Exporting chod... any money in it anymore?

If anyone can put me in contact with a Mercedes exporter I'd be most thankful! :D

Montegos....

Not much point in trying to ship to Cyprus at the moment, I suggest, unless you have access to a fleet of young Merc E220Ds. Preferably black. Even less point trying to ship from, as overheads will be crippling. I would think Africa's the place for your 123/124 series, and probably 405s and Land Rovers; perhaps also ex-AA Bedford Bravas? They are only an Isuzu in a new suit, and Isuzu goes down well worldwide. Might also be worth buying up every Rascal and HiAce you can find for that market. Haha, listen to me, suddenly the business expert!

My advice should be taken with this, every time...

If you want a cheap [ish] Mk2 Escort, you're probably looking at South Africa.

i know you could make more cash filling 40 foot containers with white goods, tv's, hifi & clothes and exporting to africa, but thats another story

EXPLAIN! I remember picking up a 40 ft container full of borked washing machines once, I think it was going to africa ... all this was in the good old pre credit crunch days though....

PM on its way

but for now watch this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... _My_Trash/

I don't think there's much of an export market for FWD Peugeots.

Also, Bedford Bravas don't fare too well in the UK...

Checking out this Jap car sales site as found on the ebay thread...

www.tradecarview.com

£356 for this bad boy seems great VALU, £1000 getting it home is a bit of a stinger, plus it could be a POS when it arrived... i'm guessing id get raped with various test fees to get it on the road too... it would probably amount to £2k odd for a car that's worth 1k....

I wouldn't mind smoking about in it myself though

Share the shipping cost. Get a couple of fellow shiters to buy something too, a 40 foot container and some ramps:

Poland is a popular destination for large barges - A6, Superb, 7-series BMW etc.

The registration issues don't matter because they get sold on and driven straight back here by a family moving to Blighty.

For the past couple of years they've been driving their own cars over but then they have to either sell on a LHD car here for a pittance, or send it back to mainland europe. Buying a RHD car in Poland apparently works much better.

This may belong in the Stupid Question Amnesty thread but...

a) Is VAT payable on used cars bought from a dealer?

B) If so, can this be claimed back if the car is exported outside the EU?

3) And if so, do I have to be resident outside the EU in order to claim the VAT back?

Ta.

As a dealer you can't charge VAT on a used car unless you paid VAT when buying it (which you generally wouldn't)

Give yourself a headache here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/sectors/moto ... cars.htm#2

My answer to any VAT questions would be: "Ask your accountant".

Thanks. I knew it couldn't make sense that you'd pay VAT on a used car, but couldn't think why. Used vans and trucks would be different though, obvs.

It makes you wonder how much they sell for when they get to Africa. On the jap car website I found some U.K registered trucks that had been exported to Japan and were then going to Africa. They must pay about £50 each in the U.K to make it worthwhile!

I stumbled across an African website a while back of a company desperately seeking Roburs and IFAs! Shows how hardcore those things were. Haven't been made for 22 years.
