Ive been asked to sell a 1984 B plate maestro for a local elderly lady that has decided to give up driving, her husband bought it in 1985 and its been garaged and well maintained since. Its a 1.6 HLS 5 speed in zircon blue and has a factory steel sunroof, its taxed and mot`d and only done 27k from new with lots of history, bills, old v5, old mots etc, its not immaculate but tidy and very original. Its one of those cars thats only worth what someone is willing to pay but i would of thought due the it being an early one with low mileage it should be worth £400, i will try and add some pics later if there is any interest, if no ones interested i`l try it on ebay.

This sounds lovely!! Will it have the R series lump in at this age?

It is the first of the montego type engine ones, from memory the R series looks like a maxi engine this one doesn`t, im going to get it so il put some pics up shortly.

I havent bothered with any owners clubs, i havent really tried to hard to sell it yet as although ive known of the car for years i only had the call from the lady yesterday to say she`s no longer driving and would i be interested, if its of no interest on here i will try it on ebay.

I now have the maestro with me so i can now update a few things, as the lady has no real car knowledge and doesnt really want the hassle of people coming round we have agreed a deal and the car is now mine to sell on.

Did i get the colour right ? is it zircon ?

It hadnt been used since november last year just occasionally started up to keep the battery charged due to eyesight problems, this is also the reason the lady has now had to stop driving. As it hadnt been used it was a bit reluctant to start today but eventually fired up on its own battery without even a charge or jump start, so may just be down to lack of use as once it warmed up ive driven it round a little and it seems very good mechanically, and once warmed up started fine.

It is taxed till the end of may 2012 and mot`d untl july 13th 2012.

The lady`s husband bought the car from the local austin rover dealer (colliers)here in birmingham in 1985 when it was a year old, it was serviced by them until about 1994 (service book is stamped every year upto 94) and from then its been maintained by a local garage that have also mot`d it every year. I know the propietor of the local garage and this is how i got to know the car, over the years ive spotted at the garage and commented on its condition and rarity these days, when the lady decided it was to go she contacted the garage to see if they would be interested, they told her its of no interest to them but to give me a call as im into old stuff and have often shown an interest in the car, although im into old cars i have to admit im no real maestro fan so i will just move it on to someone with more interest.

Ive had a quick look through the paperwork and according to the service book it had a speedo change in 1990 at 22k so you can assume the mileage of 27k is incorrect and the actual mileage is more like 49k.

It has every mot since 1993 (in recent years it has covered less than 100 miles from one year to the next), it has the original handbooks, stereo, spare wheel (brand new tyre) jack etc, it appears never to have been smoked in as the lighter is unused. It also still has its original dealer number plates.

It has both the old v5 and the new v5 showing the first owner, the second (present lady`s husband), then since he passed away it has been in the present lady`s name.

Overall its quite tidy as you can see in the pics, it appears very solid having had only very little welding to the rear end of the sills for a recent mot, the rear arches are tatty and this was advised on the last MOT. The drivers door mirror casing is broke and there is a scrape on each front arch from going in and out of the garage, there is tape holding the top of the windsreen rubber down but there doesnt appear to be any rust underneath.

The interior although needing a clean is in very good order apart from a saggy roof lining.

Ive taken some pics and said as much as i can think of about the car but if you want to see or know more please drop me a PM.

Fark me that's fab! It won't be about long at that sort of money but if she suddenly decides £200 is a fair price then drop me a pm please!

Looks great, quick spruce of the interior (sunroof leaking?) would do it good and a bit of a shame about the arches but it is a lovely thing...

Thats lovely! Its almost worth it for the plates alone  The zircon blue really suits maestros, the sunroof and surround also look pleasantly free from rot. I'd go for it but have too many cars already!!

Were those pics taken in Hall Green near Webb lane? If so thats very near my parents house. I used to wag school and hang about in the playground in the field behind the Maestro back in the day.

Hey this is absolutley mega, i have never seen a monty or a maestro with a steel sunroof before. Also must be unusual in having the early dash and the later engine. I would love to get my hands on it!

Not at all. The S Series arrived in July 1984, and the 'Tego dash in Feb 1986.

Oh fair enough!!!

If this had the old engine it would be my dream Maestro, I love the wheels colour and and interior. I’m just not a mega fan of the S-series, although its a perfectly decent engine.

I remember blezzing all over in an R-series maestro and it had a sort of unburstable feel to it which which the S-series never has (IMO it feels like you could burst it quite easily).

Dream Maelstrom:

Opal green MG 2.0i, B plate, old dash. Spafftastic!

The O Series was a great engihne, the best motor BL had. The S Series pissed oil out of the cam covers and was nowhere near as good the Family B Voxall motor. They should have left Honda to do the engines whilst BL did the rust and odd design - winnah!

Bump for the weekend, anyone want to get near £400 to save me the potential pain of sticking it on ebay ?

if I added a 5th maestro to the fleet, I'd probably end up forced to live in it by mrs 109

January/feb must be the worst time to try and sell a car, everyone has something to sell and no one has any money due to Christmas!

Best of luck with the sale, i'd love to hear where it ends up, as it's such a rare trim level.
