You Know What I Said About 4 Cylinder Bikes?

Well how could I resist this? A Stunning 1983 Honda CB750 F2, bought cheaply on a whim and it turns out to be almost concours, runs and works beautifully but no MOT and tax, don't care, sounds great, looks amazing! I reckon I will hate riding it though!

I'm not a huge fan of that era of Japanese bikes, but it looks like a minter!

How cheap is cheap? I promise I won't curse you

Had one for many years- killed it climbing the loose lava road up Vesuvius. Rattled like a diesel after that.

Competent but anodine. Yours looks nice.

Hey Torsten, I'll buy it off you !! just ride it down to Dorset next month, and I promise not to ride it up bloody Vesuvius.

I use the cable-car instead ( Nigel  )

How much you want for it ??? - now steady on, you see a prophet already .......

Looks in great shape - from memory, this era of Honda had dubious camshaft problems - make sure all is well in that department.

I bought a Honda CBX550F-F2 back in the early 90's for 100 quid or therabouts - it developed the camshaft/top end issue within 10 miles of picking the bike up...

Just chucked out a genuine Honda workshop manual for one of them! Still have all the specialist tools though. Used to work in the workshops of a Honda dealership and never heard of camshaft problems with them. The one I had was a reliable old Hector even with all the tweaks done to it.

Ooh I'm liking that, muchly.

I've never been big on 'bikes in fact I positively hated everything about them and the cunts whom ride them like twats until ten days ago when I deceided I needed a motorbike, so bought one, booked CBT etc so it looks like I'm becoming a even bigger cunt than before and I didn't think that was possible, I can see my shite taste in most things extending to motorbikes so your new steed gets my seed. :D

Thought I better look this one up on Google - I avoided Hondas for years due to the bad rep they had in the early 80's

My uncles got a cb900f2 (near enough exactly the same as the 750) and from what i remember, the cam chains had a habbit of chewing their way through the cam chain tunnel back in't day

Saying that you'll 'probably' be fine

A very common modification is to fit a double disc set-up from something like the later CB750K (double-overhead cam) model. There were plenty of front ends around because the DOHC bike used to eat pistons and camchains.

The 77-78 F2's were notorious for top spring retainer failure, causing severe damage.

Looks like it might have been the earlier models that were a problem actually?

If this bike is not to your liking I think you should put it up here for sale first

I only paid £500 for it, it really is a bargain. I know I could turn a quick profit on it but having had a BIG chat with myself I've decided to put a cover over it and keep it nice & warm...it ain't going nowhere, except for the MOT station!

Torsten, in my book, you're a fucking legend.

How you find the room for all these fantastic vehicles, I don't know.

Oooh, that's another honey, Torsten. Verrr nice.

From memory, the problem with the camchains was due to the oil-pressurised tensioner. If the oil was below par, the tensioner didn't put enough force onto the long run of the main chain (now I'm not sure if those were the 1 or 2 chain type), allowing it to rattle about enough to chew the chain tunnel.

If it's had oil changes as required, it won't be an issue. If it hasn't, it won't only be the tensioner acting up!

Somehow, that one doesn't look like the typical neglect case...

Motorbikes need melting down into cars.

^Shall I mark you down for a Peel P50, or a Caterham 'Blade, sir?

Good idea. But if you want to punt on the BMW R80, shout here first

It was the earlier 750/4 Hondas that had the cam chain rep from memory though I'm sure these could munch them too. Fine looking machine though and it doesn't neccessarily follow that your's will self destruct. The 900 version was a nice old bus but quite a few were put off because of insurance costs due to them being 902cc and therefore putting them into the next group up.

The R80 has the tank and front mudguard away for painting at the moment, I can't see that being up for sale for a while, loving it far too much!E

Always fancied the CB900 as a youth but European stuff took my fancy more!

anything starting vf usually had the chocolate cam thing going on too

ps thanks leonard :D

I worked on a few of them when I ran a motorcycle workshop, never knew them to need anything more than routine servicing, including carb' balancing. Funnily enough, I've still got the cam tools and shims too (and kawasaki one's).

Might be an idea to change the fork oil, most owner's tend to overlook that.

Fitting a 20w quartz halogen side light bulb was popular.

^Maybe you can put me out of my misery then! Do the DOHC CB's have the long single camchain, or the one chain up to the (iirc) exhaust cam, then the second chain over to the other? It's been bugging me, since the post I made above. I'm not even sure I haven't got Hondas and something else mixed up. Or maybe I'm just talking rubbish...

I had no interest in bikes until 30 minutes ago, now I'm on the MCN website looking at them and have already applied for the free 1 hour trial (via http://www.geton.co.uk)!

When my handsome face is squished all over the Hogs Back, it's going to be this forum's fault - I hope you're pleased with yourselves.

Did you try the 'Inner Rider' test? Apparently, I'm a 'Swift Mover' . Or so I've been told.
