Cavcraft Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Fill your stetsons, Warren... http://paulanderson.pikfu.net/set1783444/
Father Ted Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 When I was a kid, twice a year the oil tanker arrived and pumped oil into the mahoosive tank we had behind the garage. Twas great watching him and playing with the big hose.
Mr H Sceptre Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 The way this thread has gone from a discussion about the rights/wrongs of the tanker driver's situation & the subsequent Gvt'spublic's respone to a load of pictues of old tankers has made me chuckle.
willswitchengage Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Well I'm currently stuck with an empty tank, 200 miles from home, at my sister's house in Basingstoke as every petrol station I've driven past today is closed due to these fucking panic buying mongers and don't-think-before-you-speak ministers. Fucks sake! Just to clarify does this message effectively put across how pissed off I am right now? It's fine anyway because I'm a top rate taxpayer... oops hold on I'm a motorist instead
autofive Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 can i just point out that the petrol delivery drivers might take home 45k (more likely 35k) and the 37 hours quoted must be driving hours. not hours worked. That job is a plum job as far as hazchem drivers are concerned, its cleaner than most, sociable hours (but no night out money) and low milage wagons. You cannot just walk into hoyer, even with relevant qualifications and experience, and expect a petrol job, more likely straight onto something smelly and corrosive delivered to the arse end of the country. the petrol job is deadmens shoes.
lancashireclamper Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 The tankers drivers havent even gone on strike yet but I couldnt get unleaded tonight. The people we should really be ripping therefore, are the thick, selfish cunts who are panic buying fuel. Anyway, here's a GR8 tanker: A Needle nose Peterbilt; Why am I thinking of Hirst's avatar??
warren t claim Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Don't need a Class1 to drive one of those, only a Class2 (I think)
hhhugues Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 every petrol station I've driven past today is closed due to these fucking panic buying mongers and don't-think-before-you-speak ministers. I'd assume they thought about it all right. Tell people to "maybe top up just in case" > Panic ensues > Strike is unpopular before it's even started > No one's thinking about the NHS anymore (bonus) > Job done.People just do what they think is best if they're to make it to work / wherever they need to go the next day, you can't really blame them...
wackywacerwill Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Most, if not all the time I don my foil hat and avoid the scaremongering that is the tv news/papers. I presumed that the tanker thingy was a protest backed by the haulage firms to make a stand against fuel prices which I was all for what with it's knock on effects on the cost of everything. Heard about it from some people at work so topped up the transit on my way home so if the shit hits the fan at least we can get on holiday at the weekend, bloody great queue at Morrisons there was too. As I sat in the queue it did cross my mind that the whole thing was a rouse, all siting waiting to have our pants pulled down at the pumps.
oman5 Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Nobody driving a tanker for Hoyer is on 50k or anywhere near. Hoyer is a third party "logistics provider" who were bought in to run the oil company's transport side at a lesser cost than the oil companies themselves could it for. they did this firstly by cutting wages. Yeah, some of the old school drivers who have been on Esso contracts for 30 years are still on mega money and in places like London where blue collar workers can't really afford to live, they HAVE to pay drivers a lot or they wouldn't get any. A mate of mine worked out of hemel hempstead 10 years back on tankers, he was taking home 800 quid for a 37 hour week, but some of the drivers for smaller independant tanker operators earn less than I do for driving a supermarket trolley. It's not clear cut, the big money tanker jobs are all dead man's shoes, much like trying to get a job driving for Ford.Having said that, if i was carrying 30,000 litres of highly volatile liquid behind me I'd want well paying too, and as the tanker drivers are conclusively proving now, you really can't do without them, can you?
scooters Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 I have a lingering suspicion that the 'mishandling'of the communication was a spin ruse to get the public to be angry with the union rather than the government and it has backfired hugely... OK we know that the country in 1 fuel delivery away from chaos most of the time, even chinless antisemitic racist* tosspotts like Great Aunt Maude know's that. No one has actually striked yet - the union has been showing its teeth about the possibility of strike action. So Maude comes on and spouts his guff and spin the 'irresponsible unions' card - ergo we all start swearing at the unions a la Bob Crow but actually, NOTHING has happened yet. Unfortunately for Great Aunt Maude, as he has no idea how much petrol you can keep at home, nor has he any idea how much petrol can fit into a Rolls, because Perkins always fills the car up before the drive back to Maude Towers the attempt to tag the blame before the event backfires spectacularly and actually initiates the end result of strike action before any strike actually occurs! Last time in 1999 I lived in London and had a Vespa, I remember using the petrol from my 1982 Mini to fuel the vespa for 3 weeks so I could get to work - easy with the mini, you just undo the huge jubilee clips that hold the tank down, disconnect the filler pipe and the lifter - stick a cork in the out pipe and breather and hey presto! a Jerry Can!
Andrew353w Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Blimey, I've unloaded a few of these Jet tankers in my time! In the 1970's & 80's I had to climb up onto the top & drop the dip rods into the tanks before the unloading began. All very UN health & safety; the only concession being that I had to hear rubber-soled footwear when doing this. Happy memories! As far as the possibility of the tanker strike, I've just been in Leeds for 3 days on business; up & back for £42 from Kings Cross and a 2 hour journey-BEAT THAT! I don't care if the railways are publicly or privately run, whatever way you look at it,that's excellent value! If the fuel shortage makes people use trains a bit more, make their children walk to school and back and persuade people to shop locally, as opposed to the out of town hypermarket there might (just MIGHT) be an up-side to this. Mind you, the shops might not have much to sell if the van can't deliver the stock in the first place....

My unreserved apologies to all Autoshiters; clearly my consumption of Theakston's "Old Peculiar" in Leeds has affected my judgement more than somewhat! Just off for a spin in the Daf to see who's queuing for fuel......
Autoplas Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 oh look a largely on topic discussion despite attempts by a small minority to turn it into a farce....... Shouldn't there be a specific thread for moaning about about peoples threads

I don't care if the railways are publicly or privately run, whatever way you look at it,that's excellent value! I can beat that. Today I took the train home after having wrecked my car. The journey lasted under an hour and cost a mere £12 one-way.From Nottingham to Sheffield.
Split_Pin Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 I pay £175 for a monthly train ticket to commute between Edinburgh and Camelon, near Falkirk. That's £5.43 per day. Cheaper than driving, plus I dont have to battle with Edinburgh Traffic! Seeing the Conoco Tanker reminds me when a 38t artic one came into our school playground (it was fairly large) as part of cycling proficiency. The lesson was why its dangerous for cyclists to travel along the nearside of an HGV whilst its turning left. They used a cardboard cut out of a cyclist to demonstrate. The whole episode was pretty exciting and gave us lads a break from playing with our Micro Machines.
chaseracer Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 ...Anyway, here's a GR8 tanker: 'Duel' fuel...?
Vin Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 WOW. The picture of the Conoco tanker is a real blast from the past. As Conoco are local, I used to see them all the time. Much smarter than now, when 'Jet' is their main livery. Saying that though, 'Jet' was the main livery before, evidenced by this excellent Leyland Octopus EDIT - What a wazzock I am. It's obviously an AEC MAMMOTH MAJOR

Saying that though, 'Jet' was the main livery before, evidenced by this excellent Leyland Octopus When I worked for a "Jet" garage I remember asking a tanker driver where the name "Jet" originated. He told me that it was from the letters on the first tanker registration that the company owned. At the time I thought this a wind-up, but I'm glad, 30+ years after I pulled my last gallon of 4 star, to have the story confirmed! That tanker is splendid!
Andrew353w Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Beer Tanker drivers going on strikeOH NOES BRILLIANT!!!!
willswitchengage Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 I won't clutter with a re-pic but sandwich board = WINNING Tell people to "maybe top up just in case" > Panic ensues > Strike is unpopular before it's even started > No one's thinking about the NHS anymore (bonus) > Job done.People just do what they think is best if they're to make it to work / wherever they need to go the next day, you can't really blame them... And as some bright spark on the BX forum put it... a nice little sales boost for the economy at the end of the financial year. Ain't dat sweet...
willswitchengage Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Panic buying name and shame Hook, Hampshire Running a gardening business and have lots of lawnmowers to fuel, or is something more sinister going on here? Note the carrier bag to protect the boot lining from petrol spills - it's the Daily-Mail obeying turd that's about to sit down on the driver's seat that I'd worry about.
Cavcraft Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 You wouldn't actually need to put the above details/description in, we can see that bloke is a back-to-front just from the very fact he's got his t-shirt tucked into his round the houses.

Er... I do that too. Andrew: I worked in a Jet garage too, about the same period! 1977-79, the Lighthouse at Formby. Cashiers Reunited.... In fact it was the Tanker Strike of 1979 that spurred me to leave, in favour of my first driving job.
hhhugues Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Heh... for all i said about not blaming panic buyers, there IS a lameness threshold. But i'm a occasional tucker in too, so i won't let that sway me. Did i dream that story of the lady who set herself alight trying to transfer fuel from one can to another in her kitchen(!) after listening to irresponsible ministerial advice ? I was expecting to hear about that all over the news, but then again i spent the week end thus far on a massive birthday bender so i could easily have missed it all...
