Discovery desires - rot replacement

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend over his very scratched, five year old Discovery.

Me: "Wow, that looks like it's been through a hedge backwards"

Him: "Naah. Forwards."

Ouch!

Those tree slider things on Zippy's Disco don't look too obvious and probably save its skin in the rough.

They have protected the door bottoms and sills from quite a lot of evils over the years, they're only on it cos they came with it. If I had bought them, I would have got the weld on type that effectively replace the entire sills.

Unfortunately they didn't protect me very well this weekend just gone - I'll start a thread on my disco in the next couple of days so I'm not hijacking DW's. Suffice to say my disco is unwell at the moment.

*Cough* should have bought a Lada...

That´s the problem I have with my mint 87 Pajero. It´s completely original, almost perfect paint-finish without scratches or dings and almost rustfree. So every time I intend to go a bit of green-laning in it, I just can´t because I would risk the original paint. So I am only using my offroad-vehicle on the road. :-?

Tricky isn't in Lukas? I refuse to get too precious about it, though most of the lanes around here are quite gentle. A friend wanted to come along, but I said damage was quite likely, so he probably shouldn't. I wasn't wrong!

I think tree/rock sliders are going to happen. The outer sills aren't very healthy anyway, so perhaps now's the time to fit some of the proper, welded ones. Importantly, they give you something to jack directly on to as well. Am now considering a heavy duty front bumper, though all this stuff costs money.

Parts for the disco are about the cheepest you can get try getting modified bits for jap crap, I had to wait for 8 weeks to get the lift kit for mine as it was only available in Aus.

You could make bumper and rocksliders as not hard to do.

'Sideways' would have earned him ULTIMATE SHITE POINTS.

As it happens, my mate is a fabricator. I think this might be game on!

I take it off roading with an underslung LPG tank is a bad idea?

I faced a similar problem with the old Rangie, so I understand where you are coming from, D_W. I started off viewing it as a short-term purchase and a bit of fun until it died or got prohibitively expensive to repair. It was also intended as a bit of a 'battle tank' around London and it fulfilled that role very well. In short, I started off not caring much about it and came very close to rolling it at an ill-advised pay & play site (wasn't trying anything overambitious, but I took my eye off the ball for a second and nearly paid the price for it). I got away with some light damage but it put me off doing anything like that ever again, although 'gentle' greenlaning does appeal and I want to get up to Landcraft at Bala soon. It also made me realise that I had grown to like the old thing and wanted to keep it in reasonable nick and on the road for as long as I could afford to. 3 years later, it is still going strong(ish).

Anyway, putting the financial considerations to one side (in true Shiteist fashion), would you consider running two identical Discos and keeping one (your current one, presumably) as the resto./decent one for day-to-day use and more gentle laning and then the other, maybe an already part-modified one as the PWOPER OVROAD BEAST INNIT one that you don't mind get a bit bashed about? You already know there are bargains to be had out there and have built up a good deal of knowledge about how they are put together and there would be an element of part-sharing etc.

Not a bad plan, but sadly not sure it's a go-er financially. I think I need to try and find the happy medium between standard and OMG CHEKAPLATE LIGHTS ABOVE WINDSCREEN brigade.

For info, I'm heading back to Landcraft on October 13th. Need another fix!

13th is going to be a bit soon for me, but hopefully I will get along there before the year is out. Very expensive round trip with the V8. Will let you know if I do.

I've really enjoyed this thread, by the way - great to follow how the vehicle has come along from idea, search, collection right through to living with it day-to-day. A really interesting read and it has defintely got me interested in getting one in due time. DECAL-TASTIC!

Yes. As a mate of mine discovered. He managed to rupture a tank. Exciting!

. hmm.... There's the problem. I really fancy some 4x4 fun but I don't relish the thought of a "Disco Inferno".

What's the difference between the 200 and 300tdi engine? (Other than 100 obviously).

I like the way they talk up 3-doors as being better than 5-doors, ignoring the fact that changing sills on a 3-door is a much bigger ball-ache!

Electronic throttle on the 300Tdi, cable and no electro-buggins on the 200. Same power output, same size. They have different gearboxes too. Some rave about the 300's gearbox, others reckon there's scant difference as both can lose synchromesh quite readily.

Having just lifted the bonnet, mine has cable throttle and no EGR valve so maybe only later 300's had electronic fly by wire shizz.

Better sound deadening,multi-V belts with auto adjusters so all the pulleys are different and no swapping waterpumps over.

The gearbox has an oil cooler so the radiator is different too.

All the Maestro dash and switchgear are replaced with Rover items but it's still got Marina door handles.

I think the drive by wire accelerator fitted to automatic 300TDis only.

EFA.

Then this would not be a problem:

Sorted.

I know the seller of the green Tdi in Chatteris, and the chap who's been looking after it for the past 12 months. It'll be an honest sale.

Aye. Looks nice. 3-doors are even rarer in facelifted form I think.

I've calmed down a bit after the fail-laning. I don't think I'm going to go mod-crazy just because I made one misjudgement (which was to attempt that lane - didn't realise how impassable it was until I was already scraping the bank). I love the Disco for what it is. Has a few more clonks than I really like, so I'm going to spend the next few months working my way around the suspension, replacing knackered bushes - starting with the rear radius arms. Still need to get those sills sorted too...

That reminds me, re a project belonging to a mate that I'm supposed to be helping with:

Are the boxes interchangeable at all? Specifically, could a box from a 300 go on a 200?

Mention of oil coolers suggesting that a radiator change might be necessary to go with it? Anything else?

TIA :)
