1986 Toyota Corolla Auto

So, you know how that Punto I have is really economical, reliable and sensible? Well obviously the only sensible course of action ia to put that up for sale and buy a 27 year old automatic to take its place. Have a crap photo:

69k on the clock with some history and the usual old giffer scrapes. Starts and drives fine, although it is a bit smoky and some toe rage tried to hotwire it, so the bit of outer window guide trim and lower steering column shroud are missing (long shot but anyone know where I can get some?) Best of all was that it only cost me £250 tax and tested - especially as he's forgotten to remove it from ebay and the bidding is currently at £325. Will get some better photos tomorrow, although I'll keep using the Punto until it's sold

Yum, well done. Cardiff plate, I think. Still see a surprising number of these around doing giffer duty so hopefully you'll not regret it :)

My mate had one until recently when the waterpump failed and probable HGF meant that it got sold to an unknown fate on RR, as she was preggers and nobody could be arsed fixing it as we are all too lazy and have too many other cars and not enough storage.

Great little engines on these. Well nippy for a 1.3. I think you will enjoy it, although I have no experience of the slushboxes on these. I am sure that will take out what fun there was in driving it.

I spotted this tonight! I was out walking the dog and saw its nose poking round the corner. So I walked in to take a closer look and then saw the Yugo so realised it must be yours! Looks shite!

A mate of mine had a manual one of these years ago. The most memorable thing about it was that it had no rev limiter, and would pull an indicated 72 in second before the valves started to bounce. :D

I like to think I'm doing a good job of devaluing property prices on those lovely new flats next to me. Landlady doesn't know I'm now taking up three parking spaces.......

There's a couple of ads on ebay for AE82 Corolla GT's being broken. I'm 90% sure the steering cowling is the same (although colour may not be).

Thats the absolute spit of one I used to see in Bath about five years ago, might even be the same one which would be nice seeing as that looks equally as clean! Aside from the wee problems here and there looks like you managed to stretch your £250 pretty well

Didn't it get marketed as a liftback? I might start saying that to everyone since it sounds more sophisticated

/\ I agree

Toyota part number is the same except the colour code (last 2 optional digits)

AE82GT only came in black plastic interior bits whereas GLs, XLs etc., were different colours.

My EE80 is brown plastic, to go with the metallic beige exterior and light brown velour 8)

Yours is the big brother of mine but as an '86 model year should share the same 12 valve 2EL code 1.3 engine and auto box.

The earlier 1.3 cars had the old 8 valve 2AL code engine.

I've had it nearly 4 years now, put 30,000 miles on it and it refuses to die

^ I love those Corolla's, I was intending to get one but bought my N13 Sunny instead (it looks quite similar).

The wonderfully shite brown plastic interior did infiltrate the GT as well. The white ones up to 86 had a brown interior (used to have one). I think the green ones and gold ones did too, it was truly awful :-)

Sorry to hijack the thread a little, but you don't know of a 3dr black front bumper anywhere do you? I need one for my current GT.

And back on topic, yes, they were indeed marketed as a 'liftback'. Truly one of the ugliest rear end treatments of any car I can think of :D Good luck with it, should just keep going no matter what you throw at it whilst it dissolves around you

My Granddad had the 3 door when I was a kid - it was either the same colour as mine (which is actually green) or a metallic blue

Anyone know if the front doors are the same on the saloon and liftback models?

Always liked that generation Corolla (and the one after it - 1987-92 shape). The 'C' decal on the steering wheel used to intrigue me. Was it better than having 'Toyota' emblazoned on it?

Here's one my sister and her then hubby used to own:

Her ex hubby resprayed the bumpers to give it that '1990s' feel.

I like how these look, but they really should've put the number plate in a bumper recess and smoothed the liftback out properly, then it'd be a really nice looking rear to match the front. Shame I don't get on with Toyotas else one of these would be a good Maestro replacement for me, I reckon.

I think this version is a bit ugly looking:

But back in the 80's, the full width lights were the dogs bollocks!

I'm sure a friend of mine had an "Executive" trim version of this model back in the day.

Update time you say?

Well I bought these rather smashing Watanabe wheels for it, which although it's true they are gold, since they are oh my god JDM yo retro, I like. Was considering doing an AE 86 style strip but that looked like too much effort, so I just painted the bottom half matt black. I also put some sitckers on to increase horsepower and my chance with the ladies. Now I just need to find someone who makes springs for it and I'm done

Other than a new alternator it's running surprisingly well, with an auto choke that actually works. Only about a month until Japfest, and after that I'll probably look at getting something new whilst the Yugo goes back on the road

Could never get on with the rear ends of these, they are hideous.

I saw one in Thailand lowered and what have you in orange, and it looked amazing. Yours on the watanabe's looks amazing also.

Yup, Liftback is correct :)

Slightly late, but I found some lowering springs in time for Japfest. Oddly the back barely changed at all, although you can see the difference on the front. Best thing is that the ride hasn't changed, and I haven't managed to scrape it on anything. Also fitted the Datsun1200 wing mirrors. Aside from the ongoing search of the missing parts, I'd say that's pretty much it and will likely put it up for sale soon
