Removing private plate...HELP!!

Hi everyone. What my problem is i have a Golf Cabriolet which i intend to scrap or sell if anyone wants it cheap. It has a private plate on it which i want to remove BUT the tax and mot are well out. Is it possible to get the plate off without having to tax and test it again? The tax ran out an May and the test ran out in Jan. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

Its a 1993 Golf Avantguade Cabby 2.0. Runs and drives fine although the it needs a new gearlinkage as it wont engage reverse. If your interested i will email you some piccies.

Sorry. Needs to be MOTd.

I don't think it does actually, I'm pretty sure it goes on the tax and I think if it expired less than 12 months before, then you can transfer.

Pretty sure it's actually six months, so he's knackered again.

When I took YFR 716 off my Chrysler convertible in 2006, I'm sure the forms I had specified that the vehicle had to have current MoT and tax. It also had to be presented in the metal at a DVLA local office (which conveniently was across the road from where I was working) for inspection, to make sure the VIN numbers matched. Presumably presenting it on a trailer would be allowed, but there's little point if it's legal and running.

I understood it was 6 months too. But the number plate broker was only concerned that it was a 'continuous', meaning it went on SORN prior to the tax expiry. It was at about 8 months after the car left the road. I let them handle it no problems. Plate went on retention and sorted.

Plate sold after a long year on their books (it was a dateless with good letters) for 50% of their valuation. Which goes to show the state of the market.

Could you not get a screwdriver behind it to break the glue on the double sided tape? Maybe hammer a smaller socket over it?

Thanks for that FT,

My Dad worked for Dutton Forshaws in Blackpool, (Vicarage Lane) for a while, remember them having a showroom on Corporation Street and Kings Road in St Annes, retirement flats are there now if memory serves.

FR was originally a Blackpool combination; FY was Southport. I acquired 716 by accident, the previous owner simply left it on the car for me, so when I sold the car I kept the plate, and sold it later. I still have the actual plate I had on the front of the car.

Can you not re-MOT/tax it then you can get the plate off, cash the tax back and get a few extra quid for the car?
