Are ancient tyres dangerous even if they look OK?

I did just type out a very long post about rubber, tyres and braking distance but sod that.

Here's a hypothetical situation for you Luxo.

A member on here was involved on an accident where they weren't at fault but the other vehicle had 15 year old tyres on it, who would you suggest they sue, what legal precedents would you use and how much could they get?

LOL-O-TRONIC :lol::lol::lol:

Think of it this way, you find a pack of unbranded johnnies from 1986 - would you use them  Seriously you need to factor the use - pootling around locally on dry sunny Sundays, I think you can chance the stomils. Sitting at NSL on the M6 for 2 hours, you might be the next star of Police Camera Action (rebooted obviously innit). I do 25-30k a year and buy branded quality tyres simply because they grip/brake/quieter/last longer than cheapies. If I did a couple of hundred miles a month I'd suffer what ever probaly.

It's a matter of personal judgement, isn't it, really and the same rules apply to the tyres as to any other part of the car - as some have already said, if it's legally able to pass an MOT then it comes down to whether or not you personally consider that it's suitable for the use to which you're going to put it. My personal belief is that brakes and tyres are never worth skimping on, if they're not in what I consider to be good condition, they'll be sorted.

In my field-found Nova I felt rather uncomfortable about taking it up to 50+ mph given that one of the rear tyres looked absolutely ancient and was very perished. It had passed an MOT but I was not satisfied it was suitable for prolonged use. Had I kept the car, I'd certainly have changed it.

Posted

They are allowing any car made before 1960 to be MOT exempt, having some old tyres on a car is hardly an issue!

Posted

They are the only thing between your car and the road, it really isn't worth risking, yes you might get away with it, but equally you might not, you can earn more money to replace tyres, you cannot be replaced instead of tyres.

Choose wisely.

Sunlight does horrible things to tyres - the rubber goes hard and plasticky then starts to break down. Out here in the Middle East they last about 3 years - back in the UK 10 years maximum in my view. I've had several tyres fail back home due to age related weaknesses.

There's no law imposing a maximum age on tyres, and a 30 year old tyre can easily pass the MOT, so it won't make a difference either way. 8)

I most certainly would, although not straight away as I'd have my lady let it grow for a couple of months while I cultivate a patchy 'tache, roll up the sleeves of my suit jacket and locate a bike shed for some eighties loving to a Kajagoogoo soundtrack from a walkman, and maybe wear white moccasins.

An eighties noddy only had to help avoid producing illegitimate offspring, now they need to stop all sorts of nasty doses and be up to the job of vigourous bum love, likewise your tyres need to be good, lots more potholes around, far more near misses as the motoring publc become ever more idiotic. Driving accordingly should see you ok, but if you have a blowout on a motorway will the dozen fucktards behind you have been maintaining a braking distance and then pass safely while you hobble into the hard shoulder, or will the middle lane zombies only snap out of it as they plough into you?

Anyone else found that crossplys seem to fair better than radials? I share a bike trailer with a few pals and none of us are up for buying new 10 inch tyres for the thing so most rubber comes from the tyre walls at various motorsport venues. We's had a few blowouts as you might imagine though the cracked crossplys have out lived all the others...

Hmmm, strange. It used to be a spinning Ford badge but it has gone if I paste the url. I've deleted it so should be fine now but my Crewe Chronicle thing has gone as well which is strange.

I suppose it depends on where the tyres have been, how much wear they have on them etc...recently, one of the rear tyres on the Micra decided it had enough, it slowly deflated until I was driving one day, I could hear the tread rumbling on the road quite loudly. I had to change it so opted to use the spare wheel. The spare wheel up until that point had never, ever been used, the tyre had never seen tarmac and the wheel never mounted, the tyre was an original supplied spare wheel from new with its original Dunlop tyre, the wheel and tyre then are virtually brand new. I never thought I'd have use it and to be honest I didnt want to, but circumstances called for.

Next day I got both rear tyres changed by some "recommended" rip off merchant, what I got were 2 mismatching crappy tyres slightly smaller in size than they were supposed to be. During this week I found one of the tyres deflated, again. I didn't know whether some cock jockey had let it down or whether it was the tyre itself, I suspected the latter. That tyre was today to be found to be over 10 years old, it looked it aswell, glad I got rid.

If I came across a set of 4 original spare steel wheels with thier original Dunlops, never mounted on a car for the Micra, I might just be tempted.

The oldest tyre I've ever found was one of two very perished, remould crossplies (of different brands) on the back of an Austin Seven. Dated 1956.

The ones on the Atlantic were about the same age. Got a new set of FX4 radials to replace them.

I was looking at the Alto's tyres this morning, they are pretty cracked and dry looking being 28 year old originals still so I've bit the bullet and bought a new set, The local cheapest garage wanted £156 all in, fitted but a search online found me www.tyretraders.com who want £97 for a set of 145/70/12 Nankangs delivered, I'll have to pay to have them fitted but that will only be around £20 so I've just ordered the set.

I've never ordered tyres online before so I'll be interested so see how this goes.

I only buy tyres online and have them fitted locally for between £5-10 per wheel. The worst experience I've had is tyres taking two weeks to turn up, but that's because I was so keen to save ten quid and get Quidco cashback (which I never got!).

Camskill are good in my recent experience, as are Longstone for vintage stuff.

Not sure if they cover all the UK but i've used Event Mobile Tyres the last couple of times. Decent pricing and they come to you which is handy.

Nankangs seem to get a pretty good reputation for Chinese tyres. I've been looking into new summer (ha ha haaa) tyres for the BX. Found the new labelling actually quite useful, allowing me to focus on wet weather grip ahead of noise and fuel economy. Haven't actually bought any tyres yet, but it is helping me make up my mind.
