Alright gang,

over on R-R theres some lad going on about how many old snotters there are in Spain. he chucked up a link to a Spanish classified ad site, so of course I performed a shite interrogation of said site. Here is what i found:

SEAT 132 MERCEDES

http://www.milanuncios.com/seat-de-segunda-mano/seat-132-12494938.htm

A What? This is a Spanish-built Fiat 132 with a surprise under the bonnet. It comes from the factory with a 2.0 mercedes diesel engine!!! Non-turbo of course.

12494938_5.jpg

What a weapon thats gotta be!!! A great combination of 1970's Fiat 'losing their way' styling, and a hideously low-powered taxi engine. I WANT!!!! Tihs one is only 800€ and is supposedly in great nick.

SEAT 131 DIESEL

Now then, according to Wiki these things left the factory with a PERKINS 4108 (!!!!!) or a SOFIM 2.5 diesel like you get in a Talbot Express i believe. This one in the ad seems to have neither, i'm not sure what engine it is though. Its 999€ but there are a few others:

This ones got the 2.5, its 1000€ but looks a decent bet.

Look at this tricky little blighter!!! €1600 like but looks a minter, 1430 petrol.

I WOULD LOVE either a 132 Mercedes or a Perkins-powered 131, fookin ell when the weather brightens up a bit I might look into one of these a bit more seriously.

I think a Perkins 4.108 powered 131 must classify as WMD in Autoshite circles... in fact, bugger it - one of each please. In saying that, the 2.5 powered 132 with a bit of buggering would make a GR9 machine for Autoshite Caravan holidays I'd imagine.

What's going on with the bumpers on that brown one. They look like towel rails. How many engines actually come with the red one ?

Posted

The red one comes with a spare engine, but the spare engine lokos nowt like the one under the bonnet for some reason.

I have fond memories of these as Taxis when I was growing up in Valencia. Despite whatever diesel donk they shoehorned in, Spanish taxi drivers always managed to get them up to some ludicrous speeds.

I'll have a white late model 131 with a red stripe across the door...

Oh Goody a proper 131/132 thread! 8)

My first car was a two-door 131 Mirafiori 1.3 OHV. Went like stink with the short gearing. Local Escort 1600 Sport guys hated me. I loved that car.

Standard bumpers on that browny. Remember this car was new for 1974. Mine was just like that browny, square lights, same chrome wheel trims, but in blue. RBM 268R.

The big bonnet bump on the red one is the obvious way to tell an oil burner. Thought they were only ever VM units - so news there on Perkins :?

Found a pic of my old Mirafiori, as bought, complete with snow cap on roof falling off just like the trim did. Shame I smashed it up a year later, as that two-door shell is worth a good few Euros today

Excellent thread. anything 131 or 132 'floats my boat' :D

I can vaguely recall the noise of the Talbot Express diesel. There was a baker who loved in the next street from my folks who drove a high roof long wheelbase one. A 131 making the kind of grinding, wailing sound that it did would be quite a sight!

I would roll a 132 with a Mercedes OM615. They must be a fair bit lighter than a Mercedes 200D, making progress brisk*

The figures for a 1975 200D are... 0-100KM/H in 31 seconds and a top whack of 81MPH.

I have an Observer book of automobiles which lists a Fiat 131 Panorama fitted with a 2.5 diesel, the cc relates to the Sofim engine, not the 2.4 VM diesel which was a year or two away I think. Were they sold in the UK?

The Sofim 2445 and 2500s made into things as obscure as the Renault Master, R25 Turbo D, Talbot Express, Citroen C25D, Fiat Ducato, and the Peugeot version of the same, probably also the Alfa version too. I believe also fitted to late model Dodge badged Renault Commercials, like a 3.5 ton Recovery truck I used to tool about in about 10 years ago. That was on a M plate.... (I think) Also saw light of day in Iveco as a 2800cc 4 pot IIRC... It's a great engine when running right, but a boat anchor when fooked. The oil pump is a full on separate thing bolted to the outside, and cambelt driven. They need serious priming before running the engine. There's a hole you shouldn't block as you are doing it, as it takes about 12 hours and a new headlining to sort out if you do it in a Master... (Minibus too)

I seem to think they might have made it into the R20 or R30.... Justified thought or bullshit? Discuss.

I think Renault 20/30s used Renault's own 2.1 diesel.

I owned a T.reg 132 in around '86.It had chrome bumpers but not those extra tubes (which is why I asked) so must have been a face-lift version.

Posted

Seat 131 Panorama with a big lazy diesel must be ace. I would genuinely love one. GR8 4 long distance motorway economiz.

I reckon in a warm, dry climate that'd probably last forever as well.

Posted

I don't think the extra tubes on the bumpers were standard, more an aftermarket accessory, I remember my Spanish uncles Renault 12 TS Break had them. And also his Daughters Renault 18

You did see them on a lot of cars, and only really in spain, think they were to protect the lights due to the abundance of touch parking.

The 132 famously had sun visors which retracted out of the headlining. Makes them 'kin A in my book.

Posted

Right. So lets get this straight. Its a Fiat 132 with one of those old Merc lumps in it...

I'm off for a lie down.

Posted

An early pushrod 131 with small rear lights would make me moist. A green one with orange fabric trim. :P

Posted

Ah, I had a yellow early 131 single cam.... SND 215R.

Followed it up with an A reg 2.0 Supermirafiori. In '91 that only cost me about £300. Went well though. Later on I had a Supermirafiori Sport, which rusted as well as it accelerated. The Sport had the orange crushed velvet interior 8)

None of 'em made it past the early '90s.

Yup! Made out of a transluscent plastic they called 'macralon'...they came out the side aswell to cover the driver and passenger windows.

Don't forget the Argenta, which is the shitest Fiat this side of a 130 saloon in my opinion:

It would appear the Sofim engine also made it into Lancias and the Renault Safrane.... kinell...

I wonder how the handling would be affected with a cast iron Mercedes diesel in the front? I'm guessing the rear axle ratio is different to the petrol cars too - 8000rpm at 60mph in top gear is where you want to be in a 131, probably not suitable for the iron donkey.

As someone else said, you've really got to drive it like a native taxi driver to get the best from it. I'd have one

I can imagine a 131 with a turbocharged SOFIM from an Iveco 35-12 would be a bit of a weapon. A nose-heavy weapon, but a weapon nonetheless.

Oh, now, that's just naughty. Will someone please do that? And run it on chip fat 'n' lard.

Yay. Just Yay. :D

Could this be joining the grey-grille Sierra and the Tagora in the Holy Grail Grotto?

Posted

Fond memories of a lovely 131 2 litre twink. Far nicer to drive than anything equivalent of the time.

Diesel 131s and 132. All I can say is WOW 8)

.

Well what you really really want then is Lancia Beta Diesel
