This update is another 'Look at Life'. It's one I screen grabbed before I leant them to my mate.

 

'A load of pheasants' is the last film on the DVD. Dated September 1969, this episode covers the increasing number of TIR lorries travelling between the UK and mainland europe.

 

The film follows a wagon loaded with 6,000 brace of pheasants from Norfolk to Milan.

One of the drivers rings the UK to see if there is a backload - there is, tomato puree from (I think the voiceover said) Salerno. So that's were they set off to.

Brilliant stuff Vin! I’m not sure how those films portray Norfolk though, suitable only as the starting place for long trips with lots of birds? Possibly reinforcing this stereotype, I went to my local auctions last night to find the usual tat viewing cancelled in favour of a poultry show and sale...

I've just come back from Switzerland where I was amazed to still see some of these:

 

Still plying their trade day in day out... although they'll be gone by the end of next year if the posters about new trams coming in are anything to go by.

 

Those old Fiat trucks still seem to be going well in Libya, going by the recent events there there seemed to be a healthy population still bimbling along.

Singleton's Pluck . I have no fuggin idea why it is also called Laughterhouse. Bizarre. But then to read the following part of the review on amazon of 'Dave from Glasgow' - First saw this in the eighties and my VHS copy has been viewed over and over again every Christmas. It's become part of the annual ritual of things I have to watch. I'm so pleased it has finally been released on DVD - what took them so long! No wonder it is in the Forgotten Classics Collection, though to me it will always be "Singleton's Pluck". I am pleased I am not alone

'The scene from Melbury House' is one of my favourite BTF films. Dated 1972, it was used as a training exercise for apprentice camera operators. Melbury House was were the BTF had their headquarters. The BTF used surplus 'roll end' lengths of film to record the daily lives of their neighbours. The apprentices were able to put together a fifteen minute film showing daily life over a 12 month period.

 

There is no commentary, just a soundtrack by Vaughan Williams. It is a film I can watch over and over again, as I find it fascinating. I have screengrabbed all the relevant autoshite, but I have also grabbed non-shite related scenes as they are just too good to not include.

 

 

 

 

 

I love the faces drawn in the snow on the backs of the cars. Nothing changes.

 

 

 

 

 

This is from a lovely bit of the film were a woman returns to an Anglia van to find a parking ticket. The street sweeper then saunters over and has a chinwag about it.

A new year and a new update.

 

This is Law & Order from 1978. Filmed in 1977, GF Newman's Law & Order is a series of four interconnected 80min episodes titled, the Detective's tale, the villain's tale, the brief's tale and lastly the prisoner's tale. The DVD has the tagline - Detective, criminal, lawyer. who should be the prisoner???

 

This is an excellent drama series. It was controversial for it's day. Pyall, like Regan in the Sweeney, is also a Flying Squad detective, but it's as far removed from the Sweeney as you can get. As a result, it was never repeated until recently and was never allowed to be shown abroad.

You'll have to excuse this little bundle of what may appear to be the same pic...Within about 30 seconds of screen time there is an Opel, Simca van, and a Japanese pick-up. I don't know what the pick-up is, so I did a few grabs to try and catch it....

I have just checked "how many left" and there are only ten Moskvitch left in total. Pick-up was not listed so if there are any left it would be in the information missing catagory where there are four vehicles.

As there is curently a lot of love for truck shite at the moment, I think this update will be apt...

 

'They take the High Road' is a BFI film dated 1960. It's a film essentially about BRS - British Transport Services, and what it can, and does, for the country.

 

It uses the story of 4 men living at Killin station for 2 years. Everyday they do two 22 mile return trips each, carrying 7.5 tonnes of bagged cement to a construction site where the dam for a Hydro-Electric plant is being constructed.

 

You'd need arms of steel and I certainly don't envy them. Essentially driving a garden shed up and down a mountain twice a day in all weathers...

I've got my 'Look at life' DVD back...it's been out on loan

 

Titled 'Vintage Models' this episode is dated June 1963. It's a look at the Vintage and Veteran car scene. It's odd seeing these 'old timers' running alongside everyday cars that are now classics themselves....
