Laguna V6. Let it die or save the beast?

Right. A lot more people against now. Massive case of head trying really hard to rule over heart here :(

I've had 5 Laguna IIs, all of which cost little more than £100 more than this and were in excellent condition. But it's the engine. I love the spec of this car, not even a spoiler on the back, no hints at all to suggest what a beast it is. But you're right Sterling, the Velour is pretty mouldy by now, and the carpets are soaked. Then there's the fact that I gotta find a fuel pressure regulator before I can even start the thing.

Watch this space, I've got very little self control.

But there is an L reg Fiesta Ghia at auction tonight with 52k miles....

Have to be honest and say wouldn't touch it with a ten foot, disinfected barge pole.

However...having seen the ghost of Elvis in the first picture you might be sitting on a small fortune here :D

Check this VERY carefully for rot, young Sir. These can fall to bits quite spectacularly. Happy Bidding!

What surprises me most about this thread is how little money a currently mostly working 51 plate Laguna goes for. I honestly thought they still sold these buggers new, but then again the amount of time I've spent considering purchasing a new Renault is about the same as the amount I've spent wondering whether I'd pour lemon juice or vinegar on my wounds if I slipped and fell in a carpet gripper factory.

I wouldn't touch one cos I know how much aggro they are, but it seems that the motoring public have also cottoned on to this, hence the low value. Which is a surprise, because generally people buying presentable, newish barratt homes crap like this don't seem to usually have a clue.

I hear the 1.8/2.0 petrol ones are quite nice!

Barring my brief couple of months ownership with a S plate Kangoo van earlier on this year that turned out to be a very decent runner, I must admit that I'm not a great (post mid-nineties ish) Renault fan either.

Indeed, you can pick up a working one for peanuts and personally if I was looking for one to tide me over or flirt with for a bit, that's the route I'd go down. Water damage on modern Renault electrics? No thanks! I feel 'financial armageddon' would be around the corner if you plumped for it in order to use it for anything other than breaking it yourself.

In terms of styling the Laguna II was very nice indeed. I never liked that silver flash on the front of the bonnet though :? . It ruined it for me, personally. There used to be a couple who lived opposite us who bought a new 53 plate Laguna II Estate (or whatever they're called) in that same blue. Proud as punch he was, showing it to me one morning when we met in the street. I'm pretty sure it was the same spec as that but it wasn't the V6. It was on the back of a low loader inside two months...

Thanks ashmicro. It looked great, I got outbid at £250 and din't fancy bidding anymore and getting into the higher fee bracket. I bought the 1991 Jag XJ6 instead :D

This is what I love about the Laguna II. It was so advanced for it's time, it made the Mondeo seem pre-glacial. But Renault hadn't bothered investing in the correct quality kit to make these gadgets last, they just raced to pioneer them before anyone else. This resulted in one gorgeous looking epic fail of a car. I love it, it's up there near the top of my favourites.

I've heard hilarious stories, particularly with the dCi diesels, which even I wouldn't touch. A friend of my uncles was working for some sales rep company. When the Laguna II came out they had 5 1.9 dCis delivered. Once the cars racked up a few miles, the turbos failed on 3 of them within months of each other. The car basically loses power and then revs the bollocks of itself - two of them had the sense to stall the car, but one woman just got out and ran!! Left her Lag revving itself to death... it caught fire and burnt out on the M6 :lol::lol:

Cor, nice Jag! Well, actually, I hope it's the wrong engine with cloth trim. Autoshite spec.

EDIT - blatantly black leather. IR FAIL.

Cor, nice Jag!

Why thank you. I'll introduce her properly on Saturday when I've picked her up. 4.0 Auto, 74k miles, Mar 1991 registered. Box file of service history etc etc. Might just ebay it.

Black leather in Jags is epic. I'd have preferred mine with black leather but it does quite work with the hideously impractical but gorgeous oatmeal.

4.0? Without the supercharger they're not bad on fuel.

Not bad? Ah, But Pete, aint you used to about 1.9mpg?

10 mpg bad, 15 just about bearable, 20+ reasonable. 25+ good. 30+ splendid.

On the Sunday NEC trip the Jaaaaaaaag managed 22.2 average, which was ok. A non supercharged one would have probably done 25.

Yesterday, in a truly sensible Skoda on a very similar run, average was 57.9. That's just mental. However, it was a diesel, so therefore doesn't qualify as a proper car.

I can't really talk, the Volvo is currently giving me an average of 16.4mpg. :|

My thoughts EXACTLY. The Avantime does about 18 MPG and my Mégane sits at 29, so the Jag'll fit in well. Diesel ain't a word in my vocab either. Might get time to pop up at lunch and get the old girl home.

I would avoid that Laguna like the plague. Sitting and getting very wet (I know what Northern Ireland's like for weather  ) for a year is not good for any modern, let alone a Laguna II.

Have you sold the 25 yet? - money spent on getting that recomissioned would be a better bet!

Really?

The Volvo averages 28mpg and TV2 averages 34mpg. Have you got a heavy right foot?

You can't just walk away from that cheap renner....................you needs to run for your life mate.

If the 'want' persists just keep driving the Jag - wah.........this should cure you. It will certainly stop you from affording the renner

The 25 is being made into tin cans tomorrow to make room for the Jaaaaaaaag. I hate to send a car like that to it's doom but I have tried and tried, it doesn't want to co-operate and is taking up one of the very valuable parking spots

A Laguna II is probably the safest car on the road.

If you are travelling on a motorway in one and have an accident you are protected by the 5* Euro Ncap rating and TEN airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, collision avoidance system and the extra protection provided of doubtless being perched on the back of an Iveco 7.5 tonne AA recovery truck.....
