Shite in Miniature II

It's possible that somebody makes a replacement screen for the TR. I still have the one that I bought new way back when there were proper toy shops in every town. It's the same colour too. I remember seeing it the cabinet but sadly they had lost the box, can't remember if they knocked a shilling off the price. :-)

I think shaping up a new screen is fun, but then I'm strange, always have been.  I had a load of Spot-Ons, still have quite a few although they are very VERY playworn now, but the TR was never among them.

There is a website flogging windscreens, steering wheels etc, but there was a sharp intake of breath when I read the price, plus on reflection I'm not sufficiently interested to invest the effort to drill out the rivets and do the needful.

Another good reason to make my own.... ;)

It might be a little thick but I use discarded CD cases to make flush fitting model bus glazing. I shaped the window with a dremel.

That's a nice one Eddy, glad it went to you......If there are any art/craft shops near you some clear acetate sheet (like for laminating stuff) can be shaped - the screens were never works of art on Spot On sports cars anyway!

Thank you kind sir, but it hasn't, yet!  Far be it from me to get in the way of anyone better equipped to take it on!

The windscreen is £2.50 from Steve Flowers.

Just to echo Junkman's timely reminder, Steve's stuff is much cheaper the old fashioned way - by mail order.   http://www.model-supplies.co.uk/

You can buy from him on Ebay if you so wish but he has to charge more and its also much better to get a few things together and save postage.

As a kid I had the original white and blue issue of that Transit milkfloat, got it in 1983 from Woolies in Whitby, along with the MG Maestro 1600. Nice buys

Proving the Lego compatability of the Airfix Quickbuild range. Car trailer made and camper interior made. Need to do a proper sink and hob though.

Junkman, Mr Lobster of this parish has the partwork 1/43 scale RT in stock, looks nice, but not my kind of thing, wish someone would do a more modern British outline double decker in 1/43 scale

I dug mine out this evening. This is what I have:

post-17021-0-82826900-1501456993_thumb.jpg

All from childhood, except the Police Escort. I found that a few years ago down the back of a tumble dryer! It has the most wonderful patina, so I've left it as found.

I feel I had more, but they're MIA. I know I had at least three Escort vans and a red Mini.

That is bloody brilliant.

Shame it is a daft scale, I am tempted when I have cash to respray the Beetle and put Herbie style decals on it, I also have a spare VW badge for the front of the camper that I'm going to repaint silver, once my computer is repaired, I may even have a crack at making some decals for the camper,(pineapple alert, Danger Will Robinson) plus it can be built to look like it has a raised pop top, I did a trial build in standard yellow bricks. It was so easy to fit a towbar to the camper, was just a case of removing the back bumper, putting 2 2x2 plates on where the bumper normally attaches, then attach the tow hitch to that, even the engine cover still opens, trailer was my own design, and has chocs on to stop the load moving around. I do hope they keep to that scale and bring out more, for under £15, it is a pretty nice kit

I think I have that Tomica RT bus somewhere in my stash of too many models. Got some of their cars and vans in 1/43 and 1/64, they are pretty good. On a different matter I've been busy trying to sort out stuff in my model display room (admittance 50p, full body cavity search on way out 8)) and yesterday a friend and I measured up the middle of the room and I can get another six display units there with room to spare. So onto the interweb to have a look around, the ones I have are sold by Argos but thought I'd see what other independent retailers had. Found the same ones on another site so decided to order the six I wanted as I like to support the little guys. But......for some reason I could only order four and only three extra sets of shelves. So I sent them an email via their contact form, slightly sarcastic but not aggressive or rude wondering why I couldn't buy what I wanted. This is their reply:

Hi

First of all why the tone of the email all you need to do is simply advise of the problem and we can help? thee is no need to be so aggressive in your email.

You can purchase the items over the phone the reason why you may not be able to buy this all in one go is because it is payday weekend and therefore it  gets very busy so people have been buying and the stock is too low for you to purchase in bulk. its a simple problem that can be fixed with a phonecall.

what cabinets do you want and where is delivery to?

thanks

Poor English and punctuation, no name on the email and I thought pretty rude bearing in mind I wanted to spend 1100 quid with them. And the idea of a website is so that I don't have to phone them about their bloody stock levels! I have to admit that I did reply and was quite polite until I told  them where to shove their effing cabinets, lol. Then got a reply saying 'Wow you sound like a lovely lol'. Don't know about you lovely people but that really isn't the best way to get my business! Anyway long old waffle comes to an end, Argos got the order and are delivering on the 11th, cabinets will get built and filled and then I'll bore you with more photos of my stuff. Gratuitous photo to relieve the boredom.

I have to say (tea tray poised over head to deflect angry missives from independent traders) that I am increasingly finding this kind of attitude amongst smaller companies.  I am not talking about the local shopkeeper who might be a bit Basil Fawlty - we have had a few of those in our town and I actually find them funny - but the basic inabilities to maintain a website, properly inform spending customers about problems etc.   At least with John Lewis you can send a slightly miffed message and not get a snotbag response.

I can take snooty tailors, garage-owners with a bit of attitude or the odd condescending barman or barber but I would definitely be taking my business elsewhere for a bit of bloody furniture.    For the record (in case they are reading) my tailor is not snooty nor is my barber prone to condescension.....

Just enjoy putting the models on display - I know I would!

Then again if I was trying to compete with Argos and Amazon and probably not making much profit on stuff, and someone said me a self-confessed "sarcastic" email about my stock, I'd probably "flip the table" and stomp off. It can't be easy going against the big boys these days.

Email is very easy to miss the tone of, maybe it came across as far more sarcastic than intended. Always worth defaulting to "polite" imho.

French boot sale find:

post-79-0-06496100-1501566696_thumb.jpg

1:24 scale? Might be rehousing this one when I get back, which now makes me think why didn't I buy the other one they also had for sale? Box slightly tattier, but would still have displayed nicely. Very reasonably priced, sadly they had no others which were of interest.

More sales to be attended, will be keeping my eyes open......

I've got a couple of those, 1/24 scale, both purchased from sierraman of this parish. One is a yellow taxi and the other a red rally car. Quite hard to find in as good condition as that, the boxes can get tatty very easily.
