The Doctor, SOGA and fit for purpose

I don't have any experience of or much knowledge about the doctor so don't really feel qualified to spout an opinion on it. However, from what I can see, it's not the fact he makes a profit that has upset people, but the fact that he allegedly puts untrue information in his adverts and engages in shill bidding. I've no idea if those suggestions are true but, if they are, then the complaints seem legitimate (regardless of whether those complaining work for a company).

In the case of SOGA, the 'complaint' is that he is a trader who expects to sell stuff on a private-sale basis. Simple as that, I don't know why people want to construct huge side-stories out of a very simple and very specific legal point (with which, of course, one can agree/disagree/have no opinion).

Certainly, I think the SOGA stuff sounds total bollocks when you're talking about a 10/20/30 year old car, I 100 per cent agree

This is such a stupid conversation. I can't beleive I'm still replying to it.

The whole SOGA/Fit For Purpose thing does actually take the vehicle itself into account (age/condition/price paid). The easy sum up is that if you buy an ex-taxi with 200K on the clock for £300 and it all goes wrong after a few months they wouldn't be interested.

The Golf would obviously have the price in its favour but I think it'd have to be something majorly incorrect with the description (e.g. saying it's never been restored but it actually turned out it was) or have the engine blow up after it gets round the corner. If it was something like the gearbox crunching in third after a few thousand miles, I'm pretty sure it'd be treated as "it's over 20 years old and to be expected".

I'm in full agreement with that. I also agree with the Sparrow that we've spent far too much time talking about it.

You're no more obliged to comment on this topic than you are to bid on one of the Doctor's cars.

It's funny, I really can't fathom why this guy gets so much attention on here and on other car sites. :?

Sure his adverts make my eyes hurt (though I've long since dispensed with any obligation to actually read any of the florid and verbose spoo that oozes from his keyboard) and like a lot of Ebayers who do it for a living yes, he probably does indulge in a little 'creative bidding'. Go on, if you were in that position and it was your livelihood tell me you wouldn't do the same occasionally, just to get things moving...?

But as has been pointed out, no-one's forcing anyone to bid on his cars and I dare say if I were to buy one I'd feel a hell of a lot less ripped-off than I would if I'd spunked £10k on a Shitroen from Uncle Arnold that would lose £2-£3k in value the day I drove it home.

He's a motor dealer, why shouldn't he make a profit? We accept that every other retailer makes a profit from selling their wares, I don't see a problem with this guy.

Fucking hellfire.

I go to hospital for my daily IV and come back and its up to 3 pages!!!!

Wow, cannot believe this has gone on this long. Surely there are more interesting things to chat about? Or maybe not, a matt black triumph was topic of conversation for long enough, why is this forum so biased towards slating others? its not just that, but its the assumptions you make about people that's wrong, why judge what you don't know.

If you read the posts, most of them aren't slating people. It's a discussion, where sometimes people have different views. That happens in life.

Judging what we don't know? Well I know the motor trade, and it's a gamble. You buy summat at auction, or get a trade-in. You give it a top value, you clean it up and service it, yet you know nothing about the history really. It might well be a 3000 miles p.a. Vicar's Wife's car, but if her Son has thrashed the cunt out of it after he's dropped her off at bingo, nobody's going to admit to it, are they. If it's done 45k p.a., it's going to look tired on the forecourt, unless it's a bit knobbed up. Polished, bits of trim replaced, like pedal rubbers, and floor mats..... a good deep polish, a good multi filter service, like it's had by the fleet operating firm that owned it. Which one's going to be the one that gets all the calls? The low miles, local plated, "historied" runaround? You betcha, but the bargain will be the high miler that has been pampered with top spec tyres and good oil. If they both turn a profit, then business is good. No car dealer around has ever survived by making a total loss on everything they sell. Yes, the Mini made a loss, but it got the company recognised. Then it went to the wall 45 years later.

Selling, as well as buying cars, has always been a gamble. This is why I normally break or scrap my old cars. No comebacks whatsoever.

I find it amazing how everyone apparently finds this thread so shit, yet KEEPS commenting on it. Why not either engage in the debate and say something meaningful, or just ignore it and read a different thread instead.

True, we've all "lied a little bit" when selling a car. Hands up who hasn't.

I used to lie a lot.

I haven't... But I've only sold three cars so it doesn't really count. Did swap one briefly though.

Anyway, I reckon The Doctor is good at what he does and should be left to get on with it. If you're serious enough about something then you'll make the effort to check it out before handing over the readies. C'mon... Would any of us spunk four large on a motor without at least going down for a brief glimpse? Doubt it.

Anyway, for those of you who are still reading, here's a picture of a Tagora.

No, he's been hit in the face by a tennis ball.

You guys are worse than the doctor posing in front of a matt black vauxhall which has a 1275 a-series nicked out of a mint MG Metro.

You have to love the internet. Where else could you find so many people who would come to tell you repeatedly that they're not arsed about something? It's special.

You started the thread!

I SELL MORE CARS THAN PRINCESS DIANA (500 PER MONTH M8)

That Doris in the TAgora looks a right moody cow.

Maybe MonospecSlazengerface has 'trouser' issues?

As long as The Dr didn't buy the Glof cheap by saying it was worthless/brokened I see no real problemo.

There are of course those who will lie to get a decent motor/item cheap.

Variation on the theme was me needing a Fiat 127 Sport gearbox.

Man says £75, no guarantee but known good. Says very rare as blah blah wears. OK. Don't buy it.

Somehow I ended up with 2 spare.

Phoned same man 6 months later.

Offered him the boxes.

Answer - not worth a carrot, best thing to do is put them in the bin. When challenged as to why they were rare 6 months ago but now worthless, the phone was hung up!

So in summary as long as a honest profit is made - so what?

Caveat Emptor......... :roll:IF your stupid enough to spend large amounts of dosh on a car you haven't viewed......it serves you right

I once kissed The Doctor. He gave a little bit of tongue but refused to go any further, I left confused and lonely and feeling ever so slightly ripped-off. THE BASTARD.

Posted

Well sorry but complaining about your encounter makes you yet another Doc knocker. Going tongues with your first kiss clearly scared off the poor chap.

Wasn't Doc Knocker in Carry On Nurse? MATRON!!!
