DW8 Diesel

Petrol engine, minimum 2.0 litre

Automatic gearbox

Ahem.

But Blackburn would have been ok, and a red like that is top of the colour chart.

Hadn't really considered the X-trail... maybe it's just too new (yes I know the one you linked is 12 years old...).

This looks like a good buying guide http://www.mez.co.uk/p38.html

!

Fugging hell, just read through that site, 2 pages of pics and 6hours + to replace o rings.. I like to think i am handy with the spanners but bugger that for a game of soldiers. Top tips on blend motor and hevac fixes though :D

Been tempted by a p38 to replace my classic daily driver but don't think i'll bother.

Probably too new/expensive/small engine, but by uncle has a Nissan Note for ferrying my nan about and it's GR12 for easy access plus there's room for her small fold up wheelchair thing.

Same would apply for the first 'modern' Honda Jazz. (Early noughties.) The oldies love 'em. The CVT is a joy.

A Niva has fairly big doors, low sills and is the right height...

Just a shame about this bit:

Petrol engine, minimum 2.0 litre

Automatic gearbox

We have one here just now, with its engine out...

Didn't think of that, and I've a similar one sitting outside right now:

P1010224_zpsde41de9b.jpg

It's my father's S-Turdo, and suits the weather a bit better than the R8.

P1010228_zpsff661a14.jpg

The gear-change is horrible, but that wouldn't be an issue on an auto. There are loads of cheap auto turbos about. Some on LPG. The steering is lifeless, and it's painful at the pez pump, but otherwise ace.

Non turbos are easier on the wallet and gain a hi/lo box.

P1010227_zps8869ef9c.jpg

There's a sill lip of about 3 or 4 inches. The seats aren't as high as many other suggestions, probably the same as a Legacy Outback. (Those are ace, available with a 2.5 flat four, or 3 litre boxer six from the SVX.)

Thank you all; of those, the Espace looks like it best fits the brief, but not with 1998cc. Have to go looking for a V6 in a body that big! Actually, need to try the boss in and out first, make sure she can sit in without effort. I didn't consider it, mostly because it's a Renault!

We have considered the Note, but that would depend on her qualifying for Motability, we don't know yet if we can get that. It is a bit on the small side but if we can get a new car, on her benefits, that comes close to what we need, then it would do. And I could go out and buy shite  just for my commute. Note is probably top item on the Motability shopping list. 1.6 Acenta auto, in red.

Just a thought... imagine the tail-lights of a Note, grafted onto the fins of something like an Austin A40.......... 8)

^That Voyager is seriously nice! I need to fire off another angry email to Dublin to force the issue of money, I think. Stand by for a road trip story....

After re-reading this thread all the way through (and having a few chortles along the way), can I just ask...

There's a P38 Autobiography near me, which has been sat down on its' haunches for about 18 months now. The voice in my head that keeps saying 'Go on, knock the door, make them an offer, what could possibly go wrong?' is a monumental fuckwit of the highest order, right? 'Cos the only conceivable answer is 'everything', and the big lump of luxury loveliness would be a world, no a universe, of pain, expense and hassle, wouldn't it? Kthxbai...

CreepingJesus the true shitter reads all the advice, takes it all on board then ignores it anyway. If it's been abandoned it's probably got a long list of horrible thoughts. Then again if it's cheap enough it may look good rotting outside your house.

I'm tardy to the party here but I don't think anyone's suggested a CR-V:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-CR-V-ES-AUTO-FULL-SERVICE-HISTORY-2000-W-REG-EXCELLENT-EXAMPLE-L-K-/121086700295?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item1c31546b07

Tall, high up, automatic, good performance and uber-reliable. Having owned one for a year I can't recommend them enough and the Mk1 is getting nicely cheap now. That one's even a nice colour. I can't comment on the autobox as mine was a manual but I have heard it's supposed to be pretty good. The only downside was fairly heavy fuel consumption for a 2.0 but given you were looking at a Range Rover maybe that isn't a deal breaker!

Late you may be, but thank you for the link. In fact someone did mention the CR-V in passing, along with the HR-V, but I glossed over both. Occasionally I see a CR-V for sale in this area; I haven't inspected one closely yet. I did have a lift in a HR-V in Cyprus, which seems to be where most of them are now as the expats love them. The CR-V listed above comes with photos of the interior, vital for my purposes. I can see there's quite a sill between floor and door, so it's off the menu. We need (Mrs R needs) level or very-near-level access. Oh, and good call on the colour! :D

Today I had a look at a Hyundai Trajet on a nearby forecourt. That does offer suitable access, and I know you can get a V6 auto, so it's a possibility. I do like to keep some options open. How it drives, I have no idea, but if I find one suitable, a test drive isn't hard to arrange. The one I looked at this morning is a diesel, and black, two serious strikes against it.

Economy? Not really an issue. Not because I'm loaded, but because I believe in (if possible) buying a vehicle appropriate for the job and worrying about economy later, unlike so many people out there who specifically buy an economy car and kill it by expecting it to do all kinds of stuff it wasn't supposed to do.
