The 'when did they become cheap?' thread.

Flitting round eBay recently I noticed stuff I expected to be a lot more expensive than it was. No saying I would/would not buy any of these by the way, just that they seem quite cheap to me compared to what they must have cost new...

Feel free to add your own.

*I've not included stuff like the Caymenne(sp?) and other 4x4s because I'd expect them to plummet in vlaue pretty sharpish.

I guess it's because of the massive increase in fuel and insurance costs? Even if you had one as a company car like many probably did, I guess it still cost a fortune if you exceeded allowed mileage or whatever.

Used to be a nice thing to have as a weekend toy but if a sunday drive is gonna cost £100 in fuel then it ain't worth it!

you can see it in lower end cars as well. Try and buy a relatively new car with a 1.4 engine at the moment - very over valued whereas you can get some cracking deals on big engined cars at the moment. There was a lad on here flogging an 850 awd the other day - can't see the ad - really fast car and I saw it was only up to abou £600 on ebay for an unusual 4x4 performance car that's very cheap. Another lad in Blackpool last week weighed in an XJ300 cos he couldn't give it away (missed out on it!) it was a low miler 1998 one - high spec too!!!

Cars are only worth what someone is prepared to pay for 'em.

I agree with the above. However, it is important to note that this is not a result of rising fuel prices, but merely one of poor maths skills. No shortage of people who are too stupid to realise that, say, a £3,000 difference between a car that's thrifty and one that isn't can still pay for an awful lot of fuel...Having said that, a 10 year old Porsche is too old to appeal to nouveaux riches and newbies yet probably too new to attract interest from the serious enthusiast.

I'm giving it up for the E39 M5. Prices of e34 M5's are now passing the E39 M5 in the way that M-cars always do.

Still, less than 6k gets you something you could use all the time but it'll still waste almost anything on the road. Prices are low because of the OMG instant VANOS death explosion and general high running cost. I'm seriously considering getting one just for a few months as it's just one of these cars I've always wanted.

Also this is the only sub 10k 996 Carrera 4 I've ever seen. It's also the worst one I've ever seen.

I'm wondering how low Jag XJDs will go (2003 model?) and when and if it's too long to park anywhere in London.

I met a guy that bought a top of the range Citroen C6 V6 diesel auto with 200bhp or whatever, leather, satnav etc etc. 1 year old. £14000, from a Citroen main dealer.

or 607 with the V6 diesel. mmmmm

^^^ 4 year old off lease C6's are being blocked at 7k reputedly. Tempting huh....

the interesting thing about used Citroens (at least the big ones) is that my impression is that they are bought by enthusiasts and so hopefully are well maintained.

used Peugeots on the other hand are bought by minicabbers and run into the ground

Only just superceded, and depreciation of £50k in four years

In fact all large-engined petrol Mercs seem ridiculously cheap, eg it would be hard to find a ten-year old example of the model just before the one above for more than 10k. They are ridiculously complex ( anyone for automatic rear headrests 8) ) but do seem to be more reliable than their diesel relatives. Snog, marry or avoid? :D

On my way home from work there are currently for sale

A Peugeot 806, looks a little tired but just £600.

A 1996 XJ6 Sport, 12 Months MoT £750.

A Citroën Berlingo, weird Scooby Doo stickers but £675.

All these seem cheap to me, perhaps I have no idea how much these things cost.

Those eras of Porsche look really pathetic, I think that shape is really awful. I can't tell the difference between the Boxster.

I was at the sales 'tother day with a mate looking for a cheap diesel shitbox.

A 1.4 03 plate Fester made £1800.

An 03 plate Jaguar S Type 3.0 - absolutely unmarked in JRG with leather - made £1750.

Early 996 Porsches are serious value now. Why have some old aircooled heap from 1903 when you can have one of these? Sure, there is always the spectre for engine issues but the aircooled cars weren't exactly issue free.
