Hi shiters, need advice ASAP!

Broke down last night on M1 in the 1973 Audi 100LS. Snapped fan belt. Car now stranded in Leicester and need to drive back to London by tomorrow. my Haynes manual is not with me though.

Would anyone know the details of the fanbelt I need to buy from say Halfords?

Muchos appreciated if anyone can assist!!

Cheers

have you tried calling GSF/Unipart with your reg no. or VIN? They can normally find the proper fitments. In fact, you can do that online on the Euro Crap Prats website, too.

RAC? They carry spares and some of variable sizes too, I'd bet they would have one or knock one up for you. Failing that does that old wives tale of women's tights as a temporary belt work?

found a US site that states an OE number of 88934306 for the 1973 Audi 'Fox' 1500 or 1600? and AC Delco part number: AC15370

I thin the Fox is an Audi 80 but would it be the same engine?

My Autodata old car book gives Audi 100 LS 72-76 as being 9,5 x 875mm so a QB875 or equivilent later cars have a 950mm

I think I have only once managed to obtain the correct fan belt by parts catalogue, and even then the other one of the pair was wrong. Is there any way you can measure it with string?

Many years ago I used to have a universal fan belt - a length of red rubbersised hollow tube with a connector on one end - the idea was you threaded it through and cut to size, clipped the ends together and it got you home.

It lasted over 20,000 miles!

And bugger me - as if by magic:-

Autodate isn't a parts catalogue its techical data used by the trade and spot on in my experience.

Decent quality cable ties make good temp fan belts as long as the alternator isn't charging flat out all the time so use with a well charged battery and keep electrical consumption to a minimum

I was going to suggest this, most (normal) petrol stations sell them unless they've decieded to do away with them and sell perfume or CDs or some other horse shit.

875x9.5 is the same as a BMW 318i M10 engine with no power steering , halfrauds had one when i needed one in a hurry

I was shown the trick with the tights many years ago, by a mechanic mate, who showed me on his Marina.

You need the heavier tights (higher denier number) in a long length, and twist them round and round to make a kinda 'rope'. Give them a good stretch while you're at it, it'll take some of the stretch out of the nylon, which will stop it flying off.

If the pulleys are particularly big, use two pairs as above, intertwined in opposition (so the gussets end up on opposite ends, like a disappointing scissor sisters... )

Now feed the 'rope' thro' the pulleys as per normal, and pull the ends up good'n'tight. Tie off, (reef knot will do) and make sure the knot's nice and compact, so it doesn't bounce too much.

It has to be said, this measure is very temporary; Leicester to London might be do-able. Best buy a multipack, so you can do it all again if/when your tights give out.

I used to carry a universal fanbelt in my van, when I worked in the trade: the ones I favoured were the thick red rubber tube type, but they had a little brass or stainless self-tapping stud to join the ends.
