Day van Daydreaming

Nights again.

I loath them. Handing out paracetamol to people because they are awake at 3am and think that because they are awake they have to make sure someone else is too. I mean FFS a Hotel 1 call for paracetamol... Anyway I try to occupy my time on nights otherwise I might go mad and find myself in a living hell populated by Ant and Dec on ITV3 at 4am.(my choice of TV channels is VERY limited)

This week I shall be mostly thinking about how to make a day van and what to put in it.

I dont need a camper van, i have a caravan for that, but quite like the idea of somewhere to sit and enjoy a brew up and sit down whilst out and about. You dont see day vans too much in this country, they seem to be an American thing, but surely its not that difficult to convert say a nice Bedford CF with some chairs a 12v fridge and a calor gas stove. Im actually thinking more along the lines of a Berlingo van, but with some multispace seating in the rear (pushed right back to the rear doors) with a kitchinette unit in the middle - so a van with single sliding rear door would be quite good for this sort of layout and could probably be had for not a lot of expense.

Shag pile carpet is of course a must, as is monster stereo and strobe lighting.....

Thoughts gentlemen?

I'll have to wait for morning to look at that - apparently the NHS think that eBay isnt a productive use of my time on the interweb (but Autotrader and Autoshite are!)

Toyota Space Cruiser! Perfect for what you need, and with a hint of Gerry Anderson in the styling too. (Tell me it doesn't remind you of a SHADO Mobile, I dare ya! ) Loads of grey-imports around at shite prices, OJC RWD engineering, luxury seating and trim. Le case, 'Astings, est solv-ed, wiz ze 'elp of my leetle grey cells. :D

A Rover P4 and Chic Murray?

Posted

I think you should go 1950s....

Gramaphone, tea set, wall paper ARM chairs, standard lamp, table cloth, doilies, ceramic flying ducks, primus stove, tea pot, pipe, paper, courdroy suit, cravat, slippers, doris with blue flower house coat and rollers in her hair.

You see, in a 50s day van, as a chap, you relax and read the paper whilst doris does all the work

Just turn the Micra into a day van. I'm pretty sure someone on Retro-Rides turned one into a tiny camper. Fit a pop-up roof and a big old soft chair and you're sorted. Or swap it for one of these...

Surely that's the Autoshite way?

One of these things should be reasonably priced now the novelty has worn off, just add brolly.

I think the crossing a Rover P4 with Arthur Fowler up there would lead to something not unlike an FX4, replace the worn out piss and sweat stained rear seat with a cut down Chesterfield, and with one of the fold down occasional seats reupholstered as a matching footstool, the level of comfort will be sublime, dark brown vynide to cover the interior trim for ambiance, fridge / coolbox and cooker in the nearside front and there should be plenty of space left for a cocktail cabinet to keep gin and a tumbler, glass shelf for snorting, and a Harold Wilson piperack.

Bedford Rascal?

Natch the shiters choice would be a hand painted Mk3 Transit with a non-existant chassis. Fill it full of cherry, set off for Blackpool and we'll all watch Granada Reports to see Lucky Meacock* rattling on about a smoke cloud on the M55.

I reckon an 806 / Synergie / Ulysse like mine would be perfect.

Sliding doors.

Big enough to be comfortable to sit in.

Small enough to go in multistory car parks and ordinary parking spaces.

Just take out the middle row of seats and sit in the rear most row. The eight seat ones have a big bench / sofa across the back.

Also you say you have a caravan. The 806 is a superb tow vehicle.

I'll just tell the wife she has to drive the Micra from now on then.....

True Fact - Every single VW T4 ever made is now a Day Van/Surf Bus/camper conversion so plenty to choose from if you like overpriced tarted up shite. :D

these are only for masochists. everything is CAN/VAN bus, 13 different ECUs, particulate filters and exploding cambelts.

The 806 is a far, far simpler and tougher beast. In terms of complexity it's about the same as a 306.

That Micra is fucking amazing. I would love that. I wonder if I could turn the Audi into one? That would be pretty fly.

Small.

Obscure.

Poorly proportioned.

Made from glassfibre.

Painted beige.

The most Autoshite of solutions, methinks.

Or perhaps Sir would consider these, from our Continental cousins?

TRU. I convert them and we can't find any to do. They look stacks better as panel vans so it kills me to cut windows in them.

Same goes for cutting the roof off them to put fibreglass pop tops on.

If you go to the total ldv forum you will find some very interesting stealth van conversions. Good choice of base vehicle cos itz a ShERPAz innit
