distasteful? Nah,to put it simply, alot of people from the exploring world hate our guts! Without wanting to sound too arrogant about it all, we run the best exploring community and it makes people who, for whatever reason, have fallen out of favour with it pretty jealous. Unfortunately for us that puts us in the firing line of one of the most 'cut throat', competitive and politically charged hobbies there is. Can you believe for example that the guy who took the picture of us at court (which incidentally didn't even get as far as the court room it was such a ludicrous charge) drove there all the way from Newcastle to Forfar just for that?? why?? The stuff posted on those websites is a mixture of lies and twisted truths, i dont even bother reading them anymore its all so hippo-critical and speculative. The only good thing about it is that in reality it has had zero effect on anything. We still have the biggest website and still go out exploring with a great bunch of people and find really amazing things which we share with the world where possible. My life could honestly not really be much better!

(ps. i do still have cars just too busy to post much about them anymore!)

So, just for the record and indeed to actually set it straight, you are saying you have not stolen anything, put stuff in your pocket for eBay or otherwise taken anything whatsoever that didn't belong to you?

I'm not saying you did (or didn't) by the way but it'd probably help clear your internet name so to speak.

Posted

Im a pretty honest guy but i cant claim to be totally clear of ever taking anything ever, if anyone ever claimed that i certainly wouldn't trust them!!

My level of 'theft' doesn't stretch further then pulling an interesting old pop bottle or sweet wrapper from under the seats of a derelict theatre or something along those lines. Theft of litter i guess! What i certainly dont do is go places on some kind of 'looting spree' to get things to sell on ebay! Its just fucking stupid. Not only would it get me in jail pretty quick it also makes no sense. Why would i go around posting all these photos on-line proving i was there incriminating myself??

What they seem keen to ignore is that you can actually get stuff by ASKING or BUYING or that we may have other hobbies or businesses that bring us into contact with old toot such as hey , owning old cars for example!!

Anyway i dont have time to be doing any more 'clearing of my internet name' tonight, you will have to make your own mind up.

Ive thought long and hard about replying, because I dont want to get into any sort of argument.

28DL is a very good website, I pop in when I have time because I like the photography and I like the subject matter.

My own UrbEx is not on a par with the reports so I dont post reports, and therein lies my criticism - the site is cliquey (but then what forum isnt). A noobie posts a mediocre report and gets ripped to shreds rather than given useful pointers (just what I have seen).

So my trooping round an old hospital or mill with a Nokia camera phone or an old 3.1MP Sony Cybershit and not being very arty with the pics isnt going to win me any positive comments.

Ive done a few sites and possibly seen a few areas that would be difficult for many UrbExers to get to mainly because I have the right ID's to be able to gain entry into NHS and Home Office establishments. Lytham Hospital was also quite interesting (though working there in the 80's and knowing a few staff probably helped with getting access there) as was Devonshire Rd hospital and Whitegate Drive hospital and DDU (Blenheim House) . But I digress - I only say this so that you know Im interested in UrbEx and not just having a pop from the classic car side.

Its your site, so you run it how you want, but the way its run and the comments many starting out receive are possibly why as you say a lot of people hate 28DL's guts. With regards to sites being plundered, well thats going to happen whenever something goes into the public arena where anything of value is seen to be "ripe for the picking". Not merely by people who run the site but by anyone with access to the internet.

I mean how many banger racers read this forum or the Rust in Peace pages of Practically Brassic looking for a car to acquire to race?

Only my view and I expect many to disagree.

I was gutted about all of this, I followed a lot of your builds on retrorides, and I was quite happy to assume it was internet bollocks were it not for this comment, by you on your own flickr:

The 'urbex mantra' is a load of toss as far as im concerned. Loads of people preach it but no one ive ever met follows it. I try to get as much stuff saved as possible but its not easy. The main things that get in the way are A. The Law B. The Laziness/Indifference of the people who are responsible for these places and C. The size of my house..

Sorry, but that is your own words and pretty hard to defend.

eh?? its true, the urbex mantra is a load of toss, as in, no one follows it! People do take stuff and do break in and do tresspass on railways and powerstations and all that other illegal stuff. Its not a 28DLthing at all, thats the point! Its a fact of all exploring and explorers, there no urbex police out there so its impossible to stop totally. There's not many totally innocent parties in this game im afraid, not many total pikeys either but even so how that makes me the villain ive no idea.

Also i do try and get stuff saved as much as i can! Ive sort permission to save 100s of things, many successfully. Like i say they ignore this fact! One of the Mods on 28DL is a member of an industrial history society in Glasgow whos 'almost' sole purpose is to save old relics from destruction. The law gets in the way as we cant just go take things and the size of my house (well attually i only have a room soley to my name) is a pretty big factor as its full of stuff, old bottles, car bits and everything. Museums are full!

You see what i mean now? they post something which is taken totally out of context and try and make it fit their argument. People don't have clue what goes on and get the wrong end of the stick and jump on the bandwagon.

You may well be right about Prat Classics but can't see that its a problem on here you know who the racers are (if you don't want anything to do with us) and if someone just wants shot of an end of life hack where's the harm?

Posted

To be fair, I don't see anything wrong in 'saving' stuff from old factories/industrial sites etc, rather that than see it crushed by the demolition team and never seen again.

Nicking some poor old fellas cars is frickin ridiculous though.

Is Pyestock still do-able Slater? Had some great explores there back in 07 before I moved north.

A few years ago I travelled up top the north of Scotland to explore an abandoned aircraft scrapyard. It had been pretty much cleared but there was stacks of lovely items to keep an aeroperv like me interested, stuff from Shackletons, Buccaneers, Nimrods and even a few wartime relics like a Wellington tail wheel. It wasn't fenced off and the locals would walk in and take whatever they wanted- nobody cared as it was just lying about, abandoned. I spotted a propeller hub from a Short Sunderland under a load of scrap, I was tempted to nick it but instead tracked down the yard owner and approached him directly. I was told I couldn't buy it and was officially banned from the site!

I have since found out someone has stolen the Sunderland prop hub. I have to say i was tempted to just pikey it away at the time and knowing that someone else has just walked off with it makes me a bit annoyed for having a conscience about these things but there you go. Theft is theft!

I joined 28DL.

I trudged around a semi derelict warehouse and got into the boarded up warehouse next door to the one I was renting at the time. I took some photos on my camera phone. I got ripped a new arsehole because:

1. I didn't have a £2k DSLR

2. It wasn't HDR processed

3. OMFG you peasant you used a camera phone, the EXIF data says so and you're therefore scum who should be ignored.

There has been some epic content from 28DL in the past but I can't say their reputation is undeserved from personal experience.

No No, I was using the fact that 28DL and this place are open fora where anyone registered or not can read and see details that are posted up, and may be able to work out where that item(s) is. Much the same way that anyone can waltz into WHS and look at rust in peace and see something "abandoned" that tickles their fancy.

Im not going down the banger argument route, as apart from theft I have no issues at all with cars being obtained legitimately and raced whether they are good, bad or ugly.

Yeh, i feel that vibe. Ive seen so much go to waste via demolition, arson, vadalism or theft for scrap it makes me physically sick to think of some of the stuff ive seen lost.

For those of you who have had bad experiences with 28DL i am sorry. The problem is the site isnt really for 'casual' explorers. Its for very dedicated explorers who eat, live, sleep and breath exploring to share their finds and stories. Sorry but thats the way it is, its our place, for us. The fact that people can come on and view where we have been is only really a secondary concern to us. In fact many of the other exploring groups out there wont let you see what they are up to at all let alone allow you to join up and have a go at contributing yourself.. Everyone is given a chance but it is made clear when you sign up that you must meet a certain standard to be accepted. I know that rather 'elitist' of us but we dont want a forum full of camera phone shots of old car dealerships or abandoned orchards! (by the way HDR is far from compulsory, it is almost banned! Camera phone pictures showing interesting things will be tolerated too, the emphasis is on interesting tho.)

In answer to some of the other issues you mention, all new member accounts will be deleted after a certain period of inactivity, you have not been 'banned' very very few people get banned and you only get an earful if you fail to follow the rules and guidelines that are stated several times when you join. Id rather there were no hard feelings over it and hope you still enjoy reading about places on there.

Our rep as being harsh is more than deserved but not this whole 'theft' bollocks

(yep pyestock still there and still amazing)

To be fair, derelict warehouses are ten a penny and usually extremely boring.

28DL still exists mainly as a location fishing resource for the moderators because they're too lazy to do any research.

28DL have an excellent photoset of a derelict hat factory that's visible from the back of my house. They saved me the bother of breaking in and possibly getting arrested, whilst satisfying my curiosity as to what was in the building. Excellent work. No cars in it mind, so I won't bother posting a link.

Some of them seem a bit dim, mind. One posted pictures of an abandoned cinema in my area, at the same time as the self same photos appeared as a 'special photo report' in my local paper. With his name in the article. Oh, and mention of the fact that he's one of the paper's photographers. No harm done in that case, as he'd got the owner's permission to go in the cinema, but his other photosets on 28DL seem to suggest he's trespassed everywhere else he's photographed.

I never would and have never had to break in to any site, and civil trespass is not something you can be arrested for.

I've been a member on 28DL for quite a few years, never had any problem as a 'registered lurker'. Posted one possible explore for someone else to go and investigate as time and circumstances were against me.

I've never had any adverse dealings with any of the mods either, guess i've just been lucky and kept my head down.

I found the photo's posted of the old TVR factory a bit distressing mind, seeing all the moulds for the classic TVR's left out to degrade in the elements was sad. I'm sure someone will have rescued them by now.

I'll not pass comment on any of the alleged incidents as I wasn't there and therefore know nowt.

Love the photography, same on here too.

Seems that preserving old shite is something we have in common, long may it remain that way.

I'm going to get in trouble for this bit... I think Rooks is a hottie, Its my opinion and I'm sticking with it.
