Ah, the memories of the mechanical speed controllers... battery getting too flat, servo doesn't have enough juice to move, thing would bugger off in whatever direction it was pointing and you'd have to go run after it lol

Yeah, I remember that all too well! I'm by no means fit but I remember breaking the "fat kid 100 metre dash" as my beloved Mud Blaster headed towards the lake at Sutton Lawn at full pelt. The alternative was you could run the servos off the main battery, but then as they died you got very jittery controls.

Mech speed controllers were also brilliant, keep them nice and lubricated. I once found out why the plastic cover was fitted over them during a bit of wet weather running, a bit of splash and some lovely arcing burned all the way through the controller board. Can also remember the marks left on fingers by the metal resistor shield after a decent run....

Lankytim, that Primera is exactly what I had in mind when I started this thread. Winner!

It goes without saying that if anyone has anything for sale, PM me - although it appears to be very hard to get fully grown adults to part with these things ;)

The Primera seems to be rare as fook, although they do turn up on ebay from time to time. Anything Tamiya seems to be in strong demand but if you search under "radio control cars" on ebay you often get clueless ebayers selling them as simply a "RC car" or something, that often results in a bargain!

Ahahaha! Tamiyashite. I've slimmed my collection down a wee bit, but it still comprises:

DSC_0317a.jpg

Battered Lunchbox and QD Monster Beetle.

DSC_0314.jpg

M02 Alpine A110.

DSC_0310a.jpg

FF02 Peugeot 306 Maxi.

DSC_0305a.jpg

FF01 Renault Clio Maxi - this is the same chassis as LT's Primera.

I should have a Lunch Box with a better shell than that but needing radio gear and batteries somewhere. Also a Kyosho (I think) Peugeot 405 petrol powered thing. No idea what state that's in.

That is unless somebody has thrown them away 'for me'. I did have the Tamiya Chevy pick-up shell, and a Mk2 Astra GTE shell (I think that was for the Kyosho) but they disappeared presumed binned some time ago

Stupid Question time - does a FF01 or FF02 chassis indicate FWD?

I have seen some front-drive chassis, but was led to believe these were 4WD with some bits removed.

I quite like the idea of a front drive 1:10 car with a suitably shite body on it getting thrashed by loads of proper cars down at the park.

FF01 is a proper fwd set up with the motor in the nose. I think FF02 is similar but can easily be converted to RWD by swapping the steering and running it backwards. I think.

Tamiya re-released loads of their kits so as a result the parts are easy to get. My first one was a Hornet back in about 1987. Great car for a little kid because it's quite big, quite fast for a first-timer and it'll drive pretty much anywhere. It's not the strongest car out there but you can bodge it back together with stuff from the DIY drawer at home. It also takes a standard sized 540 motor so upgrading it is easy. I can't remember which one, either the Frog or Grasshopper, came with a 380 motor which is smaller. The main reason I'd go for a buggy over a road car or a monster truck is simply because you can use it anywhere and it's sort of designed to go round corners fast.

Most modern stuff now comes with LiPo batteries and brushless motors which all requires different speed control gear and chargers to the old stuff. No idea how interchangeable it is I'm afraid.

MEGA FRED BUMP

I'm vaguely looking for a Tamiya rc car to pretend I'm 15 again.

They are much too expensive for me so I'm looking for vague listings to try to find potential bargains.

Can anyone help ID the cars in this picture? Megapotatovision image copyright ebay seller.

I think the Peugeot is possibly a Tamiya, no idea on the other, possibly BMW E46?

Got another picture from the seller now, the 206 is clearly smaller, maybe 1/14 scale.

Don't recognise the bigger chassis, possibly a Tamiya quick drive?

The bigger one is a 4wd tamiya chassis. Think it's a kit, rather than a quick drive.

Excellent, thank you.

Probably worth a bid then.

I thought it might be quick drive as most of the kit tamiyas I've seen have a more open chassis.

I had these two. Got the 4wd Hotshot new after saving up for what felt like years, originally it was orange and silver but later I found some Humbrol flourescent yellow paint and redid everything in that. I used to enjoy taking the rear driveshafts out of the hotshot so it was rear engine/fwd and great for wheel spinning the battery life away. Also use to use it in the snow. Well, more like under the snow. The brat I bought cheap from a chum and put the flames on it, because I did art and was an artistic teenager. And flames were cool back then. Still got both in the loft. That was a trendy bedroom in the mid 80s btw.

This is the kit I exchanged my sweaty, hard earned paper round money for back in 1997 or so.

Would be nice to get the same one again but not for £250!

My friends mainly had touring cars: A4s, 850s and the odd Impreza or Cossie, but I ended up with the Alfa as it was the cheapest kit in the shop (Beatties, Nottingham.)

Can't remember what I did with the car in the end, think I may have crashed it and broke something and sold it for "spares or repairs" to a mate for too cheap.

Kind of like what I do with real cars now.

I have a 1980 Sand Scorcher in the attic.

And I had the Monster beetle. Hmm, small world.

i've still got a Tamiay Escrot Cosworth in Ford Motorsport tiger stripes livery and a red Alfa 155 DTM car in the lost upstairs.

the tyres have all perished on the Ford but the Alfa seem fine, i do still have a radio transmitter thing to go with them, they haven't seen the light of day in years and i should really get rid, at the moment they are cluttering up my loft.

as a nipper i had a Tamiya monster truck thing. had the body of a Ford F140 truck, and shared its chassis with some other cars. when i say nipper, i mean 18 cos i went and spent some of my student grant on it almost as soon as i got the cheque in my wee hot hands!

Happy Dayz.....

is there any value in stuff like that or are the cars above really just bin fodder?

(edit - Google says it was a "Blackfoot" monster truck)

I sold my Tamiya Mondeo to a mate who still has it, wished I'd hadn't, but he spent ages recommissioning it after it had sat for 10 years in my dad's loft, rebuilding the suspension, steering and shockers on it, and putting on new tyres

Bin fodder.

I will give you a few quid for them though.

I had a Monster Beetle, and ruined it, attempting to turn it into something that would accept a touring car shell.

Then I ruined a Kyosho Integrale, by repainting it red, with black windows and reshaping the wheels with a Stanley knife.

Mind, about a year later I broke for parts, a genuine RS1600i and S1 RST with a mate.

They were his cars. We were 15 years old.
