FSO 125p Estate

If you've driven a Lada Riva you're in the right ballpark. Whether it's fun or shit depends on how it's been looked after, and the conditions around you. One of the drives I most enjoyed, my whole life, was in a 1985 Riva in 1993. Across county on a bank holiday, A49 to Crewe.

Not that far! Why was it so memorable?

check check.... I had this when I was 17. My mum took me to look at it and when we got there said she'd give me the extra for a "decent" car but I was adamant I wanted the Riva :)

It was a very similar drive to the Polonez so I imagine the Riva and the 125P Estate would be hard to tell apart -and they look the bloody same :)

Because the moment I got off the 49, it just seemed to work right. The roads were clear, the car was positivley humming, the sun was shining... everything was just how it should be. A drive doesn't have to be far to be fun. I used to commute 6 miles (9 after we moved) down country lanes at 6am. I did it in a 998 Mini Mayfair, a 4.2 Daimler Sovereign and a 2.0 MG Maestro, among others. It was a barrel of fun! (Except for the Mini stopping every time it rained, obviously...)

Shouldn't be, the Lada wasn't leaf-sprung like the Polonez, but I think the 125 might be more Lada-ish. The 125 estate was FSO's own body based on the 125 saloon; the Lada 21026 estate (the pre-Riva one) was the Fiat 124 estate body, which was different (and shorter). The engines are different too. Lada had their own, FSO used a version of the old Fiat design. Kudos for going for the Riva so young!

The 125p and the Polonez are the same mechanically, I think the floorpans might be the same too. Both have leaf springs at the rear and double wishbones up front.

Cheers Tim, I'd clean forgotten what the 125 used for springing! Well it is over 20 years since I've had my hands under one.

I have somewhere January 1977 Motoring Which. They tested the Lada 1200 against the Polski-Fiat 1500 and IIRC they said they were very similar cars. Which preferred the Lada, although didn't really think much of either and advised its readers to buy something second hand instead.

If I can find time over the next couple of days and coax the Scanner into action then I will upload the test as the Which tests are very interesting as they go into a lot of detail.

I love the car - Id say it's worth about £450 :D

Somehow I doubt Captain Bellend will be putting his money where his mouth is.

So if the value is not in the name what does the 125p stand for? (I am genuinely interested, I just couldn't resist the opportunity of a bad joke. P is not a suffix usually attached to car names).

I chucked a cheeky offer in for this FSO and was politely declined, I think it's going to wind up on ebay soon.

The Fiat 125 was a modified/lengthened 124 bodyframe mated to the previous 1100/1500 underpan using fillets between the body and floor but with new twin cam engines.

However the FSO used the old 1500 engine. the Polonez is the same underneath. The 1500 is quite fast and excellent for doing donuts in a yard, in 1994

Was it low or are they after the moon on a stick for it?

It was on the low side, but not piss takingly low. I think the seller just wants to get the best price for it.

Maybe yugolada is buying it for £450 !

Nope not me sadly :(

Hello all.

My plan with it is to get it running firstly. I have applied for a logbook which should be with me soon.

I'll probably stick it on eBay as it's fair to all that way.

Shame as I am actually quite attached to it now. I think it's the go-faster stripes :)

Also, the seats are quite possibly the most comfortable I've ever sat in!

Sounding a lot like my old Riva

jesus thats shockingly rusty for a p reg car! I know it's russian and old but I'm of the mindset that P reg is quite new to me!

To be fair it does look like it's only that front wing that is rusting to buggerey. Ah, the variations in Russian metal quality control!

Posted

We did cut that off and weld a new one on. The inner wing wasn't much better but the rest of the car was okay.

Posted

Front wings always were terrible on Ladas and FSOs, even if the rest of the car was rust free.

Those wings are about as rusty as my xj6(which maybe for sale!)

p.s. yugolada ,FSO wings also rot.
