I've got the How It Works book somewhere. Useful reference book if ever there was one. Up there with the AA Book of the Car 1977.

Jesus!! When you all were going on about Tootles The Taxi, I didn't have a clue

But seeing those drawings brings it all back

I remember the lot, especially the Sweeper - ready to soak the doggie and kids :D

Full marks for the scans! I had this book as a kid, when it must have been 20 years out of date anyway. I've been reading it to my own kids but there's a few issues - some of the stuff just doesn't exist anymore.

"Daddy, what's a coal lorry?"

"It's a lorry that delivers the coal to people's houses"

"What's coal?"

"Ah"

If you're quick when watching The Ladykillers you can spot Ronnie the Railway Dray hauling cases around Kings Cross

I do find those pictures very evocative of a 'perfect' world in a time gone by.

Litter free streets, neatly trimmed hedges, everyone dressed smartly... and polite and smiling. Residential roads that weren't crammed with cars....the houses actually had a front garden with a nice lawn and flowers... with maybe a Ford Anglia or Standard Ten parked behind green, wooden garage doors. Curtains fluttering in a sunny open window. People patiently waiting their turn outside a bright red phonebox.

A bit 'Stepford' I know, but its what I seem to remember as a little kid.

Cripes, I recall 'Tootles the Taxi' from my yoof from the early 1980s. The pics from that Ladybird book seem to date to the 1950s.

Ditto, except it was the early 90s for me! I guess these would be 20p bootsale junk back then, I'm now about to bid on loads of these on ebay to relive my youth. Pretty sure they wont be so cheap anymore....

I'd forgotten about Tootles The Taxi as well. As the others have said it would have been 30 years old when I had it. A lot of the vehicles in it are based on contemporary Dinky Toys I think.

Woah! Remember that too! Engrained on the mind.

That will be Avatar.

Unfortunately the "Car Makers" book was never finished as the workforce went on strike halfway through.
