What can you say about this beauty? At first I thought it was a parts van for a John Deere dealer....

 

The owner even has a John Deere model number on the tailgate - 6920. But as you can see, a 6920 bears little resemblance to a Corolla:

 

 

 

Looks like someone got a little too excited and sullied the bodywork!

I spotted two builders vans today sporting modern euro plates with the Serck font, so someone local is definitely knocking them out. Shouldn't be too hard to find as there are only a handful of places around here making metal plates. Stay tuned...

Yeah, it would have come from the dealership as a van alright.

 

Like the Xsara van, it would probably have been converted by the importer.

 

I always preferred the UK-style Xsara van myself. At least it was more practical and didn't look like a van...

 

 

The rules about van coversions are fairly lax. You can take any hatchback or estate, rip out the rear seats and seatbelts, weld up the mounting holes and take it down to the local Revenue office to have it re-classified as a van. Road tax is dirt cheap then, but the downside is that commercial vehicles need to be tested every year instead of every two years for cars.

I did spot this Renner 11 GTL outside the local dealers yesterday though, sitting with a bunch of other down-at-heel motors. Probably destined to be turned into dodgy Chinese spanners in the near future.

I would definitely buy a pair of UK spec reflective plates, just as long as they weren't 500 Euro or something stupid.

'91 BX TZD in an Aldi carpark no less. Originally from Devon judging by the dealer sticker on the back.

 

Only the second time I've seen this shade of blue (EDF blue) on a BX - the other was my 4x4...

Not sure when production actually ceased; I know the R4 carried on going long after RHD imports stopped.

I had a quick look on wikipedia - looks like they made them until 96 alright...

The model was starting to show its age by 1990 , when it was effectively replaced by the more modern and better-built Clio, which was an instant sales success across Europe. Production of the R5 was transferred to the Revoz factory in Slovenia when the Clio was launched, and it remained on sale as a budget choice called the Campus until the car's 24-year production run finally came to an end in 1996.

Henry was born in the 1860s and the rest is history.
