No, I wouldn't. And I'd wonder about the deep dark secrets of the person who did. Altho', to be fair I get to play with the real thing now and then.

Oddly, the last time I had an actual artic with an actual CB set, I got fuck all but fuzz and beeps, until I got to within range of Tyneside. Where I picked up - wait for it - a couple of vanners. Suddenly BBC Radio Newcastle seemed attractive after all.

My old UK 40 channel (Midland) set is still functioning, ie, it's doing its bit, but I can get sod all on it nowadays. I wonder if it's all the WiFi and mobile phone signals bouncing around, not to mention DAB/DVB.

I absolutely wouldn't. Every Sprinter I've had my hands on has been, at best, a disappointment. They are inadequate, simple as that. Sure they're a big improvement on the shitty old 307 series, but fuck, so is walking! Why would I drive that when there are so many more capable vans* available?

 

*Anything that can be insured as a commercial, in fact.

Downrated to 3.5t to get round it needing a tacho fitted & checked no doubt. I've driven loads of Sprinters, including the uber bonkers 616 (Yup 160 ps engine), with fully auto box, and it went like stink, but was a pile of crap reliability wise.

Also gets round the requirement for a 56mph speed limiter iirc. Still has a 60 mph speed limit on dual carriageways but when has that ever slowed a Sprinter driver?

Also as it's 'one owner from new' it's quite likely the original owner did it because a) maybe the bigger weight ones were longer and/or because they had uprated suspension.

When downrating you're supposed to change the springs (or you were supposed to on older commercials) as if you had a shit load of weight on it would be more obvious to VOSA.

You get a van rated at 5.2 tonnes or whatever, down rate it to 3.5 tonnes and don't change the springs and you could chuck a right load of stuff in the back and it'd sit nicely.

 

Can't see the original owner deliberatly buying a bigger van then getting it downrated to 3.5 tonnes because his licence wouldn't let him drive it, he may as well have just bought a 3.5 tonner in the first place.

There is a logical point to this van, which isn't dodgy. It was their service van.

Think of all the kit that's going to go in the back of a CV roadside assistance van: jacks, compressor, genny, maybe gas welding/cutting kit, toolchests, workbench and tyre changing gubbins. Throw in (literally) the kitchen sink, plus water and other fluid supplies, and that's a fair old weight. Probly under 3.5t, but a regular 3.5t van with all that in's going to be dragging its' arse like a dog with worms, so Billy's point above was near enough, I reckon. Well, it better have that sort of weight bolted into the back, 'cos these heavy panel vans are awful to drive unladen...

It'll be off the tacho, so the mechanic(s) don't have to worry about hours regs when they're on 24hr, and no-one needs a special license of any sort.

It was looking at the full size pic that made me wonder. Orange beacons + top lightbar = service van. The dress-up stuff will be because it'll be taken to truck shows (some of which have service van prize categories) to mix with potential customers.

Mind you, stick on a couple of whippy aerials with Southern Cross flags on the ends, and you'd win REBBEL VANNARZ for evar. And have people like me question your deep dark secrets...
