Are there any cars you have owned and regretted selling?

Come to think of it, I've never sold a car on. They all come to the end of their life, in my hands. Regrets, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention...

The one I can't get past, and maybe never will was my Mondeo Ghia X. My favourite old Astra, I gave up on with 187,000 on it, and it was epically shagged. Not really a regret, it had a good innings and did us well. Ditto for a few others we got our money's worth from. But the Mondeo was a bit special, even for me as a confirmed Vauxophile, and if only I'd had the welding and fixing skills of a demi-god, it would still be trolling along. Definitely regret sending that one over the bridge.

But that's the way it goes, when you buy 'em for pocket money and run them 'til they drop. No time for sentimentality, best get on to the next one.

TBH I don't regret selling any of mine other than all the OSF tin I've owned, even then I'd only still want them for financial reasons.

I think that there is a bit of a pattern emerging here :D

Alfa Romeo 156 Mid-Wales by geoffp5, on Flickr

Kept for seven reasonably trouble-free years, and only sold couple of years ago because I needed something a bit roomier.

Also the second Saab 96, a 1976 96L, that needed restoring but a change of job meant that I hadn't got the time. However, it did go to a fellow Saabist who did a decent job of restoring it and I only lost £80 in six years (a record for me  )

DDM 798C, Hillman Superminx. Went from barn find with some rust and dodgy brakes to a 55k-from-new honey (well, maybe syrup. Still sweet but not quite the real deal) which got painted a fetching shade of BL Black Tulip, and then in a massive attack of stupidity swapped for a rusty Vauxhall with an engine thirsty for all fluids.

Saw it a few years on used on ITV's The Royal as a prop car and according to The Man it's still on SORN somewhere. I'd love it back.

XRU 853K, "That orange pickup". Vauxhall Victor FD custom wagon. Kept it and kept it and kept it, saw the rot setting in, sold it to the guy who had "wanted it so very badly for ever and ever to restore and run". He kept it for 6 months, painted sharks teeth on it, tore the brakes out and flogged it on. No idea where it is now.

G52 OYC, Nissan Bluebird ZX Turbo. Never got the smell of the magic trees out of the interior. Sold it in a hurry with an epically shagged headgasket before I left the country. Sad to see it go but it got refitted with a new engine from a Sunny and went on to be shiny and loved for several years afterwards. Probably gone to the crusher by now but still miss it, but it did at least go on to be cared for.

Getting all sentimental now. Saying that, there's some shite I've owned that I really don't miss, and some I'm just indifferent about. I guess it all evens out.

Hello and welcome to the site Pandarus, You must be the chap that works with my wife at Willis, I remember photographing your tidy white Panda a few years ago, theres a few of us from Ipswich on here now, You must start a introduction thread and post a few photos of your older cars, there's lots of Fiat love on here!

As for cars i regret selling, most of them!, My red B reg Escort from last year is still sorely missed as well as my Blue E reg one too and I have days where i still had my BMW 1602 as well :(

Hello Trigg, I do indeed work with the very nice Mrs T.

Thanks for the welcome, I really am enjoying this awesome site :D

Posted some piccies earlier of some of my Fiats a little earlier on, enjoy...I enjoyed looking through them again.

These days, I certainly wish I'd realised how much future demand there would have been for the old Celeste that I owned:

It languished in a scrap yard due to a broken leaf spring, everything else was in excellent condition...arse!

BullitLHS.jpg

When I sold this immaculate 32,000 mile Persona I was quite pleased that it sold so quickly. About a week later, I thought WTF didn't I just keep it for an occasional use car when I was home in the UK - it only cost £550 FFS!

I do have a wistful moment when I see a nice twin cam Corolla but I got a great price for mine when I sold it I wasn't regretting it - but now that I see the going rates, I wish I'd kept it now! Thankfully the Irish owner that has it now has it in great condition.

Sorry for the pic repeat but that looks suspiciously like the Elan Valley...

Is very interesting to note all of the Alfa love. Rose tinted glasses or where they REALLY good? I'm going to say REALLY good with mine.

When they work, they are brilliant. Its just the rest of the time thats the problem...

I loved my 145. Fast, comfy, sounded ace and I could happily sit and look at it for ages. The only problem was that it could also be a fuggin money pit that broke a lot.

Also the ex-Mr B Cav automatic that took me on two long trips in ten days, never missed a beat and was absolutely ace to drive. Miss my old S3 XJ6 (probably nicest car I've owned/driven) but then it was smoking it's bollocks off, starting to go rusty and was swapped for a GL1000 'plain Jane' that had been made into a lowrider, CJX 21V I think the reg was. Shouldn't have sold that either.

I can honestly say hand on heart that mine was probably the best car I've ever owned.

In the 4 years I had it, apart from regular servicing at a tame Alfa specialist it 'failed to proceed' only once when the original (6 year old) battery decided it had had enough, and the only things that ever actually broke on it were one of the rear electric windows which I suspect was simply seized due to lack of use, and one of the rear doorhandles came off in my ham-fisted mate's hand one cold morning. The fact that I only got about 26,000 miles out a pair of front tyres was more down to me than the car.....

It was an utter joy to stand at the window and look out at, let alone drive.

I had two minor criticisms of how it drove. One was that the pay-off for immense cornering ability for what is, let's remember a 2 litre 4 door family saloon was a slightly agitated ride on Glasgow's crumbling streets, and the second was that it very nearly caused the premature demise of my boss's brand new Merc ML500 when I went barrelling round a bend at a speed I was well used to in the Alfa and nearly put the thing on its roof!:oops:

I can appreciate that some people have had nightmares with them, but I'd have another one in a shot.

With the proviso that it was owned by someone like me who'd kept it properly maintained. They don't tolerate tightwad owners, that's when they bite back.

I sometimes miss my Celeste, but it was a money pit and I'd never have managed to get it back on the road in a reasonable state.

There was my Renault 10 Auto, too - but that's another story entirely. I got cheated out of that car by the then land owner, setting a precedent of enmity that survives to this very day in my present tenancy situation .

Also, my Peugeot 306 TD. I really should sort my current 'fleet' out and get a nice GTI 6 (so that I own another 306) before they all get track dayed by the true driving enthusiast crew and their prices sky rocket.

What happened to it in the end?

Only one - VTV10Y - an Audi 200T - it was absolutely mental.

Agree with that! Great cars, although not the paragon of reliability that it's rather weird fan club would have you believe..
