Discovered an old Halfords catalogue from 1987, so scanned a few pages... Enjoy!

Good stuff! *thumbs-up*

Mirado wheel-trims are a perfect shitey period mod, especially if you colour-code them to your car's bodywork or you own a Lada Riva or an FSO 125P. They seem to all reside on twin-axle caravans nowadays, though.

That white Cortina looks pretty stunning with that body kit and wheels. I think Ford offered a similar kit as part of its RS Accessories range at some point :)

I used to real these and wish my dad could put these cool accessories on our cars. Looking back they look whack dont they?

Posted

Whatever happened to trims looking like trims? It's a right task trying to find OEM-ish ones for 90s motors.

Awesome, thanks for sharing that! The mk.3 Cortina and mk.2 Escort look awful, though I do like the Metro kit. Any more pages?

I miss the days that Halfords in Clacton (between Safeways and Bejam) used to have a rack of recaro seats. I was 6 in '87 and my Dad and I used to go in there just for a nose. I've not been in a branch for ages now, put off by the bright green Citroen Saxos lined up outside and the way that all the budget head units have the bass turned up so far the music sounds like it's being played through a cardboard tube underwater.

The side skirts on the Mark 3 were probably structural!

Mirado wheels trims! I'd forgotten about them!

I fitted a Moss alarm like that to my MK2 cav after some scumbag put a rear quaterlight through and nicked my cassettes...

Heh, I must have scrapped about 10 Cortinas with those body kits. I have a pathological dislike for such things. Cortinas look great without 'em, why ruin 'em by nailing a load of Richard Grant's evil fibreglass visions to 'em? Same with Capris.

The Mk3 Cortina looks a particually bizarre choice for a bodykit - chrome and fibreglass!

And are those "Wolfrace Sonic" wheels on the Mk2 Escort a ripoff of Metro rims?

Pete,

I have a full kit for the SD1, even down to the cossie whaletail

What do you think....?

Don't say that, Bren. That's a crime against all that is good about SD1s. Ye gads, no! They look bloody awful with kits.

Maybe they're supposed to be a rip-off of Capri 2.8 rims but they look as if they have a fwd offset- definitely a major step down from the "dartboards" they would no doubt displace.

Slightly off topic I suppose, but I saw a new low in shite halfords-style nail-on tat today. It was a sort of red scrolling LED display in the rear window of a car, a smaller version of the sort that they used to have in council swimming pool ticket offices saying something like "Thursday 2pm Aquagym *** !!! @@@". This one was only about 2" by 8" in size so the lad had it in the bottom corner of his rear window.

This is such a shit accessory that as far as I can tell it hasn't even made it onto ebay yet.

The lad had it on the back of a 3-yr old Focus ST. His scrolling message: "FORD FOCUS ST2"

The f**king mind boggles :roll::roll::roll::roll::roll:

Cheer up Bollox, that's a right idea if used properly! Have it broadcasting a load of figures like the Dow Jones news ticker, but here's the twist - change the figures so it looks like there's been a severe stock market crash (proper 1929 Wall Street Crash type thing), then drive around in some swanky business district and watch men in pinstripe suits go absolutely mental and resort to selling their possessions in the street.

Great catalogue 8)

Anyone else notice the reverse vampire Ford badge on the cover?

Nice find! My Uncle had colour coded Mirado wheel trims on his wuite Lada Riva estate. I always thought they were called 'Micardo', because of the style of the script. I see your 'Optilux' Avatar too. I had a catalogue for that stuff somewhere. I got it at a motorshow or something.

Took me a while. I reckon I need to get myself to the 1980's equivalent of Specsavers!

Aah, the days when you could just get away with bodging a spoiler on the front of your car with self-tappers. I've occasionally had a hankering for that look, on something like a Mk2 Cav. Cruise round playing nothing newer than about '91 on me tape deck.

Did you ever find it was allergic to water? I valeted cars for a living in the early 90's, and buggered up a couple of those while steam cleaning the engine bay. The only other problematic ones were Piranhas, but they were usually fine once they dried out.

I'll need to get around to scanning a few more choice cuts...Body kitted Mk1 Cav? Flash Harry wheels trims?

Lovely... 8)

My thoughts exactly, and yeah the MKV doesnt look as bad as its close to Ford spec but would look better without any kit.

Blimey, that brings back memories.

I used to work in Halfords in the late 80s as a Saturday job on the Phone-a-Part counter and remember that catalogue very well. The amazing thing was, people used to buy that crap by the bucketload......

I also remember the racks of seats bolted to the frames, only some were Recaros though the rest were Cobras and the suchlike. Back in the days before CCTV was used to cover the store if you got tired of selling Morris Marina fanbelts to the punters you could have a nice sit down on the comfy seats without the Tech Manager seeing you.Marvellous.

I worked there before leaving for NZ and most of my time was spent sitting on the bucket seats, playing with my phone, working on my own car or "borrowing" electrical connectors and consumables from the fitter's toolbox
