad's bike but he passed away a couple of years or so ago and this had just sat in his garage. Not been on the road since 1997, hopefully my lad and I can get it up and running again. I'm not keeping it but I do really like it.

That looks well nice Billy :D

A friend in the bike club I was in had one of these for when he wasn't using his ZZR1100.  He was about 6' 8" and built like the proverbial brick building.  It looked like a fizzy with him on.

Ooh, nice one!  The 400/4 is one of my favourite '70s Hondas.  Really sweet little bikes if you get a good 'un.

nice one

my mother had one of these. used to take me to school on it, it sounded lovely at full chat (if you ignored the squeaky front brake)

hers was a dark blue supersport 400/4 on a P reg.

Oops, typo. '97 was last on road.

I saw a bike very similar to this in Bolsover earlier today, red tank and gold decals and wheels, looked pretty smart too.  I'll drag a picture up at some point since I took one but can't remember what I did with it.

I don't "do" bikes but that really is nice! What engine is in it?

Posted

400cc, 4 cylinder. In their day they were quite 'the thing' I seem to remember but I expect most modern 125s would piss all over it now!

nice one billy

we have the 90s version super four  - 52 throbbing hp but does 115 :D

Oooof, very nice.

Im trying to persuade a bloke on the next wing to me to flog me his unused Bandit for what he paid for it (£300)

This is where you tell us you paid £3.50 and a bag of sherbert dib dabs for it isnt it?

Posted

I paid a surprisingly un-mingebag (for me) price for it, M.

Because it was my mate's dad's I'd already offered my opinion on its value as vultures were hovering and one interested party was (in my opinion) taking the piss. He'd agreed to pay the price we'd mooted then just pissed about for months.

Hopefully I can turn a few quid out of it like, and I've just lobbed £50 at a new battery and plugs this morning

Me laddo tested a few things in it and declared two plugs were banjaxed and the battery was toast anyhow.

New battery on charge as I type, then (hopefully later today) a drop of oil down the bores and some gentle thumbing or kicking over. If we can get a spark we'll be happy for now as we're not convinced the HT leads are too clever.

Swilled the tank out a bit, somewhat murky stale fuel but have seen worse so some fresh juice and crossed fingers will follow.

My mate reckons the fuel line is kyboshed though so that's another thing on the list if needed.

My lad's made a load of progress on this today. He's stripped a few bits off, got jiggy with his multi-meter and fitted new battery and plugs. Got home from work, we fiddled about with the points and got some sparks, then started  fault finding. It's so nearly there now but the coil that does cylinders 2 and 3 has declared for a duck. David Silver have a new pattern one in but an old contact in the game reckons he might have one in so ringing them back tomorrow.

Happy that we (he) has got this far but sort of frustrated that we can't do anything until the part has arrived.

Nice one, cheers! A local bike parts place has those in but we baulked at having to make a bracket as they (coils) are slightly longer and it looked like a bit of mucking about. Hopefully a bike breakers not far from here has one, going to ring them mid-morning, failing that David Silver have new pattern parts in.

Nearly there! Got a second hand coil today, just lobbed it on and it now transpires the points are knack'd, least one set of them are. It did very faintly try and fire before though with a tincture of pez down one of the bores, so we must be getting close.

Looks like the carbs will have to come off at some point though, they need a bit of attention it would seem though nothing major.
