Brand new car, Halfords wheeltrims

Can anyone else think of an instance where a brand new car was supplied with generic (i.e available to buy in your local motor factors/Halfords) wheeltrims?

I can think of these:

In this case was the wheeltrim a generic one with a BMW badge stuck in the middle? Or did someone copy the trims after BMW had come up with them? I definitely remember badgeless ones (or very good copies) being sold in Halfords a few years ago.

Or were these exclusive to Rover but unbadged beacause Maestros and Montegos had, at that point, no makers' name on them?

A lot of wheeltrims are copied by aftermarket manufacturers, the BMW ones I think were.

My Neon was supplied with these:

Which look generic and I think were copied after..

I LOVED these ones that Renault put on the Laguna RN when it first came out. Unbranded but super cool..

Ever noticed this?

I noticed that years and years ago, but never knew who to mention it to. It was the one thing I could grasp at to be able to relate to gardening.

Was this purely a coincidence?

The BMW ones were their design first, then copied in the early 1990s. The Rover Group ones were always theirs.

On the 'unbranded issue' Austin was dropped in 1988 when 'Austin Rover Group' became the new improved 'Rover Group', probably at the same time the company was sold to BAe.

However Rover never really branded the Maestro/Montego as 'theirs' and nor the Metro either until the new model in 1990.

Yuk, who thought that was good idea?

Some Neons also came with these:

But I think these trims look better and more original:

I recall that in the early 1990s, Halfords used to sell wheeltrims exactly the same as the ones found on late 1980s Chrysler K cars:

I think they were called 'Storm' or 'Tempest' or some other equally inappropriate weathery name.

Back in 1989 when working at a Peugeot dealer it was not unusual for desperate salesmen to "jazz up" a miserable 309 GE or 205 XE with a set of "spazz" (their words, not mine) wheel trims from the local accessory shop, a badly clashing wobbly stripe and an auto reverse cassette deck to create a "Limited Edition"

There was a unbranded wheeltrim maker in the late 90's that made some very blatent copies of manufacturers trims.

There was a Corsa 3 spoke one, an Escort / Fiesta one, a couple of Rover ones among others. All for £12.99 on a market stall near you.

I remember seeing a BMW 518i with truly shit wheel trims - they looked like lidl specials with a bmw sticker in the middle. I thought someone was taking the piss, then I saw another exactly the same.

Some of the cheap sets really are crap - like something out of ben hur.

All the run-out Renner 5s had these trimz. At the time you could get cheapo trims that were very nearly identical. (And you probably still can.)

I had a Tipo with those wheeltrims, they were nicked ovenight whilst parked in a supposedly 'good' part of Hemel Hempstead!

Thankfully the rest of my faithful steed was unmolested.

They were on the Renner 21 as well. Awful.

I've seen these all over the place:-

Knock-off of the worst trim ever fitted to the Mk5 Escort.

These ones fitted to recent Fiestas seem to be expensive genuine copies of cheap wheel trims.

I say that because just like cheap alloy look-a-likes they completely miss the point of trims and leave huge amounts of the rusting steel wheel visible.

I've seen these advertised on ebay as cheapo trims without the vauxhall Badge, there seems to be one or two Vauxhall knock-off going about.

I always thought these genuine Nissan wheel trims looked a little cheap and poundland-like.

A couple of weeks back I saw a newish Micra with these on them:

They are actually proper cheapo trims with a Nissan badge stamped in the middle. Really shit trims.

Anyone ever seen those really crap wide trims that look like Truck wheel hub-caps?

Ye Gods, those were minging. I remember Lada Rivas having those with a smaller diameter. Would prefer the boggo steel wheels myself!

Unless it's one of those rare times I have a car with alloys, I always take the trimz off and roll with the steels au naturel.

Somewhere in the garage is a set of these:

Sadly, the very early XM they once adorned has been part of a Shanghai skyscraper for some time...

I loves genuine wheel trims, but most of the above or horrendously hideous. Attempting to make plastic look like an alloy wheel should be outlawed.

Same here. If I've got a car with incorrect trims, I'll always try to source the correct one as sad as that sounds.

Argo I think made the Ford lookey likey trims, and the ones on the Talbot Express look like the Autoplas ones;looked tough, but cracked easily
