I had a chap fly over to pick up an Outback from Belfast yesterday. On our way to the garage from the airport we got speaking about old shite, he told me he has a suzuki X90 but with a back on it, cant picture it but will reserch it. Anyway, he has tucked in his garage a 1 owner 82 Lancia HPE, the fastback one, in black, with 40 odd k. His wife is pestering himto get rid, so i have expresed my interest. What are they like? anyone got one?

It is said that you can't be a true car enthusiast unless you've owned an Alfa, I would suggest that owning, maintaining and regularly driving a Lancia, especially a malaise era machine like the HPE, propels you into the league of automotive demi-god.

I ran a thema turbo, Dedra , and a Delta 1.3 for a while, they were all shite and loved every minute of them. :) the Hpe is a wee bit before my time, I remember being offered a supercharged one once, and buying an XM instead.

I've 4 of these. An automatic, a volumex and an 'ordinary' manual (-plus a saloon yet to collect from the dungeon.)

if its not rusty- I rate them very highly. Good Fiat twin cam, pretty frugal (excapt volumex!) and quite fast -by 80's standards.

Metal munchers are the problem -beginnig to end. Usual places- plus rear suspension mounts. if they're Ok there, the inner wings are OK and the sills are kosher- go for it.

Marvellous

well, yes my thoughts too, but he was adamant it wasnt, it sounds to me like somekind of jap import, he knew his stuff enough not to make that mistake im sure, i have done a google search, but seen nothing. I wil sk for a picture along with some of the Lancia.

I had a late 1600 HPE, and hated it to be honest. Love Lancia's and have had Delta's and Dedra's but the HPE seemed rather unsporty, slow and hard on fuel- just didn't get on with it at all.. The headlamps were nearly impossible to find, and fell to pieces, so I made E30 projector lamps fit, they were great!

I have had two, one a complete shiterbox, bloe 2 ltr, still i loved it. Then i had the beast that was a loumex, immaculate condition, fabulous car while it worked, two many electrical niggles, went like shite of a stick!

They look ever so excellent. Good stuff.

When I was a pup, my local Ford Dealer (Malcolm Waite in Sandwich) also held a Lancia franchise and their forecourt was always chock-full of new and nearly new HPEs, Beta Coupes, Trevis and Deltas in the early-mid 1980s. I'm not sure who actually bought them, though, as said forecourt was the only place where I really saw them locally. Perhaps Lancia themselves took them back?

+1 on Nigel's third paragraph

Go to the car, ignore the rest of it, lift the rear deck, pull all that carpet out of the way, and what do you see top-to-bottom on the suspension turrets? Prod that insulation felt - well. Then go from there. My second Beta had to have an entire turret replaced.

Otherwise they're great, but flimsy on the fittings. If the engine struggles past 4000rpm, it's tired - an '82 will be IE. They corner flat, but lack a bit in the throwabout department. Mine was on Monroes with uprated springs and so was a tad better.

Don't expect to jump in after a few weeks rest and expect Mr Veglia, Mr SIEM and Mr Bosch to be happy and work properly straight off. But that's part of the fun about NOT driving an X-90

Well, the pictures have arrived via e mail, and it looks ace! I watiing to see how much he wants for it now......

Has anyone else noticed how from certain angles the rear quater and bumper are very similar to an xjs? or is it just me

I loved my HPE. It was a 2 litre IE on a Y plate, with PAS. One of the best-handling front drive cars I've ever driven. It wasn't too bad for rot as HPEs go, but it was starting to go quite badly around the sunroof, which I understand is a common thing for HPEs thus equipped. It also overheated due to a tired water pump, but that wasn't really the car's fault.

How do I get the pics from email to here? i am totaly useless at all this, and anything remotely technical causes me to shut down, so nice and simple please. ;)

well i must be a right thick twat then! I cant work it out, how do i take the pictures from an email and get them on my computer and then get them on here, i did set up a photo bucket account when i first joined here, but cant really understand how it works, it can't be that hard, there are far thicker folk than me out there that manage fine.

You need to save them to your computer (that depends on your mail programme but if Outlook then right click and save as.) Then log on to Photobucket and upload them there. Then you can get the link from photobucket. Pm if you need more :)

Let's see if we can help you... If you can print this to help you, so much the better.

First, open the photo from your email. Right-click on it; it should bring up a list of choices, one of which will say something like "Save As" which is the one you want. Left-click that and you'll get a box with destinations available in your computer. You want a file called "My Pictures" or something extremely similar. There should be a box for a title (I suggest typing in something like HPE Rear View for example) and another for file type, probably with a little arrow. If you click on that arrow you should be able to find an option called JPEG or possibly jpg. Either of these will do, click it, and click Save.

OK, now you should have the photo in your computer. Stage One accomplished!

Next, you need an account with a photo-sharing site like Flickr or Fotki, or some such. These are pretty easy to use and will guide you through adding photos to your albums. When you have an album of pics, you will be able to open each photo in turn. To add them here it's advisable to have two tabs up: one for Autoshite and one for your photo album (not the "My Pictures" album, I mean the Flickr/Fotki album). In the topic you want to add them to, click "Reply" which you already know how to use. Above the text box there is a button marked Img. Click that and it brings up this: with the cursor flashing in the middle. Now go to your album and bring up the photo you want. Right-click it and again you will get a menu, the item you want is "View Image Info" which you left-click. A box, or possibly even a new screen, will appear in which the image address should be highlighted. Right-click on that and left-click Copy in the little menu that appears. Now come back to Autoshite and make sure your cursor is still between the two Img blocks; and in the Edit menu click Paste. You should now have a pic of your Lancia in this thread.

Good luck!

(Edit: I just spotted that you have a Photobucket account, that's fine, should do what you need as the two I mentioned.)

Get the pics out of your email account an onto your computer.

Upload them from your computer to Photobucket or whatever.

Photobucket will then give you a link/web address for each one.

You use that on here in your post between a pair of tags and the pics will be visible.

If theyre not visible, one of us will look at what you have posted and fix it/tell you whats wrong/take the piss.

That loooks class in a glass. Bearing that in mind, and the fact that its in ireland, I'm gonna suggest the asking price will be €20000000000.
