I can't remember much off it as i was only 7 and slept through it all, I can remember the trees being across the road and tiles all over the garden though, Funny enough i was chatting to a workmate about it yesterday, he started the docks in 1985 so was at the port the following morning, he reckoned it was total carnage, containers everywhere and roofs of the giant sheds being ripped off, the managers just sent everyone home leaving the forklift drivers behind to clear the mess up. (Michael Fish) The truth in the 1987 blunder is that Michael Fish was not referring to the bad weather that battered the South of England, a woman phoned up asking if they would be a hurricane in Florida where she was going on holiday, Michael Fish said they would not be a hurricane. He then went on to say to battern down the hatches as some stormy weather is about to hit the South of the UK. No one expected the amount of carnage that night brought. One is actually still on its side over on the far side of Clapham Common. You see it on the left as you go round the one-way bit pointing towards Wandsworth. A massive tree did blow over down one of the big roads near me though - a big road lined with very tall trees well over a metre in diameter. One of them had blown across the road and was propped up by the tree on the other side. If the other tree hadn't been there it would have gone through the house. Probably. I dont suppose Mr Fish is particularly chuffed about it! I went out the next morning to do my paper round, there were bins, tree branches and roof tiles all over the place, I remember a nearly new Rover 800 with a tree laying straight down the middle and the biggest supprise was swinging my bike up to a house on a new estate and finding the garage roof laying in the drive infront of the garage. The road WAS lined with big old trees, all of which bar one fell down squashing much old rammel in the process. Dad, 2 week old lada (only car he's ever purchased new in my lifetime) picked up some minor dents as it was saved the full force by the neighbors mk2 cortina. The fella in the flat upstairs had his mk4 cortina estate rear end KO'd though we saw it going about only a few weeks later in pickup guise.
