Asda are doing 5 litres of own brand 20W50 mineral oil for four quid at the moment. GR9 4 cheap oil changes on old tat.

Thats amazing. Even if your chod needs something better this'll make excellent flushing oil

I've just bought £18-worth of 15W40 for The Volvo

20W50 is only any good for old-tech engines - i.e. most OHV engines.

And Volvo 'red blocks'

I dread to think how many shoppers have whacked that in their modern dailys

Renault's dCi engines will LOVE this

I was reading about this recently, and 20 is the weight of the oil when cold and 50 is the weight or viscosity of oil when it's warmed up. 20 is used in warm environments and starting might be difficult with oil that thick.

20W-50 isn't only suited to prehistoric stuff. My parents' Corolla used to be fine with it. That particular car was a '92, but it was quite a modern engine for its time (16v, EFI etc) and, AFAIK, it was used at least until the end of the nineties without major modifications.

Of course, it wouldn't be suitable for the newfangled turdblowers that demand 0W-30, but it should be alright for most non-turbo engines now that the serious cold is behind us.

PANTS. I was in our (not so local) Asda yesterday afternoon. It was horrible. Taking advantage of a shiters bargain like that would have made the whole ordeal more bearable.

Luxo, to be fair, an old Corolla lump would prolly last forever on just a cupful of any old lube.

Haha, that's true, but 15W-40 was common until very recently. As long as you aren't trying to start it in -10C, some fresh 20W50 would surely be better than keeping the old oil in for the full 20k or whatever insane number the recommended interval is set at.

ASDA and Tesco are hell on Earth. I never go there unless it's for a single item on a specific unmissable offer. I really don't understand why people would subject themselves to that kind of shopping 'experience', when it's not even cheap...

80p a litre.....most XUD's and the like will run on engine oil and being fresh oil there's no filtering required.Bargain.

Interesting, I might try that in the Volvo. Not HMRC-friendly though, so I couldn't do it if the exhaust fumes are likely to be foul enough to attract attention.

Wow, what a deal! Don't Zetec engines need their own special supa-thin oil or something? Surely using this will cause the whole car to explode into flames. Should be fun!

my ecotec (every, component,on,this, engines, crap) 2.2 frontera is currently running 80/90 gear oil in the engine as it spun a big end bearing not long ago and makes little or no pressure... takes a bit of winding ova on a cold morning but its supprisingly quiet at the min and hasnt jacked the lifters through the pistons just yet lmfao :lol:

I think Ford recommended something like 5W30 across the range for a while, which is probably why some Valencia engines didn't last as long as they should have.

yeah all ztec should technically run 5/30... all to do with pressure/flow and fuel econ.. though if a hi miler you can stray up a bit into 10/40 n stuff to stop the burn... any thicker and the lifters will hydraulic lock solid in the cold as the drillings are too small to drain it.. then theoretically you could at worst punch a valve through a piston.. though itd prob just hold it open slightly n missfire in reality.... some early mondeos/scorts n fiestas used to suffer from it when they first came out, they would run for a min or so then cut out and spin over like the belt had broken...think they changed the filters and put a relief spring in it to stop over pressure if i recall.... make the most of my sensible post as you wont get many
