Wow, that’s quite amazing :D Compliments.

Those are great :D

We must all be mad to think so but they're still great.

Fan-sodding-tastic!

As has (rightly) been said already on this thread the beige one is superb, though I wouldn't kick the red one out of bed either.

Posted

HOLY MUTHERING FUCK! That beige one is mother fucking epic.

These things were so horrid when they were new, I dread to think what it would be like now after driving a modern car. Well done.

You should start a Shite Car Hire club in the vain of one of these super car hire clubs that rent our Ferraris for £1000 a day. You could rent FSO's out to shitters for £5 a day. Sign me up!

That’s actually a really good idea...

Rescuing not one, but two FSOs? Really?

Fan-bloody-tastic! It's been said by everybody else but that beige one is fantastic, however I'm quite bowled over by the charms of the red Caro. :D

What a superb sight! Whats the story behind them? That beige one must be supa rare but do any. With the windowless rear pillar still survive?

Posted

Blinkin' marvellous! The beige one, in all its grimness, is a joy to behold. The later Caros were quite a nice looking car I always thought...certainly no worse than the equivalent Nissan Sunny or Hyundai X2 .

Topness of purchase, Sir! :P

Blimey!, That beige one is really amazing! those white wellers really suit it too, Well done on finding it guys!

Thanks everyone, with regards to the question about there being any rhd survivors of the windowless c pillar variety. I know of a red one in London, I have a photo somewhere I will post when I find it. There are also a few rhd in Poland that were repatriated a few years back. They appear on alegro.pl from time to time. I think an mr78 "borewicz" is THE Polonez to have but I'm just happy to have one with the old rear light setup and the twin headlights.

Both the Polonez and Caro are now safely in the barn. "Feta" decided not to start when we got back from delivering the samba roller to sambas but a tow off cyanide Steves Iveco daily got her jump started. The 125 pickup has gone off to cyanide Steves to join up with the Caro truck he is restoring and also Richiegs Polonez that is having its mechanicals sorted.

Happy Days :D

Got any interior shots of both for a comparison of these two rare treats ?

I was at a proper old country garage on Saturday buying some NOS parts for my two '80s Subarus ('81 Gen 1 MV pickup and '86 GLF 1800 Hatch). Turns out after they relinquished the Subaru franchise in '91 they took on FSO. On a shelf in a backroom were these:

In the "DEALER ADVERTISING AND PROMOTIONAL SUPPORT MANUAL" was this frankly hilarious artist's impression regarding dealer corporate identity. Make sure you read the text, too! (it's oddly compelling!)

IMG_0325.jpg

Did anyone ever see an FSO dealership that looked anything like that? Clearly a former Mercedes-Benz franchising manager had joined FSO and wasn't quite "on-message" yet...

Most of the dealers I recall seeing were old buildings with an FSO lightbox nailed on the side!

Just fantastic :-)

Those dealer books are GR8. Did you offer them a fiver for them? Shame if they ended up in skip.

Posted

very impressive, someone buy that man a pint!

I hope you got those FSO folders too Owain?

Posted

I'm in shock!! I had all those folders on my desk at work in the late eighties early ninties! To think they probably ended up in the skip :(

We need to buy these!

Posted

The epicness of the purchaseage (+ shiteporn video) almost got matched by the dealer folder.

WE WANTZ MOAR SKANZ.

I've somehow missed this thread, which given my penchant for anything manufactured "out east" is odd. This man is an Autoshite saviour of quite spendiferous proportions and I am totally impressed. Apert from Nigella Lawson  I can think of little else that I should wish to find under my Christmas tree than that beige FSO Polonez! :)

YOU ARE A LEGEND!!!

Someone asked if there were any surviving windowless c pillar Polonez left in rhd form. This one was still around in 2010 according to the dvla but I don't know of its current status. I'm not sure where it is, I found the photo on a polish forum.

On a side note I'm off with cyanide steve and Richieg to collect another Caro today. It was destined for the oval so we've saved it from that fate.

Were also going to give this the once over with a view to collect in feb.

How appropriate is that plate! I have the beginnings of one after looking through this epic thread.

Red 125P 1300 saloon, D641WTF where are you now? That (until last year  ) was the only car I'd ever bought split new from a main dealer, in Reading as I stayed & worked down there at the time.

Get this, no word of a lie; I sold it back to said dealer after owning it for three months because I found another Austin A60 that Allah, Buddha, Jesus and the flying spaghetti monster told me to buy. The dealer gave me back £80 MORE than I'd paid for the car as he had a buyer lined up and no new stock arriving any time soon.

WTF was equipped with a pukka home-made wooden radio surround so that the dash looked more like that of an Italian 125, also so that the radio stopped falling out when I drove through potholes. Had that A60 (RLK361E I know exactly where you are...) not come along and demanded my cash, I'd almost certainly still own the 125P now. I soaked the thing in Ensis V as soon as I got it home from the dealership so I have a feeling it wouldn't have rotted away.

Damn! What should a chap flog himself with to make up for this most grave of shite-related faux-pas?

I expect to work up many, many more trouser fillers as a result of this thread.

If anyone posted a piccie of a Caro 1.9D, I'd have no choice but to ejaculate spontaneously regardless of where I happened to be at the time.

I know where it is and it's got my name on it...

Those FSO dealer identity books were probably adapted from Mazda - the importer (up to 1991) was MCL, which also handled Mazda.

From 1992, FSO was imported by a different importer run by two ex-MCL directors, so the manuals would probably have been exactly the same.

Damn, that anti-corrosive fluid, as used on oil platforms, etc. cost me a bloody fortune and the car didn't even live long enough to reap the benefit. I'd just have used Waxoyl instead if I'd known it was going to die so soon.

Here is my Caro 1.9d ....
 Oh no, and I just put my last pair of Ys through the washer.....

I s'pose WTF must have been crashed or something, that's an awful shame.

I'd like to think that some eccentric collector with vision took it off the road and has been waiting for a suitable time to recommission the car. Now would be good if so. More likely it's dead but as its last date of liability predates SORN by some years, there's always hope.

Loving the 1.9Ds. Medals should be issued to anyone who's saved one or more of those. All the joy of a petrol model but without the frequent pushrod-straightening sessions.

An update on the Subaru / FSO Dealer. Thanks to Owain putting me in touch with this Ex FSO dealer, last week I contacted them and arranged to visit and see what he had there. After walking around for an hour or so Hyperventilating with my heart pounding out of my chest we came to a deal on his entire FSO parts stock, plus dealer signs and associated paperwork including the folders of course :D I've already taken the folders you can see in the above picture and 3 boxes of parts and I'm due to go back in the new year and fill my van with the remainder. To say we are happy in the FSO Club at the moment would be an understatement!
