Best stuff to paint rusting coil springs with?

The cheap shiz 40mm lowering springs that I bought for my Corsa 2 years ago are going rusty, not surprisingly. The dampers are close behind.

I only bought cheap ones to start me off and the intention is to het better ones eventually.

I want to try and get another few years out of these ones though so want to preserve them as best I can.

Would Hammerite smooth suffice, or would it just flake off like the existing material which looks like its made from eggshells.

Hammerite is crap for pretty much anything. I doubt it'd cope with the flex of a coil spring.

Your best bet is probably a latex or polyurethane-based paint, but even those would probably eventually crack.

I'd also go for Waxoyl or another underseal.

There is nothing you can paint it with, the flexing will have it off within weeks.

I wonder if powder coating will be up to it though - it's quite cheap, you can have four springs done for about 20 quid.

I'll agree with Station on the powder coating. It's flexible (ish) so it'll last longer than paint. It'll still crack up and peel off in the end, but it will last longer.

Black bumper paint? That's designed to flex.

Stonechip?

Stonechip isn't actually waterproof. It's designed to be painted over. I'd go for something oily myself, like oil perhaps.

Just leave them.

What's the point??

If it takes 15 years to rust through 1mm mild steel bodywork you ain't going to loose much springyness if you let 2 years of rust drop off them.

How many second hand cars have you seen with coil springs rusted through??

The chances are you'll bust a nail or damage somthing taking them off.

Go to the pub and have £20 of beer instead!

Gonna go for the copper grease solution, got loads of it in the garage.

Cheers for all the suggestions though, appreciated!

Related* question.

I have a 5l pot of black Waxoyl and a suitably 'aged' rust felting texture evolving under my 57 Savvy.

I believe Waxoyl does it's wonders as a slimey greasey coating - but is liquified by it having a solvent to evaporate after application.

How thin can you usefully make it, for putting through an airless pump sprayer/weedkiller sprayer? And what do you thin it with??

Better when applied warmed up, I know.
