PICTURE REMOVED IN CASE MILFORD READS THISThis shot reminds me of the titles to Only Fools & Horses where one of the background shots is an early 80's overview of the market car park.

Highlights for me are the Fiorino in adriatic blue 8), the van at the bottom left, Barkas??? the Merc van, the robins, and the people having a shufty under the bonnet. As it's York, I assume that the then brand new Jeep Cherokee XJ (behind the bronze MK1 Scrote) probably belonged to one of the many American residents of Harrogate....Could be 84 because of that and the blue Mongtego, but I'd say 85...Only cos that's what it says on Flickr :lol: Great Picture :DEdit- DRAT. Tayne got there before I could edit.....This picture also once had it's own thread a while ago.

As we're on car transportation by rail. I posted these piccies a few years ago, in a now long dead thread, but I think you'll agree they are worth another look at again 8)

Wow, great photos.... I never imagined they used rail transport for new cars that late, some of those photos are dated early 90s. I know that's 20 years ago like, but still there's cars like Rover 400s and Mk4 Escorts on there. Doesn't seem that long ago for a smokey old diesel loco to be hauling cars around the country.

That photo with that lovely looking Consul on the back is fab! :D

That's the beauty of MOTORAIL 8)

Most of the rail car carrying today is invisible.....

As can be seen in some of the previous pics, attempts were made (mainly in the 80s) to try and 'enclose' the Cartic 4 (the main double deck units which were of late sixties vintage) with mesh and corrugated plastic etc. from the 'stone throwers' and 'stereo thieves' thus resulting in when the Cartics were finally withdrawn, they were replaced with fully enclosed units, which from the outside, the observer would have no idea of what was contained within.

The Carflats in the pictures were converted coach chassis. These were the mainstay of Motorail as they were easy to load/unload. Cartic 4s were tried but were inconvenient. Eventually Motorail utilised converted coaches like this...

I have a thing about Motorail in the Carflat days. I think it's 8) Papa Vin said they looked at using it once in the pre M5 early 70's, to go from Hull down to the West country, but it was too expensive...

Hey, that bit has just reminded me of something... when my dad bought his Montego new in '86 it had a factory non-cassette radio. After a few weeks this was replaced with a Ford-branded rad/cass super-deluxe affair. Ten years later or so, I found said same unit in the garage and fitted it into the Skoda Estelle I had as a first car. Recent conversations with father_pog about this resulted in the revelation that he's bought it from a local yourth well known as a bit of a rapscallion - said lad would rob head units from brand new ford motors whilst they were on the trains being moved about... and that a couple of months after my dad buying the stereo (for £10 or so) the boy had been killed when he fell off the wagons whilst carrying out his crimes.... :?
